Ross: Build From Scratch, Don’t Try To Remodel A Pile Of…

Steven Ross needs to scrap everything from top to bottom

Steven Ross made the mistake of trying to retool instead of rebuild when he hired Gase

Steven Ross made the mistake of trying to retool instead of rebuilding when he hired Gase

The Dolphins 2018 Season has effectively ended with the heartbreaking loss to the Colts. And when Playoffs hopes are officially laid to rest in a few weeks, the whole Adam Gase and Mike Tannenbaum regime must cease as well.

From soup to nuts, Steven Ross needs to clean house, hire a GM who knows football and then stay away from all football-related decisions. I repeat, STAY AWAY.

This is key: Ross needs to hire someone who knows football and then be a silent partner… I mean not even a peep.

Starting from scratch isn’t an easy course. We can get a lot worse than Gase and Co. Think of gutless Nick Saban, the mealworm personality of Joe Philbin, or the incompetence of Cam Cameron.

All three were far more distasteful than the current regime. But all these regimes are equal in one regard: Not good enough.

Some will say Gase sucks. I disagree. I think much like the franchise’s record over the last decade and a half, Gase is mediocre. ‘Meh’ wasn’t enough to prop up this wreck of a franchise.

Gase had the franchise close to turning the corner, but several key decisions and events sank the ship. Now the window of opportunity is gone. A great coach and GM might have been able to salvage the ship. But between the injuries, poor circumstance, and character implosions from players and coaches, even that might not have been good enough.

When Gase took over the roster it was a mess and Tannenbaum and Grier haven’t helped to the level needed.

Tannenbaum and Grier hindered Gase with these (among many more):
  1. Signing Suh, and extending Tannehill and Jones.
  2. Free Agency signings of Timmons, Williams, Larsen, Foster.
  3. Drafting of McMillan, Tankersly, Carroo, and Harris

I’m sure in most of these Gase had his hand involved. And Gase was primarily responsible for Thomas, Bushrod, Fales, and Brock.

Gase fully owns the Ryan Tannehill evaluation. Tannehill was marked by Gase as the key piece to the retool. Gase managed to make the Playoffs in his rookie season but in the process lost Tannehill. Still, Gase believed Tannehill was the answer. This was one of his biggest miscues.

Tannehill didn’t return as good as he appeared to be when he went down in 2016. Time away and multiple injuries seem to have taken something off his game. He now looks skittish under pressure.

Even Tannehill’s greatest believers have to admit this.

Maybe on an elite team, Tannehill might be ‘good enough’… but not with this depleted roster. One thing is for certain: He will never be elite. I believe if Tannehill had Gase from the start and hadn’t been a punching bag for the first 5 years of his career, he would have had a higher ceiling… maybe he’d be an above average QB. It’s possible… of course, ‘average’ could be all he ever was going to be as a QB.

You can bet with the pay per heads like www.AcePerHead.com that he’ll get a shot on another franchise to prove his doubters wrong.

Right now though, Tannehill isn’t the answer for this team and regime. While his stats looked good against the Colts, there were three near picks and no signature clutch plays. It’s time for Tannehill to go… along with the rest.

‘Meh’ QB, ‘meh’ roster and ‘meh’ staff equal a ‘meh’ season.

Gase has made crucial errors in decisions, evaluation, and philosophy. His career in Miami parallels the Colts game. Gase turned an expected disaster into a near win. Unfortunately, poor decisions and players performance in crucial moments proved to be Gase and the Dolphins undoing.

Close is no cigar and never will be.

Maybe if Gase had been given a chance to fail big in 2016 with a rebuild he would have had a better growth curve as an HC.

The Playoff run was followed up by Tannehill’s injury in 2017. The pressure to win overcame Gase and he used up all his ‘goodwill and mojo’ with a bet on Cutler. By anointing Cutler the starter without a rep, Gase also compromised his team philosophy of veterans have the right to fight for their spot. This might have been the biggest negative. Gase lost on every front when Culter flopped. Instead, he should have let 2017 ride on Moore and Fales and made moves that would have helped his future. Fans and public opinion would have understood a down season.

Shoulda’, coulda’, woulda’… but didn’t.

Gase needs to look in the mirror plenty if he wants to be a successful Head Coach someday.

Now, with no QB and a team going nowhere, it’s time to move on from Gase.

But there was one mistake that trumps all other mistakes and this mistake runs to the core of the franchise:

Here’s a post from a Phinsnews reader, Steve:

“Mediocrity begins:
Jim Bates 2004-2005 3Wins -4 Loses

Nick Saban 2005-2006 2005-2006 15 Wins and 17 L

Cam Cameron 2007 2007 1 Wins 15 loss

Tony Sparano 2008-2011 29 wins and 32 losses Noted: Turned the Dolphins around quickly

Todd Bowles 2011 2wins 1 loss

Joe Philbin 2012-1015 24 wins and 28 losses

Dan Campbell 2015 5 wins and 7 losses

Adam Gase 2016-21 wins and 22 loses”

All mediocre seasons with two disasters sandwiched in between.

Here’s a look at the records, year by year.

After our two biggest losing seasons, ownership brought in a regime that wanted to retool and win immediately. Saban and Parcells wanted the ‘quick turnaround’. It didn’t work. They could have gutted the team to the foundation and built slowly. Instead, they painted and plastered over issues in patchwork repair.

Both Saban and Parcells missed their shot to get the right QB, the team collapsed, and the architects ran for the hills. Then the proceeding regimes used the same blueprints with the same results.

Here’s a good bit of wisdom that as a builder you should know, Mr. Ross: It’s better to build from scratch and to remodel a pile of crap.

You aren’t a bad guy, Mr. Ross, but please, learn this sage advice or sell the team.

We need to come up with 3 3rd round picks for 2019

Suggestion: Trade Devante Parker and draft

This team has too many flaws in the Players,Coaching,Management etc. not all is bad though. A bad moved is too spend a lot of draft picks etc on a Quarterback in the 1st round and then finding out he is not the guy.

Secondly Why so much talk about Carr from the Raiders? if he was so good why are the raiders sucking?
Despite a 2017 contract that made Carr the highest paid player in NFL history (until he was leapfrogged by Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, and Aaron Rodgers), the team structured the deal to make it, after 2018, a year-to-year proposition.

After year two (i.e., after this year), the Raiders could end the deal by cutting Carr before the third day of the 2019 waiver period, absorbing a cap charge of merely $7.5 million to wipe Carr off the books. After the third day of the 2019 waiver period, Carr’s $19.9 million salary for 2019 becomes fully guaranteed.

This is my fear with the Dolphins trading up in the draft for Drew Lock, Justin Hurbert or Will Grier.

    Dol-Fans you be the judge!

Really these are Better Quarterbacks who the Dolphins can draft in the 3rd round. I would be “SO BOLD TO STATE” that the Miami Dolphins need to acquire three -third round picks.

To select their 2 Quarterbacks and draft a Running back preferably Johnathan Taylor Wisconsin Badger

    The quarterback Package season 2019:

If Mack Wilson Linebacker is available in the second, we must draft him very unlikely he would fall to the 2nd round. Another Defensive Captain

I need to watch them… it would be a bad if they swing and miss. Even if they swing an hit it would be bad because this team isn’t ready. The Eagles had some good drafts and player to handle moving up. We don’t. This team is a miss mosh of old and young with gaps on the squad… only way to go is start with youth and draft till you find one with a limited expenditure of picks…

    Hello Dol-Fans

We may fine it difficult for the Miami Dolphins not to focus on a quarterback in the 1st round. I’m convinced that we must go defense the 1st two rounds. Our focus must be on picking up Q. Williams he is the best player out of the defensive tackles/nose guard maybe in the draft. I believed that he also is only 19 years old?

Thing is Vincent Taylor and Godchaux are good. They could find another in the mid rounds. If they go D in the 1st it should be MLB. I doubt they do that because they’d have to admit they screwed up with McMillan. Now, DE could be an option if they move on from both Wake and Quinn. I wouldn’t mind a stud DT though… but the DL has been good despite what some say… the LB’s are THE biggest issue, in my opinion.

      • Steve

        Understand Admin!

But I will have to disagree Quinnen Williams is the real deal and most likely the best in the 2019 draft.
If we missed on Williams we must go after the next Defensive Tackle.
Top expert say LSU D. White linebacker is the top. I think BAMA Mike Wilson is the Best Fit for Dolphins in the second round and the Best linebacker.

Jimmy! Williams constantly get double team and still stop the run or passer with ease.

    Nice read Admin!

Thanks for the Posting comment. Regardless I want to see the Dolphins win, We all do. Other than the Mediocrity with our team. What’s really troubling is:

I would like to see the Dolphins start getting 1st and 2nd or 3rd round picks for our key players etc. Rarely happens.
I would like to see the Dolphins earned more prime time games.

  • Van

We will never know what Matt Moore could have done if he had been given the support Tannehill has received. What we do know is that Ross, Tannenbaum, Gase and Tannehill are not a winning combination. The Dolphins will be stuck with bad contracts, bad players and mediocrity for several years to come, no matter who the coach is. We are in a hole! Let’s flush the toilet and try again.

Just boycott the underachieving Dolphins and stuff will change. Don’t buy their crap! Don’t go to the stadium. Things will change.

    • admin

I think if Gase stuck with Moore and Fales and went 4-12 it would have been understood. Anything beyond that would have been a moral victory. The team would have understood and the process of earning your spot would have stood. As it is, if Gase likes you then you play even if you suck. But for some, they get canned at the drop of a hat. He is uneven. Now JJ was too with the Cowboys, but stars were treated differently… but he won. Gase on the otherhand screws up, ha issues with players and loses, so he has no grace or cred to use. This lack of credibility started with Cutler. Both fans and the team gave him a sideways look and said, ‘okay’ if you say so. He was wrong with Cutler and on several players… and then his problems began to become a landslide.

        Hello Admin

Reset: I’m serious we need to go at Irving Meyers! Who has a better resume out there?

The sure way to head further into the Abyss! Is to overspend in free agency on over price veteran quarterbacks etc. Then overreaching for A single quarterback in the 1st round of 2019 draft etc..

Three Quarterback package: Forget about the Veteran and run these three for the 2019 season. But make your offense conducive to their style and not the coaches.
We have fixed the quarterback problem with Luke Falk We already have on the roster (Gase knows this)
Kyler Murray 3rd rounder in the draft
Garner Minshew maybe a 3rd to 5th rounder
Can the Dolphins handle Gaskins Ohio State Quarterback if he comes out?

        Oklahoma Sooners Quarterback: Kyler Murray

Garner Minshew Washington State it was stated Quarterback played better than Luke Falk
conference and Win/:loss games 3or to 5th rounder in the draft
        Washington————7-2 ————9-3
        Washington State——7-2————-10-2
        Stanford————–7-2————–7-4
        Oregon—————-5-4—————8-4
        California————4-4—————7-4

Drew Lock 8-4 played in a tougher conference
Herbert sustained a right (throwing) shoulder injury during the Ducks win over Oregon State. The nature of the injury and his inconsistent performance could affect his stock as arguably the top quarterback.

        • Steve

          On the up and up!

Kyler Murray is the quarterback in the Big 12 conference who is currently on top.

Oklahoma Sooners 11-1 Klyer Murray QB
          Texas Longhorns 9-3
          Iowa State Cyclones 7-4
West Virginia Mountaineers 8-3 Will Grier QB
          TCU Horned Frogs 6-6
          Baylor Bears 6-6
          Kansas State Wildcats 5-7
          Texas Tech Red Raiders 5-7
          Oklahoma State Cowboys 6-6
          Kansas Jayhawks 3-9

  • I think Gase is more than capable of leading this team. The thing that has sank the Dolphins the last two seasons and even 2016 when they made the playoff is injuries. We need to somehow figure out how to keep the team relatively healthy. If not for the incredible rash of injuries this year, we may still be giving Bill Belichump and Jan (Tom) Brady a run for the division title. I honestly believe that if this current team can stay healthy, they could be a team that can make the playoffs consistently!

Injuries are a legit excuse, Andy. But along the way, Gase has stacked up his failings and hasn’t grown in key areas. He has tightened the ship with penalties and in the discipline. But he has proven to not be able to judge QB talent and other talents, make poor calls in clutch situations, have issues with many players, and seems to lack a true overseer nature as an HC. Not to mention all the players quitting on him. He didn’t know he had a coke head coach, malaluga was showing up drunk at practice… these are just some of the head scratchers under his watch. I think HC and play calling is too much for him. I like him and think more talent and less injuries would def. give him more wins… but is he good enough to win it all? From what I’ve seen, no. His team is perpetually a mess for some reason or another. But the only consistency is they are inconsistent. Discipline is thhe key to success in the NFL… and in that he isn’t good enough in my opinion. I hope he proves me wrong, Andy. If this team fights till the end of the season that will say something. If they quit it will say something too…
