Someone to Guard Ryan Tannehill
In terms of Draft value for Offensive linemen, the highest value is always on left tackles, because they are the ones protecting the blind side of a team’s franchise QB. After that would probably be the right tackle since he is going against outside speed pass rushers on the all important passing downs. Center is next on the list because he has to be in constant communication with the QB, and is the field general for the offensive line. Lastly would be the guard positions, and they become valuable in the running game, especially guards that can pull well and pan-cake unsuspecting defensive lineman. Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans would say that teams rarely should use their first round pick on a guard, and I would agree, because there is a very high probability that there is another players more highly rated at more valuable positions, such as corner-back, safety and wide-receiver. I highly doubt the the Miami Dolphins will draft a guard in the first round, but there are two guards that worthy of Miami’s 2nd or 3rd round pick; Xavier Su’a Filo, and David Yankey.
Su’a Filo is 6’4”, weighs 307, ran a 5.04 40 time and played guard for the UCLA Bruins. He played well against some very top competition in the PAC-12, and he is a complete blocker, both in the run game and pass protection. He even had to fill in at some left tackle over the years for the Bruins, which shows his versatility. He had a very impressive combine, with one of the top 40 times for a guard, and moving fluidly in all his field drills. One other bit of information is that Su’a Filo was a team captain, and is highly re-Guarded for being a high-character individual. He is projected to be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round.
David Yankey is 6’5”, weighs 311, ran a 5.48 40 time, and also played guard in the PAC-12 for the Stanford Cardinals. He is known as a technician, which puts him ahead of the game for a rookie offensive lineman, because analysts are constantly say that incoming rookies need to improve their technique and their foot work. He didn’t look that great in the combine, but he was a monster throughout the season, especially against Oregon, were he was blasting holes big enough for a subway train to get through. He also spent some time at the left tackle position in his junior year, where he was named a First-Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association, and The Sporting News. He is another well balanced guard that has been consistent in both the run game, and pass protection. He is also projected to be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round.
I think both players have many similarities, and would be happy to draft either one. I would be even more happy if the Phins were able to draft one of these guys in the 3rd round, which would be a solid steal to get a top-ranked guard who can potentially start all 16 games as a rookie.
