A Trip to Indy and Making the Playoffs
The actual football season maybe only 16 regular-season games plus playoffs, however for NFL organizations this is a 365 days a year job. This upcoming weekend, starting from Friday will begin the combined workouts for the selected invitees for this upcoming draft class.
There are some teams and people that obsess over combine numbers, especially 40-yard dash speeds but regardless of how much weight people put into these numbers, it is a great way to get a first-hand look at some of these young players. Not only do teams have the chance to watch them complete the assigned drills, but teams have the opportunity to speak to these youngsters face to face. It’s a great way to get a feel for an individual’s personality and to see if their personality is something that can mesh well with your team and organization.
Hickey and the rest of the staff will be out in full force, and they need to continue to do their homework on a bunch of different players. Even though the Dolphins had two terrific first and second-round selections last year, they did not get much production from the rest of their draft. Compared to the recent history of Jeff Ireland this was still considered a success, however, this upcoming draft the Dolphins need to find more than just two productive starters.
Most of the pay per head reviews would say that in order to fully evaluate a draft one must wait three years to have a more complete and thorough evaluation. So in regards to last year’s draft, there still can be productive players that can contribute to the team, such as Billy Turner. Sometimes it takes a player a couple of seasons to get comfortable in the NFL and begin to understand the NFL game and their new life as a paid NFL player. However sports is a show me now, what have you done for me lately type of business and fans and coaches sometimes do not have the patience to wait for players to develop. Miami needs to get young pups that are going to bite right away. For this upcoming draft to be considered a success, they need to find at least 2 to 4 starters for 2015. The immediate success of this upcoming draft for Miami could be the difference between the Phins making the playoffs or not.

I like Marpet, but no because of his combine numbers. I liked him before, when he showed he could play with the “big boys” at the Senior Bowl. When he performed well at that level, it got my attention. He was one of the best OL the week of the Senior Bowl. Marpet likely just jumped from the 3rd or 4th Round into the mid/late 2nd Round.
I like Marpet as well. I live 15 minutes from Hobart and watched a handful of his games. Consistency consistency is his game. League personnel say he will be moved inside to guard or center. Place of need.
“…in order to fully evaluate a draft one must wait three years to have a more complete and thorough evaluation..”
This is total BS. It’s aka job security for 3 years. You can tell a BUST in the first year most of the time. See Dion Jordan. See our FG Kicker whatever his friggin name is.
You can also see BUST free agents in 1st year as well. See Fins FA at LB and OL positions. Arent these still positions of need?
Personnel has been awful, thus .500 records for the last 10 years….
When are you going to stop with all the negative bull sh@t. You either need to find a new team or get laid. Worst Dolphin fan ever
Just watched this guy in the OL drills – he can really move and would fit perfectly into Phins zone blocking scheme.
Marpet ran the 40-yard dash in 4.98 seconds Friday, the fastest 40 time among offensive linemen at the NFL Scouting Combine. Marpet — who was measured at 6-foot-3 7/8 and 307 pounds — also had the fastest 10-yard split among the linemen, at 1.74 seconds. The best 40 time among linemen at last year’s combine was 4.87, by tackle Taylor Lewan, who went in the first round to the Tennessee Titans.
Marpet was a three-year starter at left tackle for Hobart — he did not allow a sack during the 2014 season — but he seems certain to move inside in the NFL, to either guard or center.
I believe that the combination of free agency and the draft could be the difference of another .500 season or the playoffs. To expect to get 4 starters from any draft is a little far fetched. To come away with 2 starters and a handful of quality back ups with high upside I would think would be a successful draft. Now if you couple that with 3 free agent starters (that stay healthy), and we could/should be talking playoffs.
Should Miami come away from this years draft with 4 starters (not counting kickers/punters, sorry), not only could the playoffs be a real possibility in ’15, but playoffs would be the norm for several years to come. Would be nice to return the favor to the Patriots!!!
