Josh Rosen Starts & Phins Claim Taco Charlton

Josh Rosen Will Start & DE Taco Charlton is now a Phin

Two news reports of note came late Thursday: Josh Rosen will be Miami’s 21st starting quarterback since Dan Marino and DE Taco Charlton was signed to the 53 man roster.

Lesser story first:

The Dolphins waived guard/tackle Bryan Witzmann to make room for Charlton, who may see his first action against his former team this Sunday.

Miami is getting Charlton for the rock bottom price of $2.5Mill over the next 2 years. Charlton and Robert Nkemdiche now give Miami two former 1st Round picks on the defensive line to roll the dice on. If neither hit, no big deal. But if even one can get on track, Grier will have a big feather in his cap.

At the very least, the former 28th pick Overall in 2017 should offer some good bits of info giving the Phins a tiny edge against the Cowboys. As for on the field, Charlton has underachieved at a spectacular level racking up only 38 pressures in his career. I’m not even sure he’ll be active Sunday, but we’ll see.

Maybe the motivation to get back at his old team will spark something.

Now for the big news:

Love him or hate him, Josh Rosen will get his chance this week

In my post Patriots game article, my recipe for getting this offense heading in the right direction included having Josh Rosen as the starter. This isn’t to say that he’ll turn it around, but he does add a crucial element: arm strength to threaten the seam and deep.

Still, if Rosen wants to get the job and keep it, consistency and wise decision making is the key.

In his limited action, either due to the situation or his nature, Rosen continually passed up the easy underneath play to try and score big downfield. Yes, he had two perfect deep passes dropped. But far more often he locked on a receiver, didn’t go through his progressions, and took an unnecessary hit.

Smart in bold letters has been endlessly pointed to on Rosen’s resume… well, we’ll see how bold it really is on the field. Reality has funny a way of shaking out the truth from hype. Remember, the character was at the top of Minkah Fitzpatrick’s resume… and you know how that went.

Of course, Rosen could sink his boot knee-deep into the behinds of all his doubters too!

We’ll get a great indication after this week.

Don’t get overhyped, but don’t ho-hum this move either.

Rosen must understand he is just cog in the machine

Really this will come down the Tight Ends and Running Backs stepping up their game. They were the weakest link last week. The TEs must improve their consistency in run blocking, and the Running Back must pass block, especially Drake who has been a disaster.

Yes, the O-line has issues, but many of their issues were ironed out in Week 2. The main culprits for the offensive woes were on the secondary blockers failures, drops, and turnovers.

This is not to say the Offensive Line doesn’t need to improve, but blocking is a 9 man thing, down to down, and only 5 of them are O-linemen. The next article is a play-by-play breakdown that will demonstrate this clearly.

Rosen starting could make or break Flores

If you want to see a real circus then musical quarterbacks is the ticket. Should Rosen excel, then all will be rosy. IF Rosen bombs and this offense put out an effort like the first two weeks, ouch! I had Week 6 as my key week, it was just moved up to this Sunday.

Miami doesn’t need to win and Rosen doesn’t need to ball to keep the season alive. They just need to play like professionals and show competency to end this talk of the ‘Worst Show on Earth’.

In fact, you can bet with the bookie operation websites that the most impactful thing Rosen can do is simply manage the game… with a couple of key shots downfield. Of course, it will take a running game to do that.

I still believe Flores is telling the truth and not tanking, and I haven’t given up faith for Miami to get their 6 wins. But, if Miami flops this week as hard as their last two games, I might start singing a different tune. Go Phins!!!

The Fins currently have (3) 1st rounds pick’s in the 2020 draft.

    1. The Fins drafting Wisconsin The Running Back, Johnathan Taylor A culture changer for the Dolphins.

Note: The first item on Jimmy Johnson’s checklist for appraising talent might surprise people.

    “Intelligence is the first thing,’’

A few weeks into his first semester at Wisconsin, annually ranked as one of the nation’s top public universities—a factor that softened the blow of not going to Harvard—Taylor figured a way to get an astrophysics major from the university that doesn’t offer one.
He’d have to get a double major in astronomy and physics.

Many Dolphin Fans will go to bed saying linemen, We know just how important they are both offensive and defensively. I just see the best results in the 1st round- (QB-O/L- R/B Taylor only running back for the 1st round)

Just and example what Jimmy Johnson thought was important during his make or die draft seasons leading to Dallas Super Bowl:

    Micheal Irving Miami (FL)
    NFL Draft
    1988 / Round: 1 / Pick: 11

The number one overall draft pick in 1989, Aikman
    NFL Draft
    1989 / Round: 1 / Pick: 1
    college

    Emmitt Smith Running Back
    NFL Draft
    1990 / Round: 1 / Pick: 17

Taken from Hide Sun Sentinel on Jimmy Johnson.

The first item on Jimmy’s checklist for appraising talent might surprise people.

“Intelligence is the first thing,’’ he said. “Four of the first players I drafted in Dallas were Academic All-Americans. Troy Aikman. Daryl Johnston. Mark Stepnoski. Tony Tolbert. The thing I’d say is hit me over the head with a hammer the next time I draft a dumb guy.

“I looked at Dan when I was [at the Dolphins] and said, ‘Cecil The Diesel,’ he said of Cecil Collins, the troubled running back he took in the fifth round with the Dolphins. “You take a flyer on a guy and hope he turns it around. There’s some exceptions. I’ve taken some guys like that. Most times I’ve regretted it.”

The second thing he looks for: A playmaker.

    Third: A gym rat.

    Fourth: Speed and quickness.

    Fifth: Character.

Yeah, Bill went to speak with Jimmy multiple times to understand his views on drafting. Bill altered playmaker to how they handle critical situations. Also, character was moved up higher than Gym rat and athletic talent… Troubled players are rarely turned around.

Started to study them… so hard to evaluate them… really need to spend some serious time in getting better at it.

You really are an optimist even when every body is throwing buckets of water out of the boat?

We can go two linemen one QB but we need production from the backfield.

(2)Andrew Thomas Georgia Jr OT https://youtu.be/uie24vz5btk
(7)Javon Kinlaw South Carolina Sr DL https://youtu.be/X7OqVTexMIk
(9)Trey Adams Washington Sr OT https://youtu.be/hrIcOC6YHXo
(12)Calvin Throckmorton Oregon Sr OT https://youtu.be/kIGgZIlHaAg
(19)Walker Little Stanford Jr OT Walker Little Stanford Jr OT
(22)Alaric Jackson Iowa Jr OL https://youtu.be/O6H0ESTmWt0
    (24)Tyler Biadasz Wisconsin Jr C https://youtu.be/-J6zrkC6jKE

My Picks in the 1st round. I don’t think Taylor will fall to the second round and he will be an Heisman finalist hopeful this season. Miami Dolphins Fans are really haters when selecting a solid Running Back. But That Solid Running Back will be a QB helper.

I would consider this option and get that second linemen in the second round.
    Tua
Trey Adams Washington Sr OT 2
Jonathan Taylor Wisconsin Jr RB 1 https://youtu.be/nSJhjfN6fUw

By the way just heard Antonio Brown is released from the Patriots. I thought the PAT were making a mistake with that guy. There is something really wrong with him.

The bottom line for Rosen is he is “SET UP TO FAIL”

    • admin

Nah… if the RBs and TE decide to block consistently, he’ll be fine. Now, will he screw it up? I think this unit of blockers from OL to WR could take a solid step forward. Dallas isn’t a powerhouse in Run D. I think this could be a reasonable game going into the 4th.
