Cool Hand Luke, T.J Watt, And The Draft

T.J. Watt could end up a nice pick in a trade back or the second round, but will his history of injuries continue
6600Watt could end up a nice pick… if Miami trades back, or in the 2nd round, but his injury history could make him a bust.

Some Players are Born to be Injured

The 2017 NFL Draft is being touted as having a lot of depth… maybe more so than in a long while.

Plenty of that depth offers options at Linebacker for the Miami Dolphins News late in the 1st round, and even beyond. But many of these options remind me of one of my favorite movies–an oldie but a goody–Cool Hand Luke.

For those who haven’t seen the movie, the plot is about the prison system trying to get a prisoner, named Luke, “right”. But something hardwired in Luke just won’t let that happen.

In a rough parallel, the same thing may just happen with many of these talented, later-round options in this draft. A history of injuries could very well continue into the NFL, and they may never get right, despite all the efforts of the Dolphins system.

But, regardless of this reality, Miami may be lured by good value and belief that they can fix the problems of consistency. So fans should get prepared.

Watt is a Player with a High-risk Reward Ratio

A load of these talented, but injury-prone kids wants to be good football players, and they will do all it takes to be men of honor, and give their all to their team. But that want won’t enough because something hardwired into them will cause their bodies will fail them.

The Dolphins have shown they are a team to take chances on players with an injury history, and in some cases, they have won, and in others, they have lost. Arian Foster and Kiko Alonso are examples of both ends of the spectrum.

T.J. Watt has met with the Fins for a private interview. Watt made 63 tackles with 15.5 tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks, 4 passes batted, and 2 forced fumbles. Whenever you watch tape on him you can see that he has a nose for the football. If he could only escape his history of injuries, he would be an excellent pick. Since most NFL football fans and best pay per head reviews are betting that Miami is going to use early picks on defense, Watt may very well end up a Dolphin in the 1st or 2nd round. While Watt, or a player with the same knock, could end up a good pick, he may just as easily end up a bust.

But even if Watt isn’t picked, expect the Fins to take one of these “roll of the dice” players in the draft. The hope is they don’t take them with too high a pick and that the player does get it right.

All this is being said so as a fan you can put your jock on and brace for the blow as Miami goes for Yahtzee. Heck, maybe the Miami brain trust is smarter than we think. Maybe they end up rolling a winner? Stranger things have happened. Either way, only time will tell if, and in what round they take the risk… and if that player ever gets right. Fingers crossed. Go Fins!!!
