Luke Warm on Phins Trading Top Players for Draft Picks
Top drafts picks are only good if the right players are selected
Given the current trajectory, the Miami Dolphins may not win a game this year. But that doesn’t mean they won’t ‘entertain’ us with their player personnel decisions along the way until the trading deadline October 29th. Already, in less than a month, the Dolphins have traded away 2 out of their last 4 first-round draft picks.
Sure, for years I have wanted the Dolphins to trade assets and start accumulating picks. However, trading away young, potential Pro Bowl, first-round picks wasn’t what I had hoped for.
Minkah and Tunsil were considered cornerstones just a month ago
Now there’s a lot being said about the situation with Tunsil and even more with Minkah. But there are three sides of every story: the Dolphins side, the player’s side, and the truth, which is probably somewhere in the middle of the two.
While ‘what’s done is done’, I don’t see it as some Phins News fans do. I don’t think this was all Minkahs fault and don’t agree that this is a case of he wasn’t ‘who we thought he was’.
Yes, Minkah was projected to be a player who could play many positions. But why make him learn six positions? Why not just stick him in the slot where he excelled last year, let him get comfortable enough to master that position, and THEN move him around a bit?
The Dolphins wanted to use the guy at practically every position on defense and didn’t care what this ‘supposed cornerstone’ felt about it. Also, how many players in the NFL are asked to bear that much responsibility? Not many, if any.
The other thing is that Coach Mike Tomlin (yes Super Bowl-winning and consistent playoff-bound Coach Mike Tomlin), who is known for his Defense, has stated that Minkah will be used at Safety first and won’t be asked to learn every defensive position.
I think Minkah will be terrific for the Steelers.
So I’m sorry, but I have to agree with the better coach and organization on this one. The Dolphins were asking way too much.
I will keep a close eye on Minkah and even Tunsil over the next few years. Will these players reach their full potential with their new teams? Unfortunately, I believe they will.
Miami Received three blue-chip draft picks for Tunsil and Stills. Two 1sts and a 2nd should be enough picks that even the Phins find one good player. So I’ll bet with the pay per head bookie business sites that this one to work out okay.
As for getting equal value from the Minkah trade…
… that won’t be so easy. And if the Steelers start winning, it will be even harder.
Yes, we received a 1st Round Pick for Minkah. The problem is the Phins have to actually (not in theory) select someone as good or better than Minkah. I hate to say it but Miami’s track record with draft picks isn’t the greatest. So there’s a decent chance we select a player who’ll end up more of a bust than a boom…
.. look no further than DeVante Parker and Charles Harris for proof of that. Funny, they are still here whereas Minkah and Tunsil, who have the potential to be pro bowlers, are gone.
Didn’t Chris Grier threaten to quit if they didn’t draft Minkah?
As David Hyde has said, “Ross wanted to trade back and draft Lamar Jackson… Grier wanted Minkah.”
This doesn’t give me much confidence for the future.
I’m sorry but this isn’t the way to build a team.
Now, if we are ‘Tanking for Tua’ and use that Minkah pick on an Offensive Tackle (who ends up a good one), I’ll change my tune. Miami has three first-round picks in 2020, those picks should be Tua, a Left Tackle, and another O-lineman.
And if they actually do select Tua, they’d better protect him immediately. With Miami’ luck, they’ll find the right QB finally… and then he’ll get hurt because they went cheap on their O-line.
What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans thoughts about what Miami has been doing lately?

I’d like to begin to apologize for this long rant, so if you don’t care to read a long post or someone’s long-winded opinion, please disregard. I, for one, am seeing things a little different this time around than Jimmy. I usually agree with most things he posts but I remain hopeful this organization finally came in with a plan where the coaches and the FO are on the same page. It’s been said on this, as well as other Dolphins sites, but one more time for the record, nothing that this team had been doing since Wannstead had been working out. Full rebuild was needed. The Rams were the worst team in football 3 years ago. They just went to the Super Bowl. Not many teams reach that game without a top 10 quarterback and talent around them. The only trade that’s hurt me is the Tunsil one cause I had seen his impact on the field. I feel the Tannehill era officially was over the minute Tunsil went down in the Cinncinati game last year. But even so he wasn’t a great run blocker, and this team wants to run the ball. But what GM wouldn’t have taken two firsts and a second for a very good but not elite player? We killed it in that trade. And while it remains to be seen what they will do with those picks, three blue chip picks for one not elite player is a great way to start rebuilding.
As far as Minkah goes, I’ve marinated my thoughts enough to realize that given all current circumstances, it was another great move. While the kid has some talent, I’ve gone back and watched a lot of tape from the past two seasons, and most of the big reasons he was highly touted coming out of Alabama had been overhyped. His tackling ability left a lot to be desired. Consistently takes poor angles. His versatility, well, it appears he felt so strongly about not being moved around that he quit on the team that drafted him after the first game of his second season. That to me is a huge character concern. It also doesn’t’ bode will for his leadership narrative. You can’t tell me his feelings came about because off the @ss whooping we got from the Ravens, because he’s been voicing his discontent all offseason. His mom had taken to social media to complain. To me, this means that what was most important for Fitzpatrick were his individual accolades. His mom’s involvement tells me they were just thinking about getting paid one day with his stats padded mostly on what he did best. Since when have all the great coaches, the Shulas, Belichicks, and Parcells of the world, let a rookie player, let alone his mom, tell them what’s best for their team? Coaches coach and players play. You cannot build your future with players like this. Look at the Patriots, no real superstars on defense but a bunch of smart players who play multiple positions and know their role within each one. The sum of the parts just dismantled the second best offense in the Super Bowl, and the guy calling the plays is now our head coach. I am going to trust this guy knows what he is doing. As good as the Patriots offense has been and can be, I think the defense looks even better so far. We are changing the whole scheme and mindset of players on this team, and I bet that’s easier said than done. I have already seen improvement from one game to the next.
As far as Grier goes, he has shown a talent at evaluating undrafted players. I am not going to judge him on the 1st round picks of the past because there were a lot of voices in the room, probably louder than his own. I will have the patience to judge him after this next, and most critical draft in a generation, if not more. This team needed to be burned down and rebuilt from the ashes, which most if not all Phins fans have called for in the past, and now can’t seem to stomach it after two games.
It’s going to be a long season, but it will also be a chance to evaluate the new building blocks of the future. We should look for improvement from week to week and trust that our new head coach, who spent the last 15 years coaching every defensive position on the best team of all times and shut down the best NFC team in the Super bowl with the right players (once again, no superstars), will lead us to greener pastures that we have seen in a very long time. I am excited for the future, which I hadn’t been in a really long time.
This is M.J. the other writer. I agree wholeheartedly with you. But, I can see Jimmy’s side, due to our failed history. I have been going over the film all week and I see plenty of sunshine to get this team out of the ‘worst team in history’ talk. Now, I’m not saying they will turn this into a playoffs run, but I still see 6 wins at this point. Week 6 is my big Regime review point, Diego. As for the future, the process Miami has taken is the road of greatness. It’s the right road… if the FO and Staff are at least 7 out of 10 in quality. This is the road of greatness and it doesn’t suffer fools. This is partly why I want at least 6 wins this year. A lesser regime would need the #1 overall to compensate for their deficiencies. But, the reality is, if this team gets Tua and he ends up excellent, but they are meh, this won’t end in anything meaningful.
So, I’m with you, but to Jimmy’s point, the majority of regimes would screw it up. At least though, we have the right forumla! That’s the only way to begin… the future willl shake out what is what… that’s why I’m focused onDallas right now…
Thanks for the post, brother! Hopefully, we can give Jimmy a big I told you so!!!
Diego, you echo my sentiments. Something had to change. We could not continue on the same path and expect better results.
As far as making good on the draft picks, I see hope. Grier hired some well respected people for the scout team during the offseason, so hopefully, this translates into better drafting.
I agree that fans do not seem to have the stomach for the rebuild process. Probably the ones who were screaming the loudest for it are the ones complaining the loudest now.
Hopefully, the team continues to improve each week.
“I agree that fans do not seem to have the stomach for the rebuild process. Probably the ones who were screaming the loudest for it are the ones complaining the loudest now.”
The phrase ‘be careful what you wish for’ sounds apropos.
I think they do pretty decent this week… if they make a few improvements in their secondary blockers. Dallas isn’t good at all against the run so far. I think we’ll see a nice improvement…
