Can Fins Dominate H.C. Search Like They Did The Pats?

The Dolphins at least ended the season on a high note. By beating the New England Patriots, who actually needed the victory in order to secure the number one seed in the AFC, the Dolphins shocked the Patriots with a smothering defense. The victory was a good dose of revenge as it caused the Patriots to drop down to the number two seed in the AFC. Tannehill and the offense actually played a pretty good game, however it was too little too late. In addition, Parker had another big game, and finished the season just shy of 500 receiving yards and a whopping 19 yards per catch average, which is something that he can build on for next season.

Quickly after Sunday’s game, the Dolphins have been actively contacting their potential candidates for their next head coach. Below is a small list of coaches that Miami has interest in, and in the coming days there will most likely be more names added to this list. I hope that they hit their coaching search on all cylinders the way they hit the Patriots.

Adam Gase Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator

Teryl Austin Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator

Mike Shanahan Former Washington and Denver Broncos Head Coach

Todd Haley Pittsburgh Offensive Coordinator

Josh McDaniels New England Patriots Offensive Coordinator

Matt Patricia New England Defensive Coordinator

Anthony Lynn New England Assistant Head Coach

Doug Marrone Former Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills

Dan Campbell Miami Dolphins Interim Head Coach

Apparently the Dolphins have already had a clandestine first interview with Mike Shanahan and are now scheduling a second interview with him. Most fans would agree that Shanahan is one of the more flashy names on the list because he has won two Super Bowls. However, that was many, many years ago with the Broncos when they had the most dirty cut blocking system ever, and his last tenure in Washington ended with him being fired. There is chatter out there that Shanahan did not want to draft Robert Griffen III and actually favored drafting Tannehill instead of Griffin, but was vetoed by upper management. That would make sense in why he would want to go to Miami. However, I believe he is way past his prime, and would not be the best option for the Dolphins future head coach.

Most sports gambling fans would agree that the most intriguing names on this list are the three that are coaching for the Patriots. The Patriots are the creme of the crop of this century in regards to an NFL football team, and any team in the league would love to have the success they have had for as long as they have had. Clearly anyone learning under Bill Belichick is going to be learning from one of the best football coaches that has ever coached in this league. If any of these coaches would be willing to coach for a division rival, then the Dolphins would automatically have a inside track into the inner workings of how to beat the Patriots. However since none of the Pats personnel has a scheduled interview it appears their loyalty may prevent them from coming to Miami.  Which of these coaches does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans prefer?

I am afraid that Tannebaum is just looking for a yes man like he did with the GM position

Let’s hope not because that would probably exclude Shannahan and Coughlin

  • I did not see any mention of Hue Jackson, would love to see what he could do with THill, This would be his second stint as a HC, He deserves the chance and if we don’t move on him quick he will be gone.

Jackson has an interview lined up for this Sunday w Miami. That is if a head coach isn’t already in place by then (Gase).

Another coach fired last night (Smith, Bucs). The list gets bigger by the day, meaning Miami’s window of opportunity is getting smaller by the minute. Whoever Miami has in mind (if anyone at this point) they must act quickly. In order for a HC to fill his staff w the personal he admires, they must be available, the sooner the hire, the better. Don’t get me wrong, Miami should not hire just to hire, they must have 2 or 3 guys in mind, but they need to act swiftly. For me it should be a veteran HC, we have not had any luck w newbie HCs and Mr.Ross need’s to allow the new HC the power of the 53 man roster. I understand the financial implications of some players that may or mat not be feasible. There is no need for Tannebaum to have that portion of control, everything else, OK (I guess)! Like Parcells says “If I’m going to be asked to cook the meal, I’d like to be able to pick the groceries”. How true is that, and until Miami relinquishes that total control to the HC, we will be going through this again in a few years. Hey, but we will have a shinny new renovated stadium w shade and all!!!

I guess it’s too much to expect this owner to invite Tom Caughlin in for an interview. He is a proven winner and a hell of a person, so why isn’t his name on the list?

I read this article out of the Bleacher Report today.

He’ll be 70 next season, an age that might not be as much of a deterrent as it would have a decade ago.

It’s unclear if the Dolphins are interested in Coughlin although an interview would be convenient while team officials are in New York.

Dolphins Hall-of-Fame fullback Larry Csonka wrote on his blog Tuesday that hiring Coughlin would be “a golden opportunity” — but Csonka was concerned that Coughlin wouldn’t have enough personnel control in Miami. Csonka and Coughlin were teammates at Syracuse and Coughlin started his coaching career there.

Dolphins head executive Mike Tannenbaum said the new coach will have personnel input. How much is unknown.

Tbone, Coughlin is the type of coach that would receive the job if he wanted without a formal interview.

What about Mike Smith? Atlanta falcons old coach? I thought I heard something about him being interviewed by Miami?

  • Ralph

    What about Mike Shula
    Offensive coach Carolina Panthers
The best off se in the NFL
Plus Can we let a Shula be a coach anywhere else?

    • Lemmus

…I’ve said it before …doesn’t matter a whit how good Shula might be …he would be a political/media nightmare for Tannenbaum …ergo, I’d be very surprised if he’s even interviewed by the fins …one more reason the Tannenbaum bit sucks

…I’d think 49ers or Eagles if he goes anywhere at all

  • Lemmus

…Shanahan is the only one on that list with a winning record as HC …no idea what he thought of Tannehill but there was a lot of smoke at the time that he didn’t think much of RG …on which he’s been proven right …in Denver his SBs came with Elway as his QB …but he added a run game that made Elway much more effective …we could do a lot worse than a proven HC with a record of developing mid round drafts into pro-bowlers …his real problem in Wash was the owner kept putting his fingers in the pie, eg RG …you have to believe that he isn’t going to come here if he faces the same problem with Ross/Tannenbaum …so yeah, I’d be happy with him for that reason alone.

…and I don’t want to hear that he’s over the hill at 63 for christ’s sake …that’s middle age now a days you punks 🙂

Not over the hill, but since they made rules to kill his cut blocks of crippling death his runnning came to earth and so did he…he seems best so far as his QB system would be perfect of T-Hill, but still not overly impressed, Lemmus.

…Urban Meyer isn’t going anywhere until his kids finish HS …he publicly pledged that to his family after putting them through the move from Florida …if his word to his family isn’t any good, I wouldn’t want him anyway
