Bizarre! Grier Doesn’t Mention Tua as a Leader!
Grier’s disaster of a pre-draft press conference went Twighlight Zone in so many ways
Detailing the many failures of Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier’s recent press conference would take a War and Peace sized article, so I’ll just focus one particular wacky moment. Grier struggled to name a leader beyond Zach Sieler and after the cringeworthy pause his first name was Tyreek Hill, which was shocking. Then he rattled off Waddle, Ingold, and Jackson… and never named Tua. The inability to instantly call out names was bad, but not naming your starting quarterback that you’ve invested a ton of money on was otherworldly shocking even just from a narrative standpoint.
Does Grier not think Tua is a leader? Is he losing his marbles? Was it a slight to his quarterback?
Who knows.
How does a GM miss his high-priced QB in naming leaders?
Whatever the reason for Tua being excluded, this was confounding when you consider Grier is supposedly the head of the organization and will need to think fast in this critical draft approaching. The you can bet with the best pay per head that this draft will have many zigs and zags and the trigger puller must be on his toes. Grier looked and sounded rattled, almost broken in his presser. In no way shape or form is this the type of shaky nature you want to lead the franchise in the upcoming draft, which the most critical moment of the offseason and the Phins future.
Even if you don’t think Tua is a leader and even if Grier doesn’t think he is one, not naming him is inexcusable from an optics / narrative standpoint. Naming Hill as leader #2 was all sorts of bonkers for so many reasons. Hill quit on Miami last season and beats women and children and he’s the first name to pop in your mind? Even if this was just a brainfart it’s inexcusable. Unfortunately, I can’t help but think this was something more and forgetfulness.
Is Grier the man to lead this draft?
If this was Grier’s only mental miss of the press conference, it would be one thing, but there were almost too many dropped balls to count. I don’t trust Grier to pull the trigger in a draft, but these last two press conferences leave me not trusting in his mental well-being. The Dolphins normal dysfunction appears to being stepping it up a notch this offseason.
We’ve had tons of draft picks, almost unprecedented about from 2020 through 2021 and we whiffed far more than we hit. So even though we have 10 draft selection in this draft, it’s not about the ammo, but how you shoot. A repeat of the 2020 and 2021 misfires would be devastating beyond comprehension.
Gosh, I hope we don’t repeat history. Go Phins!!!
