Is Miami Looking to Sign Tyron Smith?
Dolphins still need a lot of help on the offensive line
There have been a few news outlets that are reporting that the Miami Dolphins are showing some interest in former five time All Pro Offensive Tackle Tyron Smith. Smith is an older player and spent his first 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was at his best. Last season, Smith joined the New York Jets, and it was an injury riddled season. But, if Terron Armstead doesn’t return, maybe Tyron Smith would give veteran leaderships and an option in case of an injury… at the right price?
The Phins need to bolster this offensive line, so I love that they are at least kicking the tires on Smith.
Tyron Smith could be an excellent add at the right price
Tyron Smith feels sure does feel similar to Terron Armstead, who very well could be retiring this offseason. Both Smith and Armstead have earned 5 All Prop selections over their stellar careers. Unfortunately, both players also share a history of injuries and not playing full seasons. Since 2020, Smith has played in just 40 out of 84 games. But, if Miami is going to lose Armstead, Smith has the pedigree when healthy to still play well and even improve a blocking group that needs all the improvement they can get.
Whether or not Smith can stay healthy is a totally different question, but when he plays, he plays well. As recently as 2023, Smith was named to the All-Pro team. Despite only playing 10 games last year for the Jets, he has some good production and also served as a mentor to the younger offensive linemen on the team.
Considering that Smith is older and often injured, you can bet with the best pay per head that there’s a chance Miami can sign him for a bargain. It’s clear this offseason during free agency Miami isn’t splurging with their limited cap space, so it’s not a surprise this is the sort of player they are showing interest in. If Smith can make financial sense, I think he could be a good addition.
Phins need long term answers at offensive tackle
Either way it plays out with Smith and the Phins, it’s a one-year flier and not a long-term solution. Miami must find long term solutions on the offensive line, if they want to finally solve the long-term problem of poor blocking. Unfortunately, with Grier pulling the strings this type of philosophy on improving the offensive line is never truly going to get solved.
At least 2nd Year player Patrick Paul offers some hope that maybe we have one young player in the mix who can bring youthful talent to the Phins. Paul must succeed this season, or this unit will fall into a deep, black hole, deeper than the one we are in now.
It’s hard to imagine with Grier running the draft that the offensive line will a priority. Hopefully Grier shocks us and does the opposite of his usual, kicking the tires on a veteran like Smith and stocking the unit with injury prone and subpar players.
