Super Bowl Quarterbacks

It was only a few months ago when the Dolphins had an off-season practice with the Carolina Panthers, and there were reports that Carolina was asking the Dolphins to turn down the gas on defense because our pass rush was too dominant for the Panthers offensive line. Fast forward to Super Bowl 50, the Panthers were just one game away from having an undefeated regular season, rolled there way through the playoffs, and made it to the Super Bowl. What is even a greater stick in the eye is that during that off-season joint practice, the Panthers lost there stud wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin for the entire season.

After those late summer practices, many Dolphins players and Miami Dolphins News fans were feeling pretty good that the team that was going to make a real playoff run. However, its painfully obvious now that the Panthers are the real deal, and even if they do not win the Super Bowl this season, they clearly look like a team that is built to be in the Championship picture for many years to come. The best pay per head reviews know the simple reason for it, Panthers have probably the best young QB in the league in Cam Newton.

Teams win championships – defense especially. However, the QB position is probably the most important position in all of the sports since now the NFL has made such a strong emphasis on the passing game. Look at the list of the last 12 Super Bowl match-ups and you’ll see a similar caliber of Quarterbacks that started those games. In the last 12 Super Bowls, there has only been one Super Bowl that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Ben Roethlisberger did not represent the starting QB for the AFC Conference, which was in 2013 when Joe Flacco led the Ravens to victory. Brady, Manning, and Roethlisberger are each going to be first ballot hall of fame QB’s as well, so it truly shows that in this day in age you need an elite QB if you want to win a championship.

Just look at this year’s match-up, Peyton Manning against Cam Newton. Manning may be playing in his last game, and he has one of the most decorated careers of any QB to ever play the game. Cam Newton is still a very young QB, having only played in 5 NFL seasons, but he has already proven himself as probably one of the best dual-threat QB’s to ever play the game. He will most likely easily win the 2015 NFL season MVP, and if he does lead the Panthers to victory in Super Bowl 50 this Sunday, then he will probably win the Super Bowl MVP as well. This game is a true changing of the guard with the veteran Manning passing the torch to the new era Cam Newton.

This leads to the multimillion-dollar question of whether Ryan Tannehill has skills and the ability to ever led the Dolphins to a Super Bowl? Tannehill does check a lot of boxes of what you want in a QB, however, he has zero playoff experience, rarely taken over a game and guided his team to victory. Tannehill will be entering his 5th season next year with his third different offensive coordinator – which is a stumbling block onto itself. Miami needs to straighten out their dysfunction and fill the talent chasm on the offensive line if Tannehill is to have a chance at the big strides he needs to make next season. If all holes are filled and he has another down year, Miami will most likely be searching for another young QB to try to become the next Peyton Manning or Cam Newton. But, if he does make those strides, Miami will have it’s the best shot at reaching a championship since Dan Marino.

    Yelp!

I agree Defense wins games, I agree that the QB must win big games, I agree that the offensive line needs rebuilding.
(There is no ILB in 1st round) (Carson Wentz will be off board at 8th pick) (Mid to late 1st rounder’s there are 3 linemen)
    he is coming off injury

My questioned about the offensive line is, Who is responsible for their improvement?, Who is responsible for their conditioning etc.
    a. Our offensive line lacks durability players.
    b. Failing to advance into a solid starter or a solid back up.

Possible Answer: We all agree that it is easier to run the ball than passing. The Dolphins have for years focus on passing 90% of the time this has halted the Fins offensive line cohesion & endurance development. Busted pass plays stop the development of the offensive line.
Remedy: Learn how to run a balance offense. ( You have a chance to trade back for Ezekiel Elliot in the 1st or Alex Collins 3rd round
I contend that the Miami Dolphins have talent that was never properly coach to winning. Everything is focus on Tannehill instead of the team development. Coach to improve the strength of the offensive line run the ball with balance.

    Don’t expect agreement!

Valid points! However, there is a 1st round ILBer that would fit nicely behind Suh = Reggie Ragland. He will probably go in the mid (12-20) first round, I would be all for trading back to pick up another second and third or forth round pick(s) and grabbing Reggie. And with our 2 second round picks grabbing Cody Whitehair and Joshua Garnett (guards). That would (should) take care of our guard problem for the next decade on the cheap for 5 years. Problems w that is we would be neglecting our defense and our need for explosive/athletic OLBers/DE. Yea, sure you can draft those positions in the third or later, but those players are projects and not day one starters. Also, if we were to wait till the draft to address the guard positions and you don’t get 2 day 1 starters we are right back where we were in ’15.
I am looking for Myles Jack at #8, but if a scenario such as that (or same scenario and grad Noah Spence) unfolds wouldn’t be disappointed.

While I agree that QB is the most important single position on a football team, I do believe a top ranked defense can overcome average QB play. The Broncos were going to beat Carolina regardless if it were Manning or Brock Osweiler playing QB (average QB play at best), and Denver’s top ranked defense beat arguably the best offensive football team/QB in Brady and the Pats to get there. Where as the top QB (Brady) could not overcome even a average defense.
I know offenses are fun and sells tickets, but the bottom line is and always has been, DEFENSES wins, wins in the regular season and even shows more value in the playoffs and obviously the Super Bowl should they get there.
It is time to assemble an athletic, young second level (LBers). An area that Miami has been without for far to long. And, with the 8th overall pick, they could get themselves a game changer, a building block, a BIG piece to the puzzle.

You nailed it Dunner…Cam has little to no short game and his play diagnosis is a bit iffy.

…sigh, shakes head…here we go again …draft a LB! …CB! …even DE! …some still want a QB despite the facts staring them in the face

…its a TEAM sport guys …yes, no question that the Bronco’s defense was dominant …but their offense had to stay on the field long enough to give that defense a breather …and score when the opportunities presented themselves

…the fins have value players at EVERY POSITION except OL …if not current starters, they are on the roster …yet no one seems to be able to see through the rah-rah haze to the simple truth

…we have ONE mid-ranked starter on the OL who doesn’t go down injured like clockwork every freakin’ season …ZERO guards at either position that are pro quality backups, much less starters …a center that has had much better years and is now injury prone with a wanna-be backup rookie that didn’t flash despite many snaps …our LT has an ambulance on standby and ZERO backup prospects

…Tannehill has been sacked/hurried far more than any other QB in the NFL and yet he still has top ten stats in most categories …yet all I see is a constant drumbeat to draft a new QB and ignore the OL …draft a LB and ignore the OL …draft a CB and ignore the OL …we can get a starting OL in the later rounds …etc etc ad infinitum

…imnsho, it’s all bs …take multiple OL as high as we can that match our ratings for them …not every 1/2 round draftee makes it to start …you need multiple picks to have a high probability of finding a true starter …and in our case, even decent backups

…as for QBs, we have a 2nd string bu QB that barely saw the field the last 3 years but is costing us 5+mil in cap space …Tannehill is demonstrably the toughest QB in the league and it isn’t even close …so dump the high cost bench warmer and promote the 3rd string to warm the bench …that 5mil would go a long way toward solving our cap problems …might even get us a decent FA OL

Hey, Lemmus what do you think of Osemele in FA and whitehair in the draft? Matt Moore is around the 34th highest paid QB in the league…he is gone!

    Jimmy

    Thats just it!

Checking the boxes dont win championships. The dolphins for what ever the reason find excuse after excuse for Tannehill and yet to make a playoffs yet.

Base on the Dolphins scheduled the last 5 years Any Average QB would have had the Dolphins in the playoffs at least once? Every body is talking about a run for the play offs and the Dolphins yet to prove that they can beat teams under 500 just to get in the play offs.

Maybe the Dolphins should just focus on flying drone’s in the stadium thats more exciting?

Yup…Defense wins championships. But, as a single position QB is the most crucial. Teams win championships…Couldn’t believe how Cam was so unsuper …during and after the Cam. I had hoped he had grown up…

  • Dunner

Defense wins!!! LBers were the difference
