What’s Going To Happen When Koa Misi Is Ready?
When not injured, Misi is excellent against the run
Linebacker Koa Misi has been with the Miami Dolphins for the past 7 seasons and has always been referred by each coaching regime as a reliable player that rarely makes mistakes. However, Misi has had trouble staying healthy, only completing one full season his Rookie year… and is actually still recovering from a season ending neck injury from last year.
Misi took a pay cut this offseason to stay with the team and was scheduled to be medically cleared in May. However, he didn’t participate in OTAs or minicamp. Considering that Misi is a veteran player, this may also be Coach Gase just being extra cautious and not wanting to risk Misi suffering any type of setbacks… we can hope.
It will be very interesting to see if Misi gets back on the field for mini-camp in July.
The Dolphins already have Kiko Alonso and Lawrence Timmons penciled in as 2 of the 3 starting linebackers, which leaves one starter left to be confirmed.
Multiple bookmaker software programs like www.AcePerHead.com, are claiming that 2nd round draft pick Raekwon McMillan is the odds on favorite to win the last starting linebacker position.
Misi is a tough veteran presence at OLB
But to complicate the prediction, McMillian had a rocky time in OTAs and the 3 day mini-camp. This could easily just be chalked up to being a Rookie and having to learn a brand new NFL playbook… again, we can hope. But to be fair, the pads have yet to come on, so it’s not entirely fair to judge a Rookie linebacker until we at least see him in pads. Yet it’s still a bit concerning that most sources were all agreeing that 3rd year player Mike Hull was getting more first team snaps and looking more comfortable at the outside linebacker position then McMillian.
With all that being said, it looks like that third linebacker spot is definitely up for grabs, and considering that the coaching staff and team thinks very highly of Misi, it could really be his job to lose.
The key for Misi–as always–is going to be his health. This year it is even more precarious because he’s when dealing with a neck injury, being 100% healed before letting him back on the field is essential.
If Misi does get the green light to play, then it appears he’s going to be the front runner to win the last starting linebacker job.
Koa hasn’t been healthy since he was a rookie
Misi has never been a stud linebacker for us, however he has also never been the weak link in this unit. He’s a player that has a high football IQ, gives his best effort, and does want the coaches ask from him. This is a main reason why each coaching regime has liked him and kept him in the starting lineup. If he can actually get healthy–stay away from tackling head first please, for your own sake–then he may just be the perfect guy to put with Alonso and Timmons.
Alonso and Timmons are both considered more talented players and have the ability to make more impactful plays than Misi. But his steady play is an excellent complement to their more aggressive risk-taking style of play.
I’d prefer if Rookie McMillian won the starting spot–obviously–considering we used a second round draft pick on him. But Koa wouldn’t be a booby prize, either. Go Fins!!!

Most coaches at some point in their careers will experience a team that is lacking in talent. I’m sure injuries will have its affects on all teams. “But” They are NFL Professionals.
Two many coaches focus to much on the Quarterback not the team concept.
Practice fundamental development focusing on Tackling, Blocking, ball toughness and Attention to details.
In order to keep up with the game, the Dolphins need to minimize the number of possessions that the other teams would have and play really good defense. Like in order to beat your enemy you must really know him.
Incorporated more multidimensional drills that incorporated combination skills.
Every season the Dolphins starters are beaten up and on the bench In both our offense and defense, We should play more people in order to play that aggressive style for a full game and season. IF We start with a 53 man roster no one must ride the bench. There are some thing Matt Moore can do better and their are some things that Tannehill can do better than Matt Moore likewise with the 53 man roster.
When gambling a person do well to bet on the numbers that are hitting and not the numbers that they want to hit! Meaning play the players with the hot hand those game.
I’m about balanced in passing and rushing this will allow our defense to keep the other team on the bench. This three and out, throwing interceptions every game is asking to much from our defense. Any time we are in the Red Zone we need to score. Our defense cannot play on their heels like last season but must attacked.
I would make the Dolphins team study every touch down and two point conversion play that the Patriots have ran the last 5 years.
Pouncey and Misi won’t make thru a full season. Have capable players at OLB in Hewitt and Hull, but the O-Line is a bit of a question mark. I know Gase and staff are really stressing position flexibility. If Pouncey goes down, who steps in? Some are saying Anthony Steen? Steen is a real bulldog. The guy is massive. But he struggles in getting to the 2nd level. However, he was a rookie last year, and learning an NFL offense and signals is tough. Year 2 in the same system (s) should benefit everyone.
Coaching is the key to our offensive line: I don’t know enough about coaching to say: But I do know that basic fundamentals wins games.
Coaching is the key to beating the Patriots and any other team. Bill Belichick figured out why the New England Patriots lost the AFC Championship Game to Denver 2016: The offensive line was simply dominated by the Denver Broncos’ pass rush for 60 minutes. Tom Brady, who fires off passes faster than any quarterback in the league, just did not have enough time.
What was the fixed:
The line was a liability, but the front office did not go out and spend a ton of resources bringing in better players in that offseason. Instead, Belichick turned to a familiar face: 68-year-old Dante Scarnecchia, who retired as New England’s offensive line coach in 2014. Patriots’ MVP is a 68-year-old coach whom Bill Belichick coaxed out of retirement.
I didn’t know that… great story. I agree coaching is a key ingredient, but for this team, I’d say health is even more crucial due to Pouncey’s perpetual injury issues. This line will be good IF James, Tunsil, and Pouncey are there all or most of the season. They can get by with the G’s they have if the health is there. We have a good OL coach in Chris Foerster. He did wonders last year given all the injuries and a rookie starter and a starter who had never played the position before in Bushrod, and even Urbik who was a G with some time a C. I think we have good, don’t know if it’s great, but at least good coaching. Tunsil needs to get his chops back a T and the line needs sorting a bit, but health is paramount… but coaching will follow right behind it. I do think there is enough talent. Would I like more… YUP. But for where they are at, there is enough to be successful.
Steve, coaching is crucial I agree, but injuries and team health is just as important if not more. Gase is stressing big time position flexibility. Year 2 in the same systems should help a lot too!
…its not just Misi …there were way too many veterans that were limited during OTAs …if Misi can’t play, we do have apparently viable backups …but the OL is injury riddled and the backups are weak to non-existent at best …then there is Parker who has yet to make it through camp uninjured …and TH is wearing a knee brace for a reason …etc etc etc
…its a new season and the meds and conditioning are definitely better …and Gase appears to be playing it safe so far with Pouncy and Misi …but its a brutal game and a long season …its a certainty that injuries will happen …what is not certain is who will step up this year
Yeah Lemmus. Injuries always play a part each season, but it season Miami always has big injuries. hopefully Gase has a special staff that can train up and med up healthy players. Games is truly brutal… each and every one of these guys are a special breed when it comes to tough…
Well said about it about injuires will happen but the big question is who will step up? Somebody is going to have to step up on the O-line and if not its going to be a long year for the offense
Jimmy Johnson way
…Misi is a side show imnsho
…the bottom line will be the OL again …we have a premier RB that needs to get into the opposing backfield to do his damage and a potential franchise QB that needs his knees protected, not to mention time to find a receiver …those two items are the job of the OL …and so far, we don’t have one …and it isn’t looking like that 5th round sensation is going to be an answer either
…could all change when the pads come on and the physical side takes over …but right now, it is what it is
…Pouncy is about as reliable as Misi …and while we have viable options at LB, there is no viable option at Center that can spring Ajayi …in the mean-time Touchy Toes Tunsil is moving to LT and Just Taking My Time James is at RT again …they could be good there of course, the emphasis being on the “could” …not holding my breath …and we have no quality bu at either unless you think Young is starting material …but then why isn’t he, eh
…and then there is Guard …or rather we are hoping and praying that someone, somewhere, somehow can find two viable starting quality guards out of the rookies and other assorted castoffs on the current roster …again, not holding my breath
…I’m still ticked that we took Caroo last year and then did the same kind of thing in the 3rd this year …gambling on the come again rather than spending that value on the OL …but then what do I know …I’m a born masochist and love watching Ajayi run for negative yards and TH warming the bench
…but maybe Gase really does have an ace up his sleeve …I’m thinking he intended to start T-bum at LG all along …a real “Jimmy Johnson” move, eh
He’ll get injured. What else do you expect from him???
hahhah…. yeah, likely. But maybe we can sacrifice him to the football gods for Pouncey to make it.
