It was somewhat stunning news from NFL.Com that Miami Dolphins were in “deep” trade talks with the Eagles for one of Chip Kelly’s premier acquisitions!
Byron Maxwell, the former Seahawk was paid like a superstar, but last season struggled in Chip Kelly’s defense. Mike Tannenbaum seems to find value in Maxwell in the trade as a sort of reclamation project. Maxwell would not be due the signing bonus and is past his highest paid year and would make $8 mill this season and 10.5 next with a $3mil signing bonus, so while cheaper, there is still risk involved.
It doesn’t take the best sportsbooks in the world to bet that Miami believes Vance Joseph can get more out of Maxwell and help Miami’s thin secondary. Maxwell has talent and displayed it in Seattle. But the question is, was it Seattle that made Maxwell appear or is he legitimate talent miss used in Philadelphia? This “quick” trade could also mean that Brent Grimes becomes expendable. While the trade isn’t finalized, if it’s reached this point it should be simply a matter of time before Miami has a new CB in town!
We don’t know the perameters of the trade yet. We don’t know if Maxwell restructured. We won’t know till tomorrow @ 4. We didn’t break the bank to sign Maxwell, even if he doesn’t restructure. After this season, we could let him go at a minimal cost. All in all, good deal for both parties. Basically a swap for Grimes, plus a little extra $. Gase is getting a clean slate for the most part, none of Ireland’s/Hickey’s baggage. I like their thinking.
We don’t know how Maxwell will perform here, could be like he did in Seattle. Or, he could produce like he did or didn’t in Philly. Which we then let him go.
I think there was pressure to get rid of Grimes. They will cut him and replace him with Maxwell. The article you posted was good, but left out some details. The guaranteed money will let him be cut next season with a 3 million dollar hit. You can see if he can be rebound, dump Grimes, save a mill and fill a LB spot. Now if it’s some 6’s and 7’s over a couple of years, I am not THAT unhappy. But, if it’s more than that and at least on players doesn’t go back to form then we lose – not big time as the article makes it sound. Both can be moved on next season and you get this season to see if you hit the homerun. If both pan out, it’s genius. If one pans out you win. If none pan out , the level of jackass will be determined by the picks lost.

Darrelle Revis has agreed to a six-year, $96 million contract as part of Sunday’s trade that sends the cornerback from the New York Jets to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Yahoo! Sports has learned. Tampa Bay, which didn’t include any guaranteed money in Revis’ contract, sent its 2013 first-round draft pick (No. 13 overall) and a conditional 2014 pick that could become a third- or fourth-rounder.
Revis flew a private jet Sunday morning to fly to Tampa Bay for an official physical, although the Buccaneers’ medical staff was already aware of the results of an MRI exam Revis took April 15 when he returned to the Jets’ offseason program.

This is a large gamble on these two players. After reading the article I just posted The Cornerback is questionable and the Line backer has been injured two years. It could work but a serious gamble. Could this be holes in a five gallon can we are trying to used? Be careful! I would not make this deal and Grimes would be the better bargain. Your starting Cornerback cannot have performance questioned. Along with your starting linebacker cannot be on the side lines. Miami Dolphins cannot enter the 2016 season with a questionable Cornerback and linebacker. Corner back is a skilled position and Maxwell he was ranked about 35th best corner in the NFL last Season is this the best we can do?
Typically, if a contract for a big signing is so obviously bad that the team that gave it out is already attempting to trade it after just one year, there usually is not a market for that player’s services elsewhere, and the team is stuck with a big mistake of a deal. But because the Dolphins are run by Mike Tannenbaum, whose M.O. is to get big names on big deals and worry about the rest later, there’s apparently a market. And that is also fairly crazy, even accounting for the fact that not all of the remaining money on the deal would go on Miami’s books because some would accelerate onto Philly’s.
I don’t believe these 2 acquisitions mean we are playoff bound. I do think the moves are youth movements to grow w Gase, the offense is there, now a defensive lift.
He only allowed 1 touchdown all last season…it COULD end up being a good trade for Miami. It depends on what they gave up and whether he ends up a stop gap or more. Grimes might be gone now though….

I believe the Fins see Maxwell as at least on par w Grimes but much younger and could blossom w correct tutelage (Joseph). So the move is actually a smart move in a few different ways. Grimes needs to go because Mika will not stop, he will be gone next season, his skills have depreciated a bit and he struggles with tall receivers. I like him, but to many negatives if you can get a reasonable substitute.
