This experiment has a lot of variables: protection issues, no run game, and an unending list of OC’s.

Has the experiment of WR turned QB, turned Dolphins cornerstone failed?

The Miami Dolphins experiment of Wide Receiver turned Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has continued with new coaches, a new scheme and some new players; but, it’s been the same old Dolphins results: lots of losing.

Yes, the Defense is still getting run over. And yes, the offense still fails to protect and open holes consistently, much less score many points. The net result of these factors with Tannehill as the face of the franchise is the 2016 Dolphins are piling up losses nearly as fast as their 2007 debacle.

But, remove all these surrounding negative factors for just a moment and focus on this simple question: would Tannehill be a 20 million dollar QB and the cornerstone of the franchise if all these things get fixed?!

At this point it appears the answer is not likely. So, for me, the Tannehill experiment is now all but over.

I have actually been a Tannehill supporter and felt he had the tools to make it in this league. However, no one can be a truly successful QB in the NFL if they stand in the pocket like a statue and stare down receivers.

Again, his offensive line is not doing him any favors, but he seemingly can’t feel pressure unless it is smacking him in the face.  And yes there are times he has no chance, but when he does have the opportunity, he needs to step up or roll-out of the pocket and stop being killed because he’s clueless to the pressure.

These negative factors don’t even take into account his proclivity for poor throws in crucial situations. He can make some truly amazing passes that make you say okay here we go, but in the end, they are balanced or surpassed by drive ending misses or game killing picks.

It’s amazing what he has accomplished. Not many could have come this far changing positions half-way through a college career — but, as much as I admire the attempt, he isn’t what the the Dolphins hoped he would amount to and paid for.

Before the draft I wrote that I really wanted Miami to pick a QB. I said that Miami should always be drafting a QB each and every year. Miami surprisingly did draft a QB, but of course they waited until the 7th round and drafted a very raw prospect in Brandon Doughty. In case anyone remembers my number one choice was Dak Prescott, and I even said we could draft him in the 3rd or 4th round. Prescott ended up going to the Cowboys in the 4th round with 37th pick in that round. For those pay per head software fans that are living under a rock, Prescott has led the Cowboys to a 4-1 record. And while he has what Tannehill never had as far as support of protection and a run game, he has already proved himself in 4 games to be better at consistency, handling pressure, and leadership then Tannehill has in 5 years.

Miami is never going to get out of this almost 2 decade slump until they find a quality QB. Miami is probably going to have a top 5 draft pick in the 2017 Draft, and if Coach Adam Gase gets another year as coach (which at this point ins’t a certainty), then he better use that pick to draft a QB. I would even go a step farther and draft two QBs and let the youngsters battle it out. If that does not work, then draft a QB every year in one of the first three rounds until we find one that can be a true franchise QB. This rudderless madness that has been an ongoing tragedy since Marino left has got to stop!!!

Every experiment has a time limit: 2016 is Tannehill’s limit.

The reality is that the success of a football team is heavily tied to the play of their QB, and until Miami actually finds a well-rounded, talented QB, they are not going to be a playoff team…and I for one am not getting any younger.

Doughty is currently on the Dolphins practice squad, but it might be worth putting him on the 53 man roster at some point later in the year and giving him a chance to play. Sure, the primary backup is Matt Moore, but all of us Miami Dolphins News fans know that Moore is not the long term answer. So let’s give Doughty a chance at some point to see if he can play or not. What is the worst thing that can happen, we lose another game?

Now, on a final note, I can also see two reasons why Tannehill should stay in for most of the year. First, if he can somehow start to produce even little, he might generate some trade value. Maybe he could get traded with a restructured deal and Miami could get even a little in return. As bad as he can make Fin Fans feel, there are at least 10 teams that would consider taking a chance on him an upgrade. I know it’s a long shot, but there’s not much to lose. Also, the second reason is there could be a miracle if this O-Line can come together — I know it’s sounds ridiculous to many, but it’s simply all due diligence. Again, it’s better to be totally certain than sorry. Besides, if he keeps losing Miami is positioning itself for a better pick.

This was always the most crucial question of 2016: Is Ryan Tannehill THE guy. I would prefer a much different outcome, but as long as Miami nails this decision, the future should get brighter. Go Fins!!!

Adam Gase is a Rookie Coach not impossible for him to win! But their are flaws in his game. He will not run a balanced offense some where in his head their is the concept the QB Arm only. Forget about power running etc. Defensively needs to be stronger than the Offense. We are don’t have at team STATUS?

Both team below are proof that We need Experience Coaching! Neither team would go into Battle without an Solid Run and Pass game. The proof is here. Second year and in the play off!

    11. It took the New Orleans Saints 32 years to win their first playoff game. The two expansion teams of 1995 (Carolina and Jacksonville) played for their conference championship in their second years of existence.

Since the team began play in 1995, there have been four head coaches.[1] In the NFL, head coaches
The team’s first head coach, Dom Capers

the Jaguars have won division championships in 1998 and 1999Tom Coughlin era (1995–2002)

and have qualified for the playoffs six times, most recently in 2007.

The Denver Broncos trusty John Elway to Manager their team.. We have Dan Marino who has more to prove than any Miami Dolphin currently playing because no Supper Bowl Ring. Who else would understand what the Hell a QB for the Dolphins must possess and surrounding teams? I’m about Result these coaches and players make millions. So I don’t feel sorry for them when they will not do their job and get cut. That means QB and Team. No one is exempt. Poor execution on game day is not the fans problems!

I agree Steve….I like Gase’s personality, but for whatever the reason his game calls are a bit like THills game…feast or famine. Not sure why? Lots of variables — the rest of the season should make it more apparent as to why.

I believe there are building blocks on this team. Laundry, Tunsil, Parker, Howard, Jones. I would have included James but he has fallen off the planet. You could include Grant, Drake, Carroo, those players are unproven at this point. That may not be a lot of pieces, but it could be worse. We need to get an identity, and that starts with A) the Head Coach, and B) the QB. It seems our Head Coach either doesn’t know what he wants his team to look like or doesn’t know how to get it there. I believe it is the latter. Not because he doesn’t necessarily know how, but because of the QB situation. and that is where “B” comes into play. The only successful offense that Tannehill could excel in would be a power run team (maybe), that is not Gases’ style or belief, not to mention that our team is not designed for that style.

There will a lot of turnover this off season, and should be. With the release of a handful of players (Tannehill being one of them), there will be plenty plenty of cap space to acquire a few free agents. Said money should be spent on two guards, and possibly a DE or CB. The draft, at least the first round pick will need to be spent on a QB followed by all defense from that point on.

The make up of this team could change drastically and become relevant again. The shitty part is, it will not happen until 2017 at the earliest. This is what BAD front office management (Ireland) does to a franchise, crippled us for 5-6 years.

…TH won’t be released, he’ll be traded …far too many QB needy teams that will take a gamble on him

…Gase is stuck with him for now …benching TH would lose Ross and put Gase’s job even more on the line .not to mention kill his rep as a QB whisperer …unless of course he does it and pulls a rabbit out of his hat

…so we’re likely doomed to limp along …TH will have a couple of good games just as he has the past 4 years …and then revert to his true form …the team can’t carry him

…I’m hoping that James is fixable …he was an anchor there once and should be again

…I’m losing any hope for Gase …I thought from the first that his decision to keep Thomas and Turner was a bad sign and the results to date bear that out ….and was never happy with his trying to turn Tunsil into a guard …but I didn’t expect the meltdown we’ve seen ….I expected to lose early but not to be humiliated by another 1-3 team

…we need a Belicheat or an Elway at the top of the food chain …get Ross completely out of the decision making …give the reins to someone like Manning or Marino

….but then what the hell do I know …we’re 1-4 …I’m a fins fan and it sucks …bad

  • Samson

People that want Moore or Doughty to start need to give it up. Moore is not a better qb than Tannehill and Doughty is not ready. People that are glad Gase got rid of Thomas and Turner….. My question to that is how stupid do you have to be to start them both. Turner had never played LT and Thomas is the worst guard in football. That is the coaches ignorance. Two weeks in a row Ajayi has actually looked good yet isn’t getting enough carries. Lets keep dropping the qb back to get killed while keeping our defense on the field. I don’t think the coaching could be worse if they tried to lose. We might get our choice of qb in the draft but Ross will keep Gase and the dumbasses in the front office for at least another off season. Remember when everyone new philbin should go yet he kept them around. We have very few building blocks on this team…. Landry will be due a big payday by the time we have any shot, wake will be retired, suh will be gone and we will probably let Jones go also because that’s what they do is let talent go. Tunsil might be the only player we have to build around…. Unless Grant,Drake and Caroo amount to something. It’s just sad to be a Miami fan right now and doesn’t look like it’s going to get better for several years

    • Lemmus

      …is TH ready to start?
…yes …start and lose …we have our answer on him, he’s a WR who can pass but is inconsistent at best

      …is Moore ready to start?
…yes, start and lose …starting him provides no answers for the future

      …is Doughty ready to start?
      …don’t know

…so lets find out before gambling away another high 1st round pick on an unproven QB …a gamble with a much higher failure rate compared to picking any other position ….only way to do that is start him

…little doubt Doughty would lose early with this OL and coaching ….but come January we’d have a fair eval on whether a 1st round QB is really needed or we can go for the bpa …like a LB

…I don’t want to roll the dice on another 1st round QB pick …not with this FO’s scouting record ….and not until we have a better idea of what Doughty offers

      • Samson

After year 1 of TH everyone thought we had a qb. Getting Doughty killed won’t tell us if he is the long term answer. How many 7TH round qb’s can start year 1??? I can’t think of any. He needs time and with this team he has plenty because it will be awhile before any qb can win in Miami

        • Lemmus

….normally I’d agree …but not now …the issue is do we take a high 1st round QB in the 2017 draft if we really don’t need to …if Doughty can play, then we can use that pick on defensive needs such as a LB or DB …even a DE if they continue their present play

…we wont know if Doughty can play if we don’t start him at some point

…I do agree that inserting him before the OL can protect him would be a mistake

…but Gase appears stuck on TH regardless …so far, his other personnel evals have been duds ….I think this one is as well …but the others won’t break the bank, TH could

          • admin

Normally I’d agree, but if Miami had 2 awesome QB’s then it would be high value staying or going…I’d take that!!!!

        • admin

I agree, let the kid marinate and see if he can even develop into a quality back-up…that alone for a 7th is a deal.

    NFL comp: Clinton Portis

Cook has good size, terrific burst, elusiveness, the ability to play in every scheme and the talent to play on all three downs. When I take into account his body type, playing style and projected potential in the NFL, I see former Miami Hurricanes running back Clinton Portis. I know, Seminoles fans … and I’m sorry.

Now, keep in mind that I’m talking about the Hurricanes and Denver Broncos version of Portis and not the version that the Washington Redskins turned into a grinder between the tackles. Portis had phenomenal one-cut ability in Denver’s zone scheme, with the ability to bury defenses once he surged past the second level. I see those exact traits in Cook. Lateral agility and field vision are other qualities that both running backs share. The one area where Portis excelled and where Cook has to improve is in blitz recognition and pickup.

We missed out on Ezekiel Elliot taking Tenusil which was a good moved.

Adam Case is a Rookie Coach and will take many spanking simply because he thinks the Run Game is old School. But the Run Game is the key to allowing time to passed.

Editor’s note: NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein will “dare to compare” prospects to NFL players throughout the college football season. This week, he provides a scouting report and comp for Florida State’s Dalvin Cook, who earned an A+ for his performance on Saturday vs. Miami.

I ranked Dalvin Cook as my No. 2 running back to watch heading into the season. His yards per carry, touchdowns and explosive rushes are down from last season, but he’s still one of the best in the game at creating yardage for himself when his offensive line fails to step up.

Cook has also made a habit of cranking up some of his biggest performances in spotlight games. He hung 194 rushing yards on Clemson last season, averages 163 yards rushing per game against Florida and has 588 yards along with 6 total touchdowns in 3 games against rival Miami. Here’s a look at what NFL evaluators will see when they watch Cook’s tape.

  • Dunner

Tanny has failed, and his days in Miami are down to 11 games. Having to invest a first round pick on a QB also means having to neglect other areas of need. Meaning; our defense is going to stink again most likely. We need a different maker at LBer, period! Until that happens, defensive struggles, not to mention DEs, another CB…. and oh yea a couple guards and probably a DT.

With the release of Albert, Pouncey, Tannehill, there will be PLENTY of cash to help address the guard position, possibly a DE and/or CB. There is no way a difference making LBer will be available via free agency, that is where the draft comes into play, but I guess that will have to wait till ’18, because our first pick in ’17 will be a QB!

    • admin

I’m still praying for a miracle…Jimmy is more down on T-hill than me…I’m hoping he can get his act together when the line comes through and then maybe get a restructure as a better case scenario…I can also see them firing Tannenbaum and rebuilding…I’m fine with that scenario as well!!!

      • Lemmus

…if/when Albert and Tunsil return, bench TH and start Doughty …do not run out the season with TH or Moore …they are not the future …give Doughty a long hard look before gambling on a 1st round QB pick …the QB fail rate there is way too high …especially if we already have one that can get it done

…we use FA to get the 2 best guards available …not someone else’s cast offs ala ’16

…use the first 2 picks on LBs …that’s where we are getting shredded against the run

…and going back to an idea I posted before …start Doughty at QB and TH at WR …and pitch the ball to TH at least 4-5 times a game …TH was a damn good WR before converting to QB …what he lacks is pocket presence and decision making …both of which are obviated if the ball is pitched to him on an option …he can throw it as well as any QB in the NFL, he can run routes and has good hands …and he can definitely block …defenders nightmare

…no idea if TH would agree to it …but if the option is being benched, he just might

…but we also have to evaluate Gase and staff …so far, it ain’t looking good

…the thing I fear most at this point is TH …he has over 4 years, averaged one good game in 5 …he’s overdue for a great game …and I’m afraid it would reset everyone’s mind at this point …for me, the TH eval is over …imnsho, he shouldn’t start another game once Albert/Tunsil are back

Best Conversation yet! I like Stephen Ross But I must admit! Stephen Ross is responsible for this mess. Why? Stephen Ross number one Stipulation before he hired a new coach this year was to accept Tannehill and work with him. Right or Wrong?

Irving Myers, Nick Saban, (Jimbo Fisher has a senior QB on the bench and a freshman starting) play to win nothing personal But the Dolphins need to wake up. Herm Edwards we laugh about his statement. We play to Win the Game. So the Best players will play until Stephen Ross realized this we will continue to be on the losing team..

You or JImmy had mentioned that we need to draft a QB every draft until we get it right! This is a true statement. It is Stephen Ross to blame for in the Manager and Coaches lanes trying to win games. Their are no Teachers or Owners pets on the team Right?

Next order in our Draft! considering Deshawn Watson is off the board early we can trade down for a top Running Back:. Who is healthy, durable etc. and will bring balanced to our offense.

In the 1st round Watson and Cook will both be considered for the Heisman Trophy.. We must take the Best player in this draft. The Dolphins strike out each time they go after position. Let go after the best players. We need to watch these players now while they are still playing in college.

    Hello Dolfans

Each season the talk is about we need linemen. We have linemen 2 or 3 Pro Bowler and about 3 1st round pick linemen. What gives? 1st the Coaching for decades has been Sub Standards.

This team play calling and execution is less than undesirable.

Watch the tape below: Here is a 1st year freshman starting QB. A. has the talent, B. Has the coaching C. Has a team. (A Rookie with talent, and a team that execute like they have been practicing.
