Miami Dolphins Make a Trade & Cuts
Miami Dolphins made some moves before Training Camp opens to veterans
The Miami Dolphins traded for a tight end and cut a few players over the last couple of days. With the mid-August roster cut down to 80 players fast approaching, Brian Flores released some veterans that were likely only camp bodies. Flores knows what these released veterans talents offer should he need to sign them down the road. Why spend precious evaluating players that have already been evaluated… and found wanting?
Flores is showing real wisdom in finalizing his Training Camp roster early. A trimmer roster allows the staff more time to focus on evaluating those players who will be on the bubble at the end of camp. This season the Practice Squad roster has been bumped up from 10 to 16 players, so Miami can stash more fringe players than ever. As we saw last season, Practice Squad players can play a crucial role in a team’s success. —
Can the former 2nd Round pick make good?
While the new roster limit forced an early trim, it also forced the early availability of Tight End Adam Shaheen from the Chicago Bears.
NFL.com reported: “Chicago retained J.P. Holtz, added free agents Jimmy Graham and Demetrius Harris and drafted two TEs, including Notre Dame’s Cole Kmet in the second round, this offseason, making Shaheen expendable.”
The former 2nd Round pick Shaheen was acquired in exchange for a lowly conditional 7th Round. While the pick can become a 6th Round pick, it’s still a cheap deal for a roll of the dice. Not too shabby.
Shaheen is huge at 6’6” and 257lbs, a blue-chip prospect, and has some talent. After his rookie season, the Bears saw enough to believe he could be part of their future. In the years since, he hasn’t demonstrated a high level of body control and was often off his feet, which indicates a lack of athleticism. But, the real reason his career has derailed is injuries.
Out of 48 possible games, Shaheen has only played in 27 because of injuries. In fact, he hasn’t strung together one complete season. A chest injury and foot injury followed up by a fractured ankle in 2019 that sent him to the injured reserve has all but deep-sixed his career. The opportunity with the Phins looks like it could be his last stop.
Can Miami find a way to keep him healthy?
Shaheen will compete with veterans Michael Roberts, Chris Myarick, Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe, and UDFA Bryce Sterk for a job. Ultimately, a good bet with the pay per head bookie services is Shaheen was acquired to push the other players. But, maybe a career renaissance is just around the corner?
Miami cut a few players expect to go at some point
The Miami Dolphins parted way with defensive tackle Ray Lima, quarterback Jake Rudock, receiver Ricardo Louis, linebacker Trent Harris, and defensive end Avery Moss. Phins fans expected all of these players to at some point, especially will all the players added to their positions.
Quarterback, receiver, and edge players are stuffed to the brim and none of these players would make the Week 1 roster. So, nothing substantial or surprising lost because of this new Training Camp roster limit… yet. The Dolphins have 83 players on the roster currently, so they’ll need to cut three more in a couple of weeks. Plenty of time for a good evaluation before then.
