No Sophomore Slump Here

When the Dolphins were trading picks back and forth like a Las Vegas Casino dealer in the 2014 draft when they finally decided to play their hand at the end of the second round by drafting a controversial receiver in Jarvis Landry.

Most of the pay per head bookie service sites like AcePerHead.com felt Landry was too slow to play at the next level, based on the all-important 40 yard dash time. Besides being considered too slow to get separation in the NFL, he was also considered small at 5’11”. However, Landry proved he has something that can not be measured by NFL scouts, which is heart and determination.

In training camp last season, he was catching everything thrown his way, and as a result, was quickly pushing for playing time. He did not record any catches in the first game of the season against the Patriots, but in the second game against Buffalo, he recorded 5 catches on 6 targets for 49 yards. After that, as they say in show business, the rest is history, he broke the Miami Dolphins rookie record for most catches in a season with 84 and added 758 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns. By the end of the season he was one of Ryan Tannehill’s favorite targets, averaging 7 catches a game over that last 6 games.

Miami has spent this off-season revamping their wide receiving unit, but Landry is the sole starter from last season that is still on the team. Already during mini-camp Landry has caught everything in site, including some incredible one-handed catches, and his chemistry with Tannehill is incomparable to the other receivers on the team. Since it takes some time for QB’s and receivers to get on the same page, expect Tannehill to use Landry as a safety valve early and often this season.

O.J. McDuffie holds the Miami Dolphins all-time receptions record at 90, and most would agree that that record is going to be in serious danger of being broken this season by Landry. Landry has already looked very sharp this off-season, and he is putting in the extra work after practice as well, and his confidence is clearly rising. The Dolphins have a lot of quality receivers on the roster in Parker, Jennings, Stills, Matthews, and Hazel, but my money is on Landry to have the biggest impact at the receiver position for the phins this season. He will be the guy that Tannehill looks for on third down, and he is a shifty receiver that can also pick up yards after the catch unlike previous go-to receivers for the Dolphins like Bess and Hartline. One thing Landry definitely needs to improve on is holding onto the ball after he catches it because last season he had 7 fumbles and 4 led to turnovers.

I truly believe that Landry is going to be one of the most dominant slot receivers in the entire NFL this season, and may even be in the conversation for a Pro Bowl spot. Landry is working his tail off to be the best, and he and the Dolphins will reap the benefits of all his hard work. What kind of season does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans think Landry will put up this year?

  • Are we close to signing the guard from from the previous post??

I believe he can be one of the best slots in football. But I also think if injuries don’t hit Parker, Cameron and the rest of the wideouts then Tannehill will spread the ball around a lot. Not to mention Cameron and Parker will be the red zone targets along with Ajayi and Miller running it more. I am more excited about our offense this year than any time since Marino retired

I agree that Landry can be one of the best slot receivers in football and even though he may not get as many looks because Tannehill will be spreading the ball around, he will make the most of all his opportunites
