The Rams / Lions trade makes Watson to Phins a huge pill to swallow
While the Ram and Lions blockbuster trade didn’t involve the Dolphins, it does put the Phins on high alert because there is now a base market value for Deshaun Watson. And boy-oh-boy is that price sky-high! The LA Rams traded two first-round picks and a third-round pick, along with their starting QB Jared Goff, to get 32-year-old Matthew Stafford! What on earth would the price be for 25-year old Watson!
Also, I’m a big fan and believer in Tua. So for me, the Watson trade is a double whammy!
Rams are getting old, Phins are just getting started
The Rams are no strangers in trading away first-round picks. They’ve done this on multiple occasions. The Rams are a couple of years removed from a Super Bowl appearance and made it to the second round of the playoffs this year. So, this move was made because they feel like they are on the cusp of returning to the Super Bowl…
… and maybe because this regime feels like they are running out of time.
The Phins are in a totally different situation.
The best PPH sportsbook software is betting that a trade for Watson, who is a younger and better franchise QB than Stafford, will cost at least 3 first-round picks!
Let me emphasize AT LEAST!
We took two 1sts and two seconds for Tunsil. So, the Dolphins would need to fork-up 3 first-round picks, Tua, and a little bit more.
Given this reality… can we put to rest any talk of Watson going to Miami?!
Miami’s old offseason tactics were always a disaster
As much as I like Watson and believe he will do great wherever he lands, I just don’t want the Dolphins to go back to the old ways. For years during the offseason, the Phins paid heaps of cash to the biggest names and traded away assets. Then Coach Flores came in a did a proper reset and rebuild. After only two years, the Dolphins are ahead of schedule after a 10 win season.They are now flush with cap space, loaded with draft picks for the second straight year, and have a ton of young players.
Instead of talking about trading away picks for one player, let’s talk about the opposite of stockpiling some more picks. Why not trade back from the #3 Overall pick or if Howard really does want a new contract, then sell high. Maybe we can get a first-round pick or two for him. The Jets got two 1st round picks and a third-round pick for Safety Jamal Addams last year! There’s no reason the Dolphins couldn’t get something similar for arguably the best Cornerback in the league.
Just imagine if the Phins had a handful of 1st Round picks to work with what they could do?
Quarterbacks are key, but they need a team around them
Phins fans need to focus on these two points:
Even with the huge focus on the quarterback position, the NFL IS a team sport. Watson needs to be surrounded with talent and giving away the farm and his huge salary will leave little room to add all the talent that we still need to add. This will leave Miami repeating how it went in Texas… and that’s not good enough.
Why throw in the towel on Tua after half a season? After all, we had a winning record in Tua’s 1st season. Let’s just use our cap space, draft a balanced and explosive offense around him, and give him a fair chance in Year 2. Don’t forget this was not a normal offseason because of Covid. Tua won’t be recovering from an injury this time around, so he’ll get a full offseason to work on his craft.
Before we sell the future, let’s see if Tua can make a big jump in his second season. If not, then with all the extra picks from a trade back and /or trade of Howard, we can go fish for a quarterback in 2022.

I totally agree. Let’s forget this nonsense regarding a Tua for Watson trade! Not going to happen! This team still has too many holes to fill and adding Watson would hamstring this team just like it did numerous times before. Stick with adding draft picks and sensible FA’s. OL still needs to come along, WIP. Add at least one good sold Guard. DL needs 2 DL/DT’s. One to replace Godchaux who will be leaving, and another. Depth is needed. Need to draft early on a strong MLB. In the 1st round Need 1 top flight WR (Devonta Smith), and RB that is 230+ lbs. Alabama’s Najee Harris is good one for sure! Finally, I like Tua. MJ disagrees with me, but I don’t feel he played that bad considering the situation. Any QB, Tua, Watson, or anyone else needs an O-Line and weaspons. Parker and Williams are strong WR pair when healthy. When healthy is the operative word. They can not be depended upon to play full seasons. I hope coaching the Senior Bowl will give this team some more insight going into the draft! Excited for 2021. Now let’s get past this Covid crap!
I was away on a semi-impromptu biz trip… I’m the resident comment answerer here at Phins, so sorry for the delay, You know my stance… If Howard is a jerk move on for the right price… if not, Phins have all the leverage. Never pay … maybe if he has two healthy and excellent back to back seasons… but not now. I still think Phins need to have some sort of legit plan B with Tua… I don’t like a RB in RD 1 though. I’d rather a good lineman. 95% of backs are mostly a product of the Oline… Need to watch more of the kids film, but I haven’t seen anything elite from them. Yeah, let’s get past this Covid crap ASAP!!!!!
