What happened to the Dink and Dunk Offense?
The Dolphins offense has regressed in Lazor’s second year as offensive coordinator, and that is unacceptable. With familiarity, the offense is supposed to get easier to manage and more efficient, and even though there are new players incorporated in the offense, they are better players, so the offense should be better. In three games the offense is only averaging 17 points per game, which is 27th in the entire league. Last season, and in this preseason the offense was able to move up and down the field and at least score some points.
What happened to the dink and dunk offense?
They are throwing the ball a lot but they are not throwing a lot of those short passes that Tannehill and the offense excelled at last season. I can’t believe I am going to say this, but they are throwing too many long and intermediate passes, and the result is less completions.
In addition, what happened to Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings? Stills has 3 catches on 8 targets and Greg Jennings has 4 catches on 11 targets. Neither player has a touchdown, and they have combined for a dismal 3 first downs. I would say we should get these players more involved in the offense, however I do not really think that will help. Jennings is a year or two from retiring, so most of the guys at the best pay per head reviews would say, “what is the point in giving him more playing time, when the Dolphins could be focusing on giving DeVante Parker more opportunities?” Parker has 4 catches on 8 targets, with no touchdowns and 2 first downs, however, he has been used sparingly. In regards to Stills, this coaching staff, and Tannehill do not know how to get speedy receivers involved in the offense, and this was the same thing that happened with Mike Wallace, so I highly doubt this light bulb will click on, any time soon.
The Dolphins have been throwing the ball over 70% of the time, which is the opposite of a balanced offense. Sadly with this coaching staff, that ratio is probably not going to change too much. If that is the case, and I can’t believe I am even saying this, but it is becoming exhaustively clear that they are not going to give the run game a chance, then at least lets focus on throwing passes that have a high percentage of being completed. Throw more quick slants, dump passes, running back and wide receiver screens, and then let the playmakers make plays after the catch. Also take advantage of Tannehill’s athleticism and let him run more option plays, so he can use his legs to make plays.
Lastly the Dolphins need to shake up the offensive line. Jamil Douglas has been getting toasted, and it is time to at least give Billy Turner or Sam Brenner a shot. Also Samson Satele is actually still a free agent, and he did an admirable job at center last season, so why not re-sign him, and then put him at center and move Pouncey over to Guard? It is worth three lost games to get rid of Philbin. We never had a chance of getting to the playoffs with him. Coyle is a average or worse – if there is anyone on the team or available who can do the job get rid of him, if not probation. Lazor has been a disappointment. Time for a come to Jesus meeting with him – perform or go. On offense the core problem is a porous OL. Task for the OL coach. But also means throwing screen passes, outlet passes, running the ball, using two tight ends, compensating. We have great WR if Tannehill has the time to throw them the ball. The only thing working right now is the special teams. We have great talent – the best we have had since the mid-1980s. I am hoping that with Campbell we have some inspiration, intensity, toughness and get some will and heart. From there it is up to Lazor (and the replacement of Coyle to fix the Xs and Os. This is all do-able. Less talented teams than us have made the playoffs through toughness and will.
This is a college scheme offense. 100% out of shotgun w no running game. Lazor calls playaction on 3rd and long…as if anyone is fooled. Not having any I-formation plays, no FB, no blocking back, no run game whatsoever.
Add to this that playaction in the shotgun, with a porous OL, actually reduces Tanny’s read time because he has to act out the fake handoff, hes not looking downfield, so its a compound problem.
The entire regime has to go.

Coaching is really bad and it shows
Jimmy, I completely agree. The short quick passes will help set up the running game better, not to mention the long ball! We got the new receiver set for the exact reason to create yards after catch (YAC). This is something the team was very poor at last year. The addition of Stills, Jennings, Cameron, etc., was to get those YAC yards. As I have said in previous posts, I really believe the problem is coaching plain and simple!!!
