A Safe Pick
Even though the NFL draft is still roughly 2 and a half months away, there is going to be increased speculation and excitement over what the Miami Dolphins are going to do with their first-round pick. I may sound like a broken record, but I can not stress enough that the Phins need a high caliber day 1 starter. They can not afford to draft a player like Dion Jordan, that can’t get on the field.
The best pay per head reviews in the world are saying that one of the Dolphins’ biggest needs is a true middle linebacker. The free-agency market has some decent middle linebackers that will hit the market like David Harris, and Brandon Spikes, but both are mainly two-down linebackers, whereas the Dolphins should be looking for a three-down linebacker. One player in the upcoming draft that could fit the bill for the Phins is Eric Kendricks from UCLA.
Kendricks is everything you would want in a true middle linebacker, a sideline-to-sideline player that has a nose for the football, can make impact plays, and is very good in pass coverage. In 2014 he won the Butkus Award for best linebacker in college, and rarely do you see a middle linebacker with his skills become a bust. In 2014 he had a whopping 149 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, 2 passes broken up, 3 interceptions, and a forced fumble. He is the type of player that a team can build their defense around.
There is a lot of talent in this upcoming draft, so in terms of talent he may not be the 14th best player in the draft, so if Miami does draft him, some critics may consider this a reach with that draft spot. However, this guy is exactly the type of player that Miami is looking for at the middle line-backing position. Kendricks can step in day 1 and become a fixture in Miami’s defense for the next 10+ years. He is also a safe pick and fills a huge need on the team, and should definitely be on the board when Miami comes on the clock at the number 14th spot. He actually makes too much sense for Miami not to pick him. If Miami wants to get cute, they could trade down and most likely still be able to draft Kendricks in the 20’s. I know we have other needs, and other sexy needs like a wide receiver but a player of Kendricks’ caliber at a position that we desperately need to fill might be way too tempting to pass up. What do the rest of Miami Dolphins fans think about drafting Kendricks in the first round?

I’d have no problem if the Phins took Kendricks with the first pick. But they’d better fix the DT position too or he’s just gonna be fending off blockers all year long. If a top 3 WR is picked then that’s a sign Wallace is history.
Against today’s NFL offenses you dont need a “three down” MLBer. That is cliche that got old 5 years ago bra.
A MLB is a pure run stopper. He is not a TE cover guy. The most frequent use of a MLB on 3rd are with teams that feature a cover 2 D zone, which the Fins do not run, nor do they match our MLB w TE’s especially those in our conference.
Teams play far more nickle and dime on 2nd and 3rd depending on down, distance, field position. So a MLB can be of significant value on 1st and 2nd down and I for one highly recommend the fins find a good FA AND draft a LB early to groom.
Lesson is for free sista.
As safe a pick as that should be, I am still a HUGE fan of drafting 1 of the top 3 wr’s (Copper, Parker, White). The only scenario I see for Kendricks is if one of the top 3 wr’s are gone and trading down then grabbing him there. It is a position of need, however; our offense is so close to being one of top young offenses in the AFC, we need to grab a true #1 wr if opportunity is there. Could totally set ourselves up for several years to come. A LBer can be had in rounds 2 or 3, a true #1 wr is rarely, rarely picked up in the later rounds!
