Phins V.S. Bills: Close, But No Cigar

It looked like the Phins would pull out the win, but mistakes sent them into a nosedive late

For almost 3 quarters of Miami’s game against the Bills, there was a feeling that the first win of 2019 was coming. But, the Phins followed up a brilliant trick field goal that earned them 1st & Goal with back-to-back negative plays…

… And then the nosedive started.

This time though fans can’t pin the loss on the staff.

Let’s keep this game in context: The Bills nearly beat the Pats, were 4-1, at home, and were given a huge spread on the game. This was supposed to be a shellacking. It wasn’t.

Despite being down Xavien Howard, Reshad Jones, and Christian Wilkens, the defense held up well. Also, the offense moved the ball well enough to be in the position to take a 2 score lead well into the 2nd Half. But a missed block that led to a sack followed by an interception and a fumble by Williams proved too much for the Phins to overcome. The players will have to take a long look in the mirror if they want answers.

Still, the Dolphins did show some good this week, despite not getting the win. Yes, this is a very ugly season, but 2019 is all about findings some pieces to help the 2020 team.

Some aspects of this team are starting to shine
  • Preston Williams is a steal as a UDFA. He still needs to refine his game, but at this point, he is equal to DeVante Parker and Miami spent a 1st Round Pick on him.
  • Mike Gesicki is slowly finding his place, and his production and confidence are growing.
  • I don’t know if Evan Boehm is Miami’s center of the future, but he is certainly the center of today. Daniel Kilgore is a great leader on the roster. Unfortunately, he is too small and weak to be effective. Boehm peeled open the stout Bills defensive line. While Boehm has trouble with pulls, in man and inside zone blocks, he makes this offense a whole lot more physical. He did miss a crucial block that led to Fitz getting sacked though.
  • Mark Walton is the best running back on the team. He does need to improve his pass blocking, but his production on the ground and in the receiving lifts the offense.
  • Devante Parker is quietly having the best season of his career… if he can finish it off without injury. He still isn’t playing up to his draft status or contract, but given his current trajectory, there is hope that he might.
  • Many of the pay per head bookie software sites were shocked when Miami released Vincent Taylor and John Jenkins was signed. I was one of them. We were all wrong. Vincent hasn’t played a snap in 2019 and Jenkins is playing like a stud in this scheme with an elite PFF Grade of 86.8. Surprisingly his pass-rush grade is higher than his run-stopping grade.
  • Vince Biegel has the ‘Rob Nikovich’ feel. At every level of responsibility, Biegal has performed well. Playing with a high motor, intelligence, and versatility, he has been one of the few defensive bright spots.
  • Raekwon McMillan has made strides in his game. He still struggles a bit in space, but his play diagnosis/reaction is catching up to his excellent short area burst. His hit and miss style is becoming more hit than miss.
Up next: Dolphins v.s. Steelers

The Dolphins play on Monday Night Football this week against the Steelers. Miami will have the odds stacked against them in Minkah’s “revenge game”. But, the Steelers have their own issues this season as well, so it’s possible the Phins can make it a close one. Even if the Dolphins continue to lose, at least if they can keep the games close and some players step up it will offer some hope to Phins fans heading into 2020.

The Jets are not trying to Tanked? We are and we looked good Sunday most of the game.

What gives with the New York Jets defense? They have invested their 1st round picked the last nine years on a defensive player and Brady drop back over 47 times last night to passed with no sacks from the Jets.

    2010 29 Kyle Wilson CB Boise State 6* 5 [34]
    2011 30 Muhammad Wilkerson DL Temple University 5* 5 [35]
    2012 16 Quinton Coples DE North Carolina 4* 4
    2013 9 Dee Milliner CB Alabama 3* 3
    13 Sheldon Richardson DT Missouri 5* 4
    2014 18 Calvin Pryor S Louisville 2* 2
    2015 6 Leonard Williams DT USC 4* 4*

I’m sorry but if a D/L is drafted in the 1st round it means double team most of the game?

Talking to yourself 🙂 Watch the beginning of the game and Darnold fumbled and threw an int in the 1st Qtr. I think the team kinda’ quit after that.

          Yeap!

Darnold 5 turnovers and the Jets have won only one game. Are you letting Gase off the Hooked he kept Darnold in the game?

Nice Article! I was able to see the highlights of the game and like you said I looked for our offense to
really have problems moving the ball against the Bills defense but instead the Dolphins appeared to me like a team with some potential,to have lost and traded so many players. So just maybe the Fins are bad but not really depleted. Yes! the pressure of losing and the jokes behind those losses is another issue to address because its only going to get worse. But on a positive the opportunities for those Dolphins players who would not get playing time have the opportunity to really display their talent to make the team and other teams.

It’s a lot of pressure, but losing reveals more about person than winning. They should have won that game… I don’t know. After that 2pt conversion last week, I swore they were tanking… but are they purposely trying to lose? It’s a crazy season… crazy.
