Philbin: $&#% Canned!!!
The Dolphins have just announced that they have sent Coach Joe Philbin to pasture, which was the RIGHT move. Tight end coach Dan Campbell is set to become the interim head coach. Campbell has a lot of respect from the players and it seems that they would actually play hard for him.
This may just be me making up a conspiracy theory, but while watching the first 4 games of the season I truly believed that the players were not trying, because they wanted Philbin to be fired. Honestly, it looked like the players were purposely not playing hard. There were reports that the players were not happy about the intensity of the practices and the play-calling, so it would be reasonable that they didn’t give their full effort for Philbin, in order to force a change. I’m sure if we asked the players they would deny this, but the reality is this team has played like they don’t care.

Now the players have no more excuses because now they got what they wanted in having Philbin fired. They have a bye week, which means they have 2 weeks to prepare for their next opponent, the Titans in Tennessee.
Dan Campbell is 39 years old, which makes him the youngest active Head Coach in the NFL, and he actually played in the NFL for the Giants, Cowboys, and Lions, and won a Super Bowl with the Giants. This could go a long way because no one knows the grueling toll of the NFL season better than a former player. The players respect him and like him, so there is a good chance they actually may play hard for him. Campbell has been the Dolphins Tight End Coach since 2011, which means he knows these players very well.
It would have been nice if they also fired Coyle because the best pay per head reviews would say that he might have been even worse than Philbin. Coyle has been so bad that his unit has actually regressed each season. Hopefully, Ross will make one more move and get rid of Coyle before the next game.
It would be great to see Campbell take over and make a real difference and actually get this team to start playing good football…A.KA winning games. However, this is going to be a tall order, especially for a rookie Head Coach. What does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans think about Campbell taking over as the interim coach?

We have hired Al Saunders as an Offensive Consultant. Good move, because Lazor needs help w/his play calling and game management.
Saunders was hired for the same position in Baltimore, 2009. That season Baltimore finished 9th in the league in scoring and 9th in the league in total offense. Ray Rice ran for 1339 yards along with 700+ yds receiving and Baltimore had the 5th best rushing attack in the league. Baltimore also had the 18th ranked passing attack with the likes of Masson, Clayton, Washington and Heap.
This is another positive move that can only help a predictable offense and mainly the struggling offensive coordinator.
yup, Im not a beliver in Lazor’s offense at all. No balance. No power. No physicality. All runs are parallel to the LOS. Playaction fools nobody. No short game. No long game. No FB. And I dont believe in zone blocking scheme with this OL talent level…too much thinking on the fly. Id rather they man-up and blast away.
But hey….
So it did turn out to be the bye-bye Philbin week. Hopefully, its not too late to salvage the season. Finding a reliable DC is going to be a challenge.
Yes we need to find a DC that knows how to play call to our players strengths
Things are already looking up. Grimes MRI comes back negative, no structural damage. He may be back for the Titans game. Huge news considering!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Very true, Grimes is a beast and we need him
Your premise of this article is moronic. To say NFL players intentionally dogged it to get their HC fired is so middle school-ish, it throws all respect for any level of junior journalism out the window.
Players play for many reasons, one of which is professionalism and personal pride. Not to mention they play for their next contract, or team, etc.
You obviously have never competed in the arena, nor have you ever led competitors or else you would know how stupid your assertion is.
As for Campbell, he reminds me of a young Cowher…of course, he is a long shot to stick in this role especially with the other idiot Tannenbaum pulling the strings but you gotta wish the best for Campbell, he put his finger on the sore.
Jimmy,
I’m to the point of bitterness that I can’t imagine ANY HC fixing this team by himself. And I’m pretty sure that Dan doesn’t have “Carte’ Blanche'” to actually implement what needs to be done which
may, or may not, include firings and position switches. On the OL alone, we have an LT who is perpetually injured ( that is his history ), a back-up LT (Fox)who can’t stop a bad DL, much less a good one. A LG that has been called-out as inadequate by virtually every reader that I have read. A Pro-Bowl C who can’t do it by himself, a rookie RT who either doesn’t know the scheme, or who doesn’t have the strength to hold off a DL, and a 2nd year RT who has digressed this year for whatever reason. RB’s who can’t run through non-existent holes, a quarterback who is shell-shocked from the hits he’s taking and who’s downfield accuracy and velocity are suspect and whose completions ( over 15 yards ) to date are minimal. Jamar ( CB ) is, and has been inadequate, Brice had one decent game and has been sorely beaten since. Brent ( CB ) hasn’t been what he used to be, nor has Wake ( RDE).
Our linebackers who they are as are our CB’s. Few can play 10 feet off a man and expect to catch that man downfield. Rashad ( our one good SS ) has played very well, but cannot be expected to be every everywhere. The rest of the DB’s are just mix and match IMO. Everyone knows how good our slot receiver is, but accolades to him for his persistent excellence and drive. I am happy that, so far,
our kicker and punter are doing well. Who does that leave ? Well, what can we say about Suh ? Uhhh,
a big fellow who draws double-blocks and isn’t particularly good at pursuit of running backs. The burning question I have is one of comparison and it is this: Do most NFL clubs have 24 coaches. God in Heaven, that would seem to be a coach for about ever 2 active players ? Really ? They must stumble over each other in practice, but I don’t imagine anyone get’s hurt as all the practices are walk-throughs – I hear. Thanks for letting me state the obvious. I have been a fan of this team since pre-Shula days and this is painful to read about – much less watch. Go Dolphins !! Said weakly.
Fred, Understand what you mean. However; Albert has been a disappointment, but you just can’t account for injuries. Should he get healthy coming out of the bye, PLUS.
What is Dallas’s strengths (not many), the run blocking, and this staff did not take advantage of that, instead they threw 80%. Have a feeling the new scheme will run as much as pass.
Our rookie RT has been over matched in the passing game, again his strength right now being run blocking/pulling. Again, sure there will be a different offensive philosophy (run the ball).
Our RB’s can’t run through non-existent holes because when they did run, it was obvious that we were running the ball. The 1 first down run of 11 yards Sunday had a huge hole, behind Douglas.
Our CB’s have been put in a impossible situation due to the defensive scheme. There has been no pressure, no creative coverage’s and the D has been on the field way to long (due to non attempts of running the ball). Even Revis Island and Cromartie would struggle in that scheme. Constant pressure or at least the threat of blitzes makes all corners better.
So Fred, it is still football. And, it does come down to schemes and X’s and O’s. Do you need the players, yes, said players do exists on this roster. You would be surprise what a few subtle changes could do for any team.
You have to like everything Coach Campbell is about. Everyone thought that just because we picked up Suh, that our team automatically became a bully, a team with some nastiness. Not the case with that staff running the ship.
We also know now what weekly/daily practices were like on a regular basis, Coach Campbell pretty much came right out and said so in his press conference. Players were not being pushed, most of the practices outside of the individual drills were walk throughs’, a modified pace. Now we understand why none of the rookies/2nd year players just do not see the field…. Because they do not get the opportunity to compete in practice, you can’t get noticed, you can’t stand out in walk throughs’ unless you have perfect technique, etc., and your still behind the vet.
You have to like that he called players out. Actually calling players out by names, not your rooks or practice players, but team leaders.
The happiest player has to be Lamar Miller, then again seems Lazor is staying put. I hope that Campbell insists that Lazor starts incorporating the run, use the run to set up the pass, not vice versa (we’ve been trying that method for 3+ years now).
Coach Campbell, you MUST make your first big decision/move and ride this franchise of COYLE. Should you keep Coyle aboard (unless it was Philbin himself holding Coyle back-highly doubtful) you would be setting yourself up for failure. Bring in a fresh face, new scheme/ideas/thoughts.
While some/most people/critics (Freak), see this as a crippled franchise, a monstrous blowup, a team/franchise starting/rebuilding over again. You can believe that Campbell doesn’t see it that way, and if these players have any pride they are not seeing it that way either. The season is only 1/4 of the way through. Yes, they have put themselves into a tough situation, but not impossible. It starts with the Titans followed by the Texans. Get to .500 w/the 2 games coming out of the bye and w/10 games left anything could be possible. The next 5 games WILL sum up the season, with 4 out of those 5 on the road and one of those a short week Thursday game, they will get a modified bye (extended break, that could come at a perfect time for this team and staff after that Thursday game).
Call me crazy, call me nutz, call me optimistic (I am a educator, so I see everything with optimism) and yes Freak I am drinking Coach Campbell’s Kool-Ade. I will be glued to the TV next Sunday as if it were opening day all over again. That is the nice thing about this, my Kool-Ade is refreshing, has a different taste, my NFL season starts on the 18th. Not to many people/teams can say that (or want to, or wish they could). I really like Coach Campbell’s style, all players are going to be accountable, competition will actually exist throughout the week. You can believe Suh will not wear sneakers to Coach Campbell’s practices.
Opening Day all over again for the Fins, with their goal still attainable. I am more excited now than I was on Sept.13th. Yes, I was drinking the Kool-Ade then, but it was the same dull flavor it had been for the last 3 years. This Kool-Ade has some flare, has some kick to it. Don’t know if this Kool-Ade will be a seasonable flavor or will enough people like and request that flavor remains.
Opening Day 2015, October 18 1:00 pm Tennessee. Lets go Fins!!!!
Jimmy hinted at it in one his last articles, but I also heard it from an NFL and Miami Herald article that quoted “sources” that the team had given up, wanted him gone and was plying like it. I felt even last year it started and Odrick was the poster boy.
Jimmy
I like what Coach Campbell stated the offensive line, the toughness of the team etc. This means establishing a run game! We know that Tannehill is good for 2 touchdowns. So! the rest of team needs to contribute i.e (Run, special teams, defense needs to score.
Good Luck Coach Campbell (Please donot fall into the tramp of passing 70 to 80%) Balance wins games!
Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator should leave with Phibin they failed him.
Jimmy this is the first time I’ve heard of this conspiracy theory. Also prior to the dolphins drafting a Wide Receiver I had stated that this would come back and bite the Dolphins for not trading out to get more draft picks. Florida State offensive Center who could play Tackle or Defense. Plus would have given us two offensive tackles or guards just trade out. But most wanted a W/R which would have been okay had the line not been neglected. Here we have Tannehill about to repeat 58 sack season?
Coyle must go
The defense will not be good until he is gone
Whoever made the decision to not hire Mathis should go
Most running plays this past weekend that the Broncos had, went behind Mathis who opened gaping holes for the running back
We have an anemic running game
There is no one in our OL that can push the defender out of the way
The guards are so bad that someone will always get through and knock our QB
We were not ready to loose Delmas we don’t have a adequate backup
Our season is lost, so clean house now, don’t wait, Coyle has no future with the Dolphins
Tannebaum was a big mistake for our team
We were much better off with Hickey and Aponte
Strart trading players – we have to get a middle linebacker a corner and a safety
On offense we need 2 guards a fullback and a LT
We don’t need Jennings
Can we trade Suh ??
Jimmy, I thought the same thing. I too feel that the players, especially the veterans have had enough of Philbin and collectively decided to seal his fate since Ross did not end of last season! I would be shocked if Coyle is kept, but who knows. If the team will play hard for Campbell, then we are already way ahead of the game. It would be great is he could become the next up & coming stud HC in the league. I don’t think the team can play any worse under him. The players did not believe in Philbinn and the game plans. If you continually start slow week in and week out, that’s coaching. Coyle now needs to go! I think it would hurt the morale of the team if he stayed. It’s obvious that the defensive players are not buying into his schemes.
