Sunday Morning Quarter Back
The Miami Dolphins won for the first time this preseason against the Tampa Bucs, and as the preseason continues to progress, Phins fans are beginning to get a better sense of what type of team they have this season. The talent on this team is clearly better than it has been in recent years, and a playoff appearance is clearly a distinct possibility, however, there is still much that needs to be improved and fine-tuned.
For starters, Tannehill once again looked very sharp in his first three drives of the game. On his second drive, he was able to drive the Dolphins offense 62 yards down the field, converting two 3rd and sevens and capping the drive off with a field goal. Unfortunately, his third and final drive ended with Gerald McCoy toasting Dallas Thomas and stripping Tannehill, causing a fumble turnover. Obviously the turnover was not good and resulted in a touchdown for the Bucs, but there were lots of encouraging things seen from Tannehill and the offense. In his three drives, he did not have one three and out, his release was quick, and even his incompletions were right on the money, but dropped. One of the things that I noticed was when he releases the ball quickly he has a tendency to throw it a bit side-armed. This is not a great technique, however, his accuracy seemed not to suffer, so as long as he doesn’t get sacked and completes the pass, who cares if he is not using a textbook technique. The other obvious improvement is the talent in the wide receiver corps. Gone are the days in Miami when we didn’t have any receiver who could catch the ball. Now thanks to Philbin, and the recruiting department we are loaded with receivers who can not only catch the ball but make plays after the catch.

It is obvious that the running game is still an afterthought for the coaching staff, and it does not help that the running backs and offensive line are not giving any inkling that it will improve. In the first half, the team rushed for -5 yards on 9 plays. The league is fully transformed into a pass-happy league, and the Dolphins appear finally equipped to compete in that area of the game, however, they need to get some sort of production from the running game. It doesn’t need to be terrific and dominate games, but it needs to at least keep opposing defenses honest. Hopefully when Knowshon Moreno finally gets back to full speed, then he will add a spark to the lifeless running game. If not then the team is going to need a lot of 300+ passing yards and 2 touchdown+ games from Tannehill, if they want to compete for a playoff spot.
The tackling was a little bit better, however, there were still issues, especially when Jimmy Wilson completely whiffed on Mike Evans, who would have scored a touchdown if he wasn’t stripped at the goal line by Brent Grimes. The other concern is that Dallas Thomas played terrible at right guard, and at the moment, there does not appear to be anyone on the team that is that much better.
One last observation was that we have a full-fledged kicking competition. Sturgis has had on and off groin problems, and new kicker John Porter nailed both his long field goal attempts of 48 and 51 yards in the game. Sturgis better step it up, cause it was not like he was a clutch kicker last season, and roster spots are too valuable to have two field goal kickers on the team.

Spoken like someone that has never played the position: “One of things that I noticed was when he releases the ball quickly he has a tendency to throw it a bit side-armed.” It was not “a bit sidearmed” its a 3/4 throw which is more of a natural throw than overhead. That throw is done to protect the arm, the body does it naturally. Some of the most famous and successful QB’s have been “side-arm” throwers including Johnny Unitas (extreme). The 3/4 pass is the “text book” Bullet Pass used for quick strikes which is when you see the “bit sidearm” of Tannehill. This is taught by every QB coach that is worth anything.
Credit where credit’s due. Rishard Matthews, Brian Hartline and Charles Clay were late round draft picks that Ireland hit on while Wallace and Gibson were his big FA acquisitions. He had his major flaws but that old GM we all hated is the reason we’re stacked at WR, he deserved at a mention.
Yeah he did bring those players into the team, so he did doing something right.
That side-armed delivery worked pretty well for Marino.
Yeah im not knocking it, just noticing that he has been using it. As long as he gets the ball to the receiver I don’t care if he under hands it
