Key Narratives After Phins Scrimmage

The Phins had their 1st scrimmage of the 2020 Training Camp

The Miami Dolphins scrimmaged Tuesday and fans received their 1st ‘look’ at the 2020 Phins… via the observations of 5 beat reporters. Usually, fans get a full slate of preseason games to compare with the reports they read, but as we all know, this season is different. We must sift through the articles, social media, and blogs to get even a remote idea on how things are going. The problem is that even the best football minds don’t always see things the same way. So, while most reports have been near lockstep, some have disagreed. Thankfully, the scrimmage went a long way towards clearing things up.

Let’s start with the concerning news first

The most positive information coming out of camp so far has been the lack of talk about the offensive line. As the saying goes, the only time people notice offensive linemen is when they mess up.

We’ve heard of a ‘quietly good’ camp for LT Austin Jackson and the surprisingly good play of RG Solomon Kindley. The negatives have been Michael Dieter’s poor snapping as he transitions to center and the lack of accolades from T/G Robert Hunt. The biggest concern was that veteran Jesse Davis has struggled somewhat and even had a quick demotion. Overall though, the pressure on the quarterbacks has been manageable. In years past, reports of an ugly O-line surfaced within days after the start of camp. It appeared that this offensive line had finally been infused with enough talent to play at a competent level.

This ‘quiet and positive’ narrative took a hit in the scrimmage with multiple writers reporting that there was heavy pressure on the quarterbacks. Now, we don’t have crucial information about matchups, what the lineups were, and who did what, so fans should take this uneven performance in stride. Still, there’s nothing to jump for joy about the O-line yet.

Let’s remember though, this is still the ‘trying out’ portion of Training Camp where the staff is throwing things at the wall to see what they have. Also, there are a ton of rookies and FAs on the roster. With so many new faces chemistry is in flux. Bookmaking Guidelines – How to Write Original Material.

Offensive Line key points
  • Adam Pankey has been rising up the depth chart at guard/tackle. He’s a dark horse, but fans should keep their eye on him.
  • Last year’s starter Shaq Calhoun seems to be out of the picture.
  • Robert Hunt is creeping up on Davis, who is at the crossroads of his Phins career.
  • The lack of talk about Ted Karras is very good news.
  • At least 6 passes were batted down in the scrimmage.
  • Davis was beaten for a sack and was flagged for a hold.

How this storyline develops will be THE key to the Phins 2020 success. Fingers and toes crossed for good luck.

Other important revelations from the scrimmage
  • With Kyle Van Noy absent, Andrew Van Ginkel had an excellent day with two defections and a pick.
  • Nik Needham rang the bell to say ‘what about me’ with a quality show.
  • Newly acquired FA tight end, Adam Shaheen had an eye-popping day. you can bet with the pay per head review sites that he is vying for that third TE spot. Can he stay healthy, though?
  • Rookie Jason Strowbridge and veterans Emmanuel Ogbah and Shaq Lawson brought pressure all day. Was because they were good, the O-line bad, or a mixture of the two?
  • Jakeem Grant continues to battle injuries.
  • Tua had two TDs and a pick. Some reported a good day other meh.
  • There was a Kalen Ballage sighting with multiple broken tackles and a long run.
  • Eric Rowe is trending either horizontal or down.
  • Fitzmagic was hot and cold with 7 straight incompletions and 4 TDs.

Well, it’s early and there’s about two weeks more of prep before the season. This week will be a big one as the staff will make calls based on the scrimmage and start tune-up for the real thing come Week 1. Go Phins!!!

The Phins had their first real football activities with a scrimmage Tuesday, so what were the key narrative coming out of it?

Did Flores tip his hand about draft priorities next year?

What I love about Flo is that he isn’t full of BS, who just sits and fires clichés one after another when asked questions by the media, like a Chuck Pagano:

“It’s was a tough choice, tough situation…we had to evaluate all the options on the table…at the end of the day we are gonna do what’s best for the football team,” yadda yadda.

When asked about Weaver getting cut this is roughly what he said:

“A lot of things go into making the decision, severity of the injury, player performance, salary cap, depth at the position, next years draft….”

What I heard in plain English was that Weaver was gonna be a lot of work and he wasn’t showing the discipline and the love of football he would like to have seen. Add that to the fact that this year is a scratch with what sounds to be a significant injury, doesn’t make sense holding on to him. Especially if he has seen good things from KVM, AVN, Roberts, Eguavoen, and Baker. As the author reported in a previous article, there where tough choices ahead at LB.

What I found the most interesting is him mentioning next year’s draft. Hmmm. Doesn’t sound like a low priority position if you are already calculating how crowded the room is gonna be with a smallish, fifth round pick that is gonna have a redshirt year. For my money, I think Flores wants a beast OLB/DE in the first round.
A lot of talk of Rousseau to Miami in the media. You can see how with a shutdown back end defense the next best thing is a guy who can get to the QB one on one and really speed up the pressure on the QB.

Just food for thought…. Starving for some football here.

Great point, Diego. I wasn’t going to do a Weaver article but stick in as a part of another. I’m going to use your points and some of my own a Weaver article (I think… if I can fit it in).

Great points… I try to get it cracking over here and I’ll put your name in for credit on those excellent ideas…

Thank you, it’s pretty cyclical since I get a lot of my input from this website :).

I was just saying I thought I caught a rare moment of foresight from a coach that comes from the NE School of secrecy.

Premier pass rusher definitely sounds like an enticing option with our first pick in 2021.

No, the point about Flores mentioning the draft as an indication that he has his sights on an OLB high next year as a piece of the puzzle for Weaver’s release is a key piece… and all yours.
