The Mike Pouncey Contract

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - SEPTEMBER 23: Center Mike Pouncey #51 of the Miami Dolphins plays against the New York Jets at Sun Life Stadium on September 23, 2012 in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Jets defeated the Dolphins 23-20 in overtime. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images)

The new contract that Mike Pouncey signed in April made him one of the highest paid centers in the league at 10 million dollars with 22 million guaranteed. His play since the signing of the contact hasn’t warranted such a kings ransom. I’m not saying his play has been terrible, it hasn’t been, but it isn’t elite either. Simply, at least to this point, Pouncey’s contract is another contract that doesn’t jive with a pay / performance imbalance. The secondary draw back is that along with Suh and Tannenhill,  he is contractual cemented to the Dolphins for 2016 and the next regime must accept them as pieces of the puzzle.

Since his excellent 2013 campaign which ended in injury, and the following year where he was rushed back from serious hip surgery and slotted at guard by Philbin, Pouncey’s play at center has diminished. Despite his Pro Bowl nomination, it doesn’t take the best sportsbooks in the world to see this was a  down season for him with several badly missed snaps and very little domination in the full range of a center’s skill set. He still displayed very good ability to get to the second level and work in space, but his lack of functional strength at the point of attack was even more on display in Campbell’s running system. All in all, if his play continues at this level Miami will have a pretty good player they are paying a great amount of money to.

When you combine Pouncey’s pay / performance ratio and add it to Tannenhill’s along with Albert, who is worth the coin, but injury prone, you have a severe cap in balance on offense. Now to hold back T-Hill fans fury,  yes it isn’t all his fault as many factors are involved. BUT his level of pay is for a top 10 QB and anything short, for whatever the reason, is a near crippling waste of funds. This offensive cap imbalance could play heavily in the signing or not signing of Miller, who as a free agent is expected to be over paid – the question is how much over.

The last issue with Pouncey being locked in is he’s a full tilt finesse player with second level and pass protection skills and has not shown that he suited for physical style football. Prospective coaches and GM’s may have this as a negative consideration depending on their flavor of offensive style and may have Miami pigeon holed into finesse type team based on their centers play. Bottom line coming off a sever injury, playing out of position, and looking somewhat diminished was the contract given a wise move? Maybe 2016 he will rebound – he needs too for the sake of the cap. If not it could be another hole filled with an overpriced plug.

Fins should explore all options to off load high salary under achievers including Pouncey.
This OL is designed under a different scheme and has been a resounding failure.
Trade possibilities w Pouncey should be explored sooner vs later. Plenty of good C can be had in middle rounds w player types that are more road grader types bs finesse.

This draft is a glaring opportunity for find to correct errors and fill some holes.
Trading down multiple times to pick up additional 1st,2nd,3rd round picks will be critical.
And I’d consider a QB in 5th if someone w upside and w prototypical form was there.

Yeah, Freak. Couldn’t agree more Pouncey and most assets needs to be shipped out. Real front offices find linemen in middle rounds and don’t need to swing and fail 50% like Miami to find them. We need a Jimmy Johnson style make over.

Hello Dolfans Jimmy, Ralp, Lemmus and Admin

Lets take it from the DRAFT!

    Offensive Linemen Priority one:

We can project that the Dolphins draft may resemble this list below.

1st round ———-7th picked Ronnie Stanley OT
2nd round ———-39th picked Cody White Hair Kansas State OG
3rd round———–71st picked Nick Martin Center
    4th round———–103th picked Alex Collins Arkansa R/B
5th round———–135th picked Kevin Hogan QB Stanford Q/B
6th round———–166th picked Travis Feeney OLB Washington OLB
7th round———–193th picked Taveze Calhoun Missippi State CB
or 191st picked Sean Davis Marryland FS

BUT! (Top two OT Tunsil Ole Mis and Standley Notre Dame will be gone off the board maybe by pick 6 or 7.

So Whats the best Plan ???

Just trade out of the 1st picked for more picks. History shows that the Dolphins have failed in selecting high draft picks. Miami Dolphins could trade that spot for more picks. Maybe a second this year, a 1st next year and a 2nd the 3rd year? or Better! “Time for Management to Shine”.

Miami Could have this option: 1st Round picked you may have Paxton Lynch QB on the Board? PASS or TAKE or trade out for more picks?

    Meant Jenkins
    Stupid autocorrect

je min’s is ok but definitely not elite
I see him as a player we can keep for now because of all the other holes we have to fill
Maybe in time he can develop into a better linebacker
We need a good safety next to jones
Right now jones is the only safety who is good on our team
    The other safeties stink
We need to pick up another good safety
    Probably in free agency
We also need to pick up at least one linebacker in free agency a run stopper because we will only be able to draft one since we need 2 corners at least and 2 guards in this draft plus another running back
We should have at least 3 compensatory picks for the free agents we lost in 2015
    That gives us 10 picks
It’s so important to get starters not backups with at least our top 4 picks maybe 5 if we have a good draft
Very concerned that Tannebaum will meddle and not give hickey his picks
Tannebaum is a very bad judge of players

  • Lemmus

…I agree that Pouncy didn’t play at his best this year, other than Landry, who did?

…we need to fix the bad players first and ignore the mediocre ones for the time being until we have an effective FO and HC in place

…OL …Pouncy and James are the only keepers …some others will be kept as backup and developed but there are three gaping holes that need fixing before anything else …Albert is very good when hes healthy but when we have to use Fox or Thomas to replace him so often, hes NOT worth the money …rather have a good starter with a decent backup at LT …neither of which we currently have

…RB …Ajayi had a good rookie season, not great, but enough that losing Miller wouldn’t be a disaster …save the cap money, replace Miller with a mid round pick

…LB …there has been a constant rollover at the position with no results …even with FA pro-bowlers, the results have sucked …new coach needed …keep Msi, everything else is open

…CB …two many small guys that can’t play with the tall receivers …1st or 2nd round pick depending on who is available vs OL pick …then 2 late picks

…but the real sinkhole is the FO …the OL draft was a disaster …Tannenbum definitely needs to go

    • admin

Agree on everything Lemmus, except LB and Jenkins…alittle bit nicked up, but young and could overcome his injury bug to be a good WLB.

  • Ralph

We already have too many overpaid players
    Suh, pouncy, Tannehill
We don’t need to overpay another one
Miller is not a top 10 running back
Probably a top 30 maybe at best
So the offer should be commensurate
If he doesn’t accept it let him go
    Same with Vernon
So this only compounds our dilemma this coming draft and also we are constraining our ability to pick up good free agents to fill starting roles that we desperately need to replace with good players not mediocre to bad players
Cut Taylor save money he is another Ireland bust cut Dallas another Ireland bust rated the absolute worst Guard in the NFL

    • admin

Pretty much exactly as I see it Ralph…Miller worries me because he is a back, nicked up alot, and had to be talked into running hard. And don’t forget Grimes and his wife..
