Miami Showing Interest in DT Dontari Poe

The Miami Dolphins are showing real interest in Dontari Poe

The Miami Dolphins are showing real interest in Dontari Poe

Poe would be expensive, but worth every dime

The Dolphins have been busy bees during this first week of free agency, and there has been a lot to be happy about if you’re a Miami Dolphins News fan.

Summing up the events so far:

The Front Office made it a priority to take care of their own first by resigning Stills, Branch and John Denney and extended Jones and Cameron Wake.

In addition, we significantly improved our Tight end group by trading for Julius Thomas, and then singing Anthony Fasano–who was ranked as the best blocking tight end in the NFL last year. We did lose Dion Sims, but these two additions should make for an overall upgrade.

The Dolphins also made a trade for DE William Hayes with the Rams, who is an older player at 31 years old, but he provides a lot of experience, a steady 5 sacks a year, and more importantly was ranked as the 11th best DE against the run last year–which should be an immediate upgrade for Miami in that area.

Poe and Suh and Phillips would be a steel wall against the running game

We also signed Guard Ted Larsen, who is more of a depth player that can play both guard and center, but he has plenty of experience starting and will be in the running for one of the two starting Guard positions. He was ranked 77 out of 82 Guards last year, which is not very good, so let’s see if this is actually an improvement or not.

Then Miami added LB Lawrence Timmons, who was a beast against Miami in the playoff game, where he torched Miami for 2 sacks. I love this move because Timmons is extremely durable and is an immediate upgrade to our linebacking unit.

Lastly, the Dolphins just signed Safety Nate Allen, who was a part time starter at safety last year for Oakland, but has plenty of starting experience with 76 games started over his 7 year career. He is going to replace Isa who unfortunately was released, and may never play again due to his unfortunate neck injury last season. It’s highly unlikely that he is an improvement over Isa, but he should be a capable starter that also has decent ball hawking skills with 13 career interceptions.

Now, here is where it gets even more interesting.

The Dolphins still have some holes to fill, and they have over $28-$24 million in cap space. They can still get rid of some players to save some cash, but they need to get Jarvis Landry a new contract, sign draft picks, some more depth free agents, and hold some in case of emergency for injuries during the season as well.

Poe is an absolute beast against the run

The latest name to hit the interest wire for Miami is Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe. Poe has spent his career playing a 3-4 scheme, however moving to a 4-3 defense should not be too much of a difference considering he would be paired with Suh. Poe is a two time Pro Bowl with 202 career tackles, 13 sacks, 12 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Real Bookies site lean heavily to Poe being an immediate boost to our D-line and run defense. This also shows that Miami is not 100% comfortable with Phillips having more snaps with the departure of DT Mitchell. However, he has a visit with Indianapolis first on Sunday, so if he makes it out of there without a contract, then that would open the door for Miami to make a move. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about our interest in Poe, and our other recent free agent signings so far?

The # 1& 2 defense was between the PATS And the Giants in 2016 the Dolphins ranked # 10.

    Atlanta
    Points allowed: 27
    Takeaways: 16
    Yards allowed: 25

We know the Falcons are all about offense, but they are at least a middle-of-the-pack team in forcing turnovers, which only gives Matt Ryan more chances to go to work.

Atlanta finished last among playoff teams in points per game allowed (25.4), but that doesn’t matter as much for a team that tries to outscore its opponents the way the Falcons have for most of the season.

The flaws in Atlanta’s D was exposed the last 8 minutes in the Super Bowl.

Dolphins must be in the top 3 defensively. POE help to make up a top 5 Defense last season. No brainer?

That being said we must have a great defenses coach!

That’s a big question is the new DC any good? He is best friends with Gase, but I dont see Gase as a guy who make moves to be mushy… proof is in the pudding though.

…Poe will likely break the bank but he could make the DL a top five contender and dramatically improve the run defense …he’s in his prime at 27 …and he can play goal line FB as well, effectively giving us a real double threat player

        …could, not would …huge difference when you’re talking 60 mil+

…both him and Timmons have never played in a 4-3 and we’ve seen way too many 3-4 stars fail here when converted to the 4-3 …they are going to need a lot of coaching and we have no clue as to whether our new DC is up to the job

…Donta Hightower has not signed with the Pats as yet and he would instantly transform our LB situation

…TJ Lang is the only G still available that could do the same for our OL …but he will be looking for Zeitler type money and at 29 with recent injury history, I’m not sure he’d be worth the 9-11 mpy in a 4 year contract …but, he’s it in FA, else we have to go to the draft board with a dearth of viable G candidates

…the cures for most of our ills are still out there, but will Tannenbaum even try to reel them in?

…so far, the Larsen signing has left me with a sick feeling …I went into FA believing they had finally “got it” about fixing the OL …Larsen isn’t even close …every team he has “started” for has chose to pass on keeping him …Miami is his 5th team …and he’s supposed to be our starting right guard? …give me a break, eh …not buying the spin that he is somehow suddenly a viable starter at RG for us …not even close

…come on guys …we’re starting a QB who will be playing with a knee brace for the entire season according to the FO …they don’t wear a knee brace for the hell of it; its because his knee is still vulnerable despite all the positive spin they are spouting

…he MUST have an OL that can protect him …and the stats say that isn’t Larsen

…and then there’s Ajayi who will be in his 3rd year at a position that rarely lasts more than 5 due to the physical beating it takes …last season, when the OL was fully manned with starters, he ran for 200+ three times …with subs in the OL, not even close …Larsen is another sub …period

…for crying out loud Tannenbaum, fix the damned OL!

Lemmus, I agree with you that Poe would be a great addition and he would break the bank, therefore, I see him coming to the Dolphins as very prohibitive. I just can’t see the FO having $200mil in the DLine. I could be wrong.
From a previous post I wrote:
There are some DT still available in free agency. Dontari Poe is the best one but he’s going to want a brinks truck full of cash so I doubt you’ll see him in a Dolphins uniform. A backup type to spell Jordan Phillips is still out there.

As far as the Oline goes, TJ Lang may not be the answer given his inability to stay healthy. But another serviceable guard out there is Andrew Gardner. From the same previous post I wrote:
There are still some free agent guards out there. Andrew Gardner, former Dolphins draft pick could fill the guard spot since Gase runs the zone blocking scheme. They don’t need a pro bowl player just someone competent considering that Fasano was signed to be a blocker, Julius Thomas was obtained to split the seam and be a red zone target, and Stills was re-signed to take the top off the defense. I agree the FO/HC will add another guard whether by free agency or the draft. They could even bring back Bushrod. I just don’t see a guard worthy of the 22nd pick after the top rated one is off the board but certainly one in the second round is a consideration.
So what I’m saying is that with the type of offense Gase can run with two good TE, the running game is going to be much better and some of the pressure will be taken off the OLine.

          • Lemmus

…Lang is gone, he just signed with Detroit for 9.5 mil a year for 3 years with 19 mil guaranteed 🙁

…I’m done with “competent” Guards, we’ve not seen one in 4 yrs now (not counting Tunsil) and defenses are now routinely pass rushing through them …”competent” is Bushrod/Lander etc etc …we tried growing our own and got the turnstile twins instead …why pay a non-franchise QB 20m and the guy protecting him less than a mil? …I don’t know, ask the FO?

…not a prayer we get a starting rated guard in this draft imnsho …too many OL hungry teams ahead of us and too few decent guard prospects …we will have to get damn lucky …TWICE!

…bottom line is we’re probably going to be worse across the OL this coming season than last …unless the FO can pull a couple trades out of their posterior orifice …fat chance that

…Poe is visiting the Colts today …not seen any Miami visit scheduled

…and its pouring rain to beat all hell on top of that 🙁
