Some fans think there is no hope in fixing the Fins for 2016 because Ryan Tannehill is a bust. Some Fans think a “fan” must always have hope and Tannehill has been robbed with poor coaching, a poor system, and poor O-Line play. Then there are also those who are in the middle and not sure about either the QB or the Dolphins future. Despite whatever anyone believes, the bottom line is 2016 is the year of Ryan Tannehill. Fact is, whether cut or traded the cap hit for his departure is 11.5 million dollars…which means, he is staying till at least 2017 where the figure drops to 6.9 million. Miami Dolphins are destined to have 2016 be a sink or swim season based on his play.
I have found myself called a T-Hill lover when I defend him, and told I know nothing about football. And then when I critique his play, the other side calls me a hater and says I am not a Dolphin Fan and I should find another team. Frankly, I’m neither. And I hope the next coach and GM is neither as well. The problem is we lacked a pragmatic approach in dealing with Tannehill from the start.
Think of all the contradictions that have been applied to him since he has gotten here. Mobile QB given cement shoes by making him sit in the pocket. Green as a big time passer, but given little running game to help him make the transition. Given the burden and contract of an elite QB and then not allowed to call audibles. Told he needed to be tougher, but then having the players he practiced against to go easy on him so as not “to hurt his feelings”. Given a full WR core in a crucial year, but then given a depleted O-line. This is schizophrenic coaching and development. This is indisputable. What is also indisputable is no one knows how he would have developed if all things had been handled perfectly – I’ll say this though, it wouldn’t take the best sportsbooks in the world to see it couldn’t have been worse.
2016 IS the “Year Of Ryan Tannehill”, but it doesn’t need to mean elite or bust…and if we get a good coach and GM, it shouldn’t. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Brady both are having successful seasons. One is a piece of the puzzle and one is THE piece of the puzzle. For those who don’t remember, Brady started out as a piece of the puzzle and then was developed into THE piece. The new regime coming in needs to reboot Tannehill’s career to see if he can at the very least be A piece to the 2016 Dolphins, because 2017 is big time commitment for the long haul. And just as it would suck being stuck with high priced garbage, it would equally suck to see him go somewhere else and be an effective signal caller. Roughly a third of the leagues QB’s are exceptional and can carry a team. Roughly a third of the leagues QB’s are good and can matriculate teams to wins. And the last third of the leagues QB are missing something or figuring something out, and are good enough to be stop gaps till something better comes along. You can win with all three levels IF the team is built around a sober estimation of what their QB is. For Tannehill and what he is getting paid, only 1 out of 3 ain’t bad. But, a slight restructuring and 2 out of 3 ain’t bad either.
What is the first step to fixing a problem? Identify the Problem is the 1st step to solving the problem.

Cam actually could have, but he is freak!! I don’t blame T-Hill for ALOT, but to me, at the money he is making, he must be clutch and find ways to win when the opportunity presents itself. There have been many times where the team caused a play to fail, but he has made critical mistakes and not made the tough throw for the win as much as he needs to. Not saying he can’t or won’t, or won’t be produce better with a better system, cast and coaching, but it’s those big time moments when they have presented themselves and he hasn’t delivered that is the 18 million dollar question. There was one play early in Tannehill’s career that summed up what he was going to be. 2013 last game of season, Miami wins they are in the playoffs a 3rd and 8 at midfield mid forth quarter, Tannehills scrambles and slides (SLIDES) for a 7 yard gain. Miami punts, Jets score next possession, game over. Elite QBs know the game situation and dive for the first down, and Tanny’s strength is running. He just doesn’t have “it”.
I hope said trade happens, because if not we will be having this discussion next season all over again and again and again.
Hey Dunner thanks again for the comments- always good info and tone…A trade for 2016 is impossible, or I should say near impossible as a trade would but too much money on the books unless we did a 90’s Cowboys. Right now T-Hill is ranked #23 or so…I don’t see it outside the realm of possibility to give him the right system, coaches, talent around him and see him move up to #15 or so. #15 Would be better than we have had since Marino. Miami could work with that and could also do alot worse as they would have to acquire one (always a gamble) and then develop him. The reason 2016 is the year of T-hill isn’t he will magically become Brady, but rather the fortunes of Miami rest on him…not just 2016, but also beyond. I’d rather see him advance into good and not be elite, then go fish into a path fraught with disaster. As lemmus said kid is tough, no doubt, build a good D, good running game, let him make his throws (he has several where he excels) let him use his feet and feed off the run game with PA and a mobile platform. If during this process you can snag a QB later and develop him great. This to me is the model for success for T-Hill and miami’s future…could be wrong, but I could be right 🙂

Our cap situation is not as bad off as you make it out to be. Miami can set Suh’s salary hit for 2016 any where from 6 million to 28 million (will eventually have to pay up), and after Tanny repeats his performance again in 2016 Miami can finally wash their hands of him at no cost to the team after the 2016 season. So the cap situation is not that bad off. At least we have someone in the front office w some knowledge (Dawn Aponte).
We do need LBers, only 2 though, Jenkins can play. We only need 1 CB (top corner), Grimes and/or Lippett/McCain can cover opponents #2 WR. We will not know Parkers ceiling (which I believe will be super after Tanny departure) because of the QB position (again it was our front offices’ lack of knowledge to know that defense and O-Line was the need). We DO NEED 2 starting guards, one via free agency, 1 of the top 3 guards in the draft.
This team was at its best when we had team leaders; ala B.Marshall, Karlos Dansby. However; our leaders (Philbin/Ireland) ousted the “players” and brought in “goody to shoes” and crippled this franchise for a decade. Thanks again Ross!!!

I do disagree of T-Hill though, not that he will ever be Brady, but a good system and coach could unscrew up T-Hill and make him productive part of a team. And yeah, that would be a super draft and doesn’t happen, but drafts like Seattle has had where late rounders do very well are actually better due to low cap values and when you look at Seattle for like 2 or 3 years it was mind blowing what they did…doubt to see something like that again for sometime.

No, that’s not what I’m saying sir! Or else you could say Marino is trash for not getting a ring – and that is TRULY taboo sir! BUT, what I am saying is in a cap strapped league the quality of the money spent goes a long way towards victory. If Tanny plays as he has for 18 mill a year, then the team will suffer as a whole because 15% of you cap will be spent on decent play and that will restrict you from filling holes and getting more productive players on your squad because cash = talent outside of the draft. So you would need super drafts to compensate a contract that is unbreakable and offer less than it’s value. Second, teams win game despite what ESPN tells you. But, if you were to take the team you mention…the no names, purple people eaters and try and fit them in a cap strapped era it would be very difficult…THIS is why T-Hill needs to play up to the contract…and I’m not talking about when the play breaks down due to poor talent or poor coaching or screw ups, but when a clear play is offered in crucial situations and he fails to deliver. Now all QB’s fail to deliver at some point, BUT it’s the frequency that makes them leaders or not, elite or not. T-Hill could do alot better inthe proper system, with better talent, with better coaching, BUT clutch and tensing up in pressure situations or the expanding of abilities in said situation seems to be you have it or not and the hallmark of greatness. So to trade Brees for Tannehill, the Saints would have to swallow $10 million in dead money to do this trade. But they would save $20 million against the cap.

There was a tackle that we could have drafted in the seventh round as he fell from a top 5 pick and did not get drafted and we did not have the vision to invest a seventh round pick on him as insurance in case he was innocent and now he starts for Dallas as a free agent signee
That is poor judgement on Ross and Tannebaum (too damn political correct) not looking out for the team first
We also need 3 starting linebackers ( at least a great middle linebacker who can make the pro bowl) a safety (we only have one good safety) a fullback ( we don’t have any) a second tight end (Simms is no good) and two corners (Taylor is no good and should be cut) and these are only the starters that we desperately need in addition to at least three starting caliber offensive linemen and we need to somehow keep Vernon
With all due respect 2016 is a rebuilding year and it will take several years to acquire that talent and to top it off we will now have CAP problems because of Suh’s and Tannehill’s contracts
It will be a big disservice to the team to pay Miller and Wake big money to stay in a team that is doomed to finish in the bottom third of the NFL the next two or three years
We cannot compete against our own division much less beat them
Until Tannebaum is replaced we are in big Doo Doo
Imagine our top four draft picks last year are not even starters with our team
Our top three drafts are supposed to be pro bowlers every year (at least 2 pro bowl contenders) and solid players we can depend on
We were told Parker was the answer and how many passes has he caught ten all year and only one touchdown ??
Instead we got 4 non starter caliber players on our first 4 picks

We cut good players and replaced them with mediocre players

Will I continue to be a fan – yes but I am also realistic that we are now handicapped by the addition of Tannebaum to our front office and our (less than elite) coaching staff
How about the backups. We need good backups also.
We need at least 10 players that are good players to give Tannehill a chance to show he is a franchise caliber QB and I agree wether we want to or not he is going to be our QB in 2016
I just hope we finally fix our offensive line to give him a chance
With all due respect Ralph, you show me a team(s) that drafts 3 pro bowlers in with their top 3 picks in each of their drafts??? Don’t think to hard, cause there are none. If that were the case said team would make the super bowl every year. Heck even 2 pro bowlers w their top 3 picks. We should be getting a starter or 2 w each draft, not happening.
If you think Tannehill is the answer, regardless if he had Dallas’ O-Line or not, then you are as inept as Tanabaum. So we can have a top 5 O-Line and still get the same results because of our QB position. Until we move on from Tanny the rest is irrelevant. Sad thing is the players/team mates know it as well.
Our cap situation is not as bad off as you make it out to be. Miami can set Suh’s salary hit for 2016 any where from 6 million to 28 million (will eventually have to pay up), and after Tanny repeats his performance again in 2016 Miami can finally wash their hands of him at no cost to the team after the 2016 season. So the cap situation is not that bad off. At least we have someone in the front office w some knowledge (Dawn Aponte).
We do need LBers, only 2 though, Jenkins can play. We only need 1 CB (top corner), Grimes and/or Lippett/McCain can cover opponents #2 WR. We will not know Parkers ceiling (which I believe will be super after Tanny departure) because of the QB position (again it was our front offices’ lack of knowledge to know that defense and O-Line was the need). We DO NEED 2 starting guards, one via free agency, 1 of the top 3 guards in the draft.
This team was at its best when we had team leaders; ala B.Marshall, Karlos Dansby. However; our leaders (Philbin/Ireland) ousted the “players” and brought in “goody to shoes” and crippled this franchise for a decade. Thanks again Ross!!!
Hey Dunner, I’ll check again, but from what I read we are already over the cap for 2016 and Suh is a near mandatory restructure. Maybe I miss remembered…it happens. I do disagree of T-Hill though, not that he will ever be Brady, but a good system and coach could unscrew up T-Hill and make him productive part of a team. And yeah, that would be a super draft and doesn’t happen, but drafts like Seattle has had where late rounders do very well are actually better due to low cap values and when you look at Seattle for like 2 or 3 years it was mind blowing what they did…doubt to see something like that again for sometime.
What you are saying is every qb that doesn’t win sucks. Dallas hasn’t won without Romo so everyone else flat out sucks. Tarkenton must have sucked all those years he played for the giants and elway only became good at the end of his career. Marino sucked after his one superbowl appearance and they lost so he sucked. The perfect team was lead with 33 receptions by Paul Warfield 33! but Morral and Griese were elite qbs because their team never lost. Shut up
No, that’s not what I’m saying sir! Or else you could say Marino is trash for not getting a ring – and that is TRULY taboo sir! BUT, what I am saying is in a cap strapped league the quality of the money spent goes a long way towards victory. If Tanny plays as he has for 18 mill a year, then the team will suffer as a whole because 15% of you cap will be spent on decent play and that will restrict you from filling holes and getting more productive players on your squad because cash = talent outside of the draft. So you would need super drafts to compensate a contract that is unbreakable and offer less than it’s value. Second, teams win game despite what ESPN tells you. But, if you were to take the team you mention…the no names, purple people eaters and try and fit them in a cap strapped era it would be very difficult…THIS is why T-Hill needs to play up to the contract…and I’m not talking about when the play breaks down due to poor talent or poor coaching or screw ups, but when a clear play is offered in crucial situations and he fails to deliver. Now all QB’s fail to deliver at some point, BUT it’s the frequency that makes them leaders or not, elite or not. T-Hill could do alot better inthe proper system, with better talent, with better coaching, BUT clutch and tensing up in pressure situations or the expanding of abilities in said situation seems to be you have it or not and the hallmark of greatness. I AM NOT saying he doesn’t have it, but rather he hasn’t displayed it nearly enough to warrent the current contract of 18 mill a year starting in 2017. I couldn’t agree more with everything you said!! But we need two TE’s can’t pay Cameron 9 million when he is only like 1.35 million against the cap if cut!! Also cant pay Grimes, needs to be traded so you can add to the laundry list of needs!!
Yeah, Albert…lots and lots of needs. Still not sure about Cameron. He started out very hot and then cooled off quickly. Could be lot of reasons going into why is isn’t performing. T-Hill might not have the time for those seam routs…not sure. Grimes has to go…trade or cut. I’d like to keep him as a #2 but near 10 mill is killer for the cap.
Admin, After watching the Tanny debocle (not entirely Tanny, Guards are worst ever) I lloked into the Tanny trade deal a little more.
A Tanny trade could be possible, but in most cases only for a player to off set the dead $ hit.
Per Miami Hearld: Drew Brees in 2016 will be in the final year of a deal that must pay him $19.75 million and cost $30 million against the cap. So to trade Brees for Tannehill, the Saints would have to swallow $10 million in dead money to do this trade. But they would save $20 million against the cap.
This trade would save them about $9 million in cap space. It works for their cap.
The Dolphins would save $2.4 million by dealing Tannehill in cap space, although they would have to carry $9.2 million in dead money.
If Breese would restructure for say 3 years, then his cap hit could be as low as 3.4 million in’16, thats it, all said and done and we move on.
