Vance Joseph: Hints Of A Very Good Hire

Vance Joseph

Vance Joseph is a rookie defensive coordinator, but he might just end up a real gem once polished.

Vance Joseph and Adam Gase are rookies, but BOTH are displaying good signs.

A lot of Focus has been on Adam Gase‘s hire – and rightly so. But, Vance Joseph is demonstrating just as many good indicators, in this early stage, that he will be a tremendous hire for the Miami Dolphins.

Early on Phinsnews, after a weebit of pining over Dan Campbell‘s departure, felt that Gase’s hire had the appearance of a very good move (like many fans), and that his demeanor was a strong indicator that this was a positive direction for Miami: article here.

But, in the flurry of news at the time, Vance Joseph didn’t get his just due, and only received a cursory consideration on this blog. Phinsnews was a tad slow to realize that Joseph might not just be a good hire, but a great one. We will make an attempt to rectify that error.

Now, let me say this, not even the best at football gambling can bet that both Gase and / or Joseph won’t flop – the reality is they can. But, given the evidence of what we currently have to make a judgement based on, all the signs are all pointing up.

Over the last several months, I have watched several pressers by Joseph, did my research (at a slightly greater than cursory level), considered what he has to offer; BUT, after reading the article and especilly after watching the video insert of Joseph Has Made An Immediate Impression by Alain Poupart ( link here ) it all clicked. Now, I still need to see him perform game-day, but one lesson that was driven home during Philbin’s time in Miami is that demeanor and personality are strong indicators as to the character of a man and has a definite correlation to his performance as a coach.

No-duh, right? “Fandom” can be blinding even in obvious situations – am I alone?

Vance Joseph and Adam Gase seem to be cut from the same clothe.

What struck me in the video of Poupart’s article was how much Joseph’s intelligence, seeming honesty, and straight shooter style made me like him – and if I were an NFL player, play for him. From all the reports, players feel the same way about Joseph. But, added to that they almost always remark on his intelligence and knowledge of the game.

We expected the same from Joe Philbin.

But, Philbin had the personality of a dirty sponge – repulsive.

Gase and Joseph possess all that Philbin was supposed to have in the brains department, but they also have everything he was lacking: Strength of personality and charisma…a.k.a leadership skills.

An added bonus is that Joseph isn’t an uber geek like Gase and has played football at the highest level as a NFL corner. He is a perfect compliment to Gase.

Both Gase and Joseph seemed to be cut from the same cloth: unflappable stares, strong personalities but not coarse, honest in evaluations, intelligent, able to delegate, attention to detail and well liked (so far) by media and players. At this point of the evaluation cycle you can only hope and smile that this trend will continue. Go Fins!!!

…well I do have my senior moments now and then, so maybe I’m confusing you ‘n Omar

…don’t see all the foofraw over Brady missing a game …recollect Bellicheat went 11-5 without him using a backup QB no one else has been able to make a winner of since …its Bellicheat makes the Pats and they will be tough at home no matter who is behind center

…I’d be ok with 0-5 or 2-3 to start …takes time to tune an engine …its finishing 5-0 that would make the season for me …and I’m somewhat hopeful of seeing that, I am 🙂

Well, you aren’t old and bitter, at least!! 🙂 That might be the senility balancing you out…I find it’s that way with me. I think Brady being out will be a big deal, maybe not enough for a win for Miami, of course if they are a meh team. If they win, then it will show me that they could be a quality team not to be taken lightly. Please don’t confuse me, or for that matter Jimmy, for Omar – now that guy is bitter and young!!!! I still read his stuff now and then because of his connections with players, but he has rubbed me the wrong way for a few years. 5-0 to finish the season would be the bees knees!!!

…so, uh, like, you like the guy?

…but will you still like him when we’re 0-5?

…’cause I seem to remember you puttin’ the “like” on Philbin when he was 0-0 too ?

ohhh no, sir…not me!!! Soon as he went all gum crazy on the carpet with the players, I was skating on thin ice in my belief of him. I was full blown tearing him in 2014…maybe Jimmy…but, hell, no not me!!!! I think I even wrote some competing articles on his opinion as M.J. BUT, will you tip your hat to me if he / they turn out to be good?! 😉 They won’t be 0-5…2-3 maybe.

W1 Seattle = likely a loss that’s nothing to cry over.
W2 Pats with no Brady at NE = could be a loss, but shouldn’t be, it will determine how good they’ll be
      W3 Browns Home = win
W4 Cincy = tough game likely a loss unless they prove in the NE game to be more than we expect
W5 = Titans Home = win they are better this year and they killed them last year

worst case (beyond nightmare time) 2-3, fair chance at 3-2, miracle 4-1

I haven’t drank cool aid in some time.
