Tannenbaum Malignancy Still Lingers On Phins
Phins are weighed down by Mike Tannenbaum even though he’s gone
You hear it all around: The Phins are trying to move Ryan Tannehill.
Focus on the word trying.
Now, they’d never be able to get near the 1st Round Pick they invested, but something—anything—is better than nothing. Sadly, nothing is what they’ll receive for Ryan Tannehill—except dead CAP space… unless a miracle happens.
Yes, anything is possible.
Mike Tannenbaum was given control of the Miami Dolphins a few years ago, so incompetency does exist even at the highest level of the NFL. Unfortunately, Miami has almost cornered the market on incompetence over the last 20 years.
Maybe Miami has turned the corner and someone else will wear the dunce cap for a change?
Maybe some idiot out there will pull the trigger on a trade for Tannehill?
We’ll see.
The restructure of Tannehill’s contract wasn’t a winning move
This isn’t to say Tannehill doesn’t have the talent to warrant a trade. He does. The problem is Tannehill’s contract… mainly the restructure he received from Tannenbaum last year. The current numbers have Tannehill ranked the 9th highest paid quarterback in the league. OUCH!
Tannehill’s original contract:
The original contract would have allowed Miami the ability to cut him with little consequence. It would have also given Miami some leverage in pressuring Tannehill to restructure his contract to make a trade more palatable.
Grier, “Ohh, you don’t want to be flexible then we’ll cut with only $4 million guaranteed. Maybe a restructuring with this large salary as the starting point will give you more than on the open market… and the opportunity to start?”
The new contract has Tannehill making $13 million free from Miami over the next two years. There’s zero incentive for him to help the Phins… His bills are covered. The pay per head services (www.AcePerHead.com) are betting a trade is all but dead because of this.
The sickness of Tannenbaum is almost gone…
Tanenbaum wanted to play now and pay later, so Tannehill’s base salary was $790,000 in 2018, pushing $16.7 million into a signing bonus, spread out over the final three years of his contract. Thankfully, if Miami cuts him pre June 1st, they’ll be free and clear in 2021.
Tannenbaum’s mode of operation since he arrived…
… “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today!”
But this is where the good news starts:
In the 2021 Season, the last bit of Mike Tannenbaum’s malignant contracts will be removed… all but Reshad Jones that is.
Tannenbaum moves that will be off the books by 2021
- Andre Branch: No financial commitment by 2020.
- Ryan Tannehill: No financial commitment by 2021.
- Kiko Alonso: No financial commitment by 2021.
- Danny Amendola: No financial commitment this year.
- Ndamukong Suh: No financial commitment by 2020.
- Josh Sitton: No financial commitment this year.
- Robert Quinn: No financial commitment this year.
- Daniel Kilgore: No financial commitment this year.
- Ted Larsen: No financial commitment in 2020.
Only Reshad Jones and Bobby McCain will have strings attached to Miami in 2021. McCain is a keeper as a Nickle Corner. Jones though needs to go. He’s a talented player… and was one of my favorites. But when Jones quit on the team, I quit on him. Also, his freelance style might not go over with Flores—but you never know.
The ‘good news’ continues: Bearing the burden of Tannenbaum this year and next is the perfect lesson if Grier hasn’t learned CAP responsibility… and concrete reinforcement if he has.
Phins Fans also need to learn this lesson or have the fortitude to hold the course. There will be roster moves that hurt, a tough season or two, and a lack of expensive Free Agents. But just as this regime needs to be patient and not make desperate moves… we fans need to be patient as well.
A fair evaluation for them, yet patient.
Now, I know we all understand this… Still, the cutting room floor will be bloody and the real slashing is about to begin. The gore will make many get weak in the knees. So get ready, gird up your loins… and remember, the scalpel must go to the bone to remove the tumor of Tannenbaum–and all that’s been wrong with the Dolphins these last two decades. Go Phins!!!

Good article! Just the facts! Tannehill must go and everyone knows it so trades are not going to develop. Anyone needing a good back up will wait until he is cut. Jones is another story. There was probably lots of friction between Gase and Jones! I would talk to Jones and see what he wants to do. tell him that he will not be the starter at his old position and see what his attitude is. He could compete with McDonald or ask to be traded. Either way, we have reclaimed a good football player. A trade would be nice if he is willing and able to use his agent to put out feelers. We will get a higher pick if other teams know he is a happy camper.
Thanks, sir! I get Jones might have been pissed at Gase or whoever… I’m sure, Wake was too when he saw little action last season early… But Wake is a real team star and Jones isn’t… How do you know when the next quit is coming? Ship him out… whatever the cost. Accept a quitter and others will quit too. I do agree with you… maybe he is earnestly contrite and we keep him. But, how do you know? I hope they trade him eat some of the dough and buy an extra pick… I’d rather see Minka as the high S and McDonald as the in the box S. Jones is great… I don’t know what drove him to self bench… but that’s almost as low as you can go on the football field. A shame he was one of my favs…
