‘Chatter’ About Trade For Dolphins Cameron Wake
A trade of Wake would remove a key piece to the Dolphins success.
The NFL trade deadline is quickly approaching on Tuesday November 1st at 4pm, and even though the NFL is not generally known for having block buster trades during the season, like the MLB, there still is usually some movement.
There has been some ‘discussion’ out there of whether or not the Miami Dolphins should trade DE Cameron Wake?
Some of the best pay per head fans are saying it’s a worth the wild idea to trade the 34 yr old Wake because this would allow Miami to shed some money and probably yield them a 5th or 6th round draft pick.
I say it’s bunk.
First of all, Wake isn’t on the same planet as most 34 years old humans. He has already proven that he is a freak of nature — near superhuman — and can play at an elite level despite ‘little things’ like major injuries that would be career ‘ender’ for most. Wake may not have been super productive to start the season, but that was on the coaches. They were concerned with limiting his snaps and not over-utilizing Wake. However, over the last two games, the coaches have admitted their conservative approach and have significantly increased Wake’s snap count. The result has been a better overall pass rush and edge play in the run game for the Dolphins with Cam adding 2 sacks in 2 games.
Wake now has 3 sacks on the season, and if he continues to get 30 to 40 snaps a game, he has a real chance to have another double digit sack season to put under his belt.
If trading Wake will probably only yield a 5th or 6th round, then how does this seem reasonable to give up a player that is still a key contributor and leader of the team? I know the NFL is a business, but Wake has been with the Phins since 2009, and has been a big part of our team ever since. He still is an elite pass rusher in this league, and there is no reason he shouldn’t finish off his career with the Dolphins.
To trade a player of Wake’s caliber for back-end draft pick while greatly compromising any shot at continuing this turnaround would be a travesty. I don’t put much credence into this talk, and it seems like rambling chatter due to the poor start of Miami and the fact that the trading deadline looms. Go Fins!!!
