Phins Poised to Hire Jeff Hafley!

The Miami Dolphins’ coaching search is beginning to take a sharper shape, with Jeff Hafley — the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator — emerging as a serious frontrunner for the franchise’s next head coach. Sources around the league suggest Miami’s initial virtual interview with Hafley went extremely well, and he’s now being lined up for an in-person interview as soon as NFL rules allow teams to meet with coaches under contract.

At first glance, the idea of a defensive coordinator from Green Bay being the Dolphins’ choice might strike some fans as unconventional. After all, Miami has historically been associated with offensive-minded coaches, and many assumed the Dolphins might pursue bigger names with established head-coaching résumés. But digging into Hafley’s background and Miami’s current organizational context, the move starts to make a lot more sense.

Why It’s Not Crazy

You can bet with the best pay per head that a big part of Hafley’s appeal — at least to Miami’s front office — is his existing relationship with new Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. Sullivan, who spent more than two decades with the Packers, including as vice president of player personnel, is now running Miami’s football operations and likely has significant input on the head-coaching search. That shared history gives Hafley an edge over other candidates without similar connections.

Hafley also brings a solid defensive resume to the table. His Packers units have ranked respectably in key defensive metrics over the past two seasons, including middle-of-the-pack finishes in points and yards allowed. More importantly, his defenses have shown tangible improvement in situational performance — better third-down defense and a more aggressive turnover mindset.

Perhaps most importantly, Hafley isn’t a coach without head-coaching experience. Before joining Green Bay, he spent four seasons as head coach at Boston College, where he led the program through multiple bowl invitations in a challenging conference environment. That head coaching stint — even with mixed results — gives Miami at least some evidence he can run a whole football operation, not just a unit.

Why Some Fans Are Cautious

Still, there are valid concerns about the potential Hafley hire. First, his name recognition isn’t at the same level as other candidates reportedly in Miami’s mix — coaches like Kevin Stefanski or Robert Saleh — which raises questions about how he’d inspire a locker room or recruit top talent. Hafley’s Boston College record wasn’t dominant, and critics point out that success as a coordinator doesn’t always translate to success as a head coach.

Another issue is that Miami’s roster has notable question marks, especially on offense and at quarterback. Hiring a defensive-first coach when the team’s identity questions still loom leaves some wondering if this choice would prioritize the wrong half of the ball.

In the End If Hafley Is the One…Only Time Will Tell

Finally, Hafley is on many teams’ short lists this cycle, meaning Miami isn’t guaranteed to land him. So, even if they do, it will be a challenge to convince skeptics that the move signals forward momentum rather than a lateral workaround.

In the end, the Dolphins’ interest in Jeff Hafley isn’t as outlandish as it might’ve seemed a few weeks ago — but it’s not without its fair share of debate.

Bottom line: If Jon-Eric Sullivan is the right GM, then he’ll make the right choice for the Dolphins Head Coach.
