Why The Rush To Restructure The Contract Of Koa Misi?

Misi had his contract restructured... but why?

Misi had his contract restructured… but why?

Misi was given a lower salary, but it’s guaranteed

The Miami Dolphins had a long meeting with Linebacker Zach Brown at the beginning of the week. However, he left headquarters without a contract because the two sides were still too far apart on money. Then Brown found out he wasn’t in the plans for the Bills and made a return visit to Miami.

So, he’s still in the fold at the moment.

However, Miami made a semi-surprising move by restructuring LB Koa Misi’s contract.

The surprising part is that Miami still wants to keep a player that is constantly injured and who is currently still recovering from a serious neck injury that some free bookie software fans thought might end his career. He has until the end of May to pass the necessary medical evaluations… however, even if he passes, Miami is still getting a player that has been constantly getting injured and who has only played one full 16 game season in his 7 years in the league–his rookie year. In addition, Misi is not a superstar and basically just an average linebacker… although, his one good aspect is in a run stop.

Oft-injured Misi has missed a lot of time during his career

So, the short story is that Misi was set to count as $4.8 million against the cap this year, and if Miami would have chosen to cut him they would have saved $4.2 million in cap space and only would have had to carry $575,000 in dead cap money against the cap. Instead, he agreed to a pay cut, and his new salary cap number for this season is going to be $2.8 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed. This means that if Misi does not get a clean bill of health to play in late May then Miami is still on the hook for $1.5 million.

Seems like an added unnecessary risk to take on an average player.

So, why the move?

What is confusing is that Miami could have just cut the often injured 30-year-old Misi and saved $4.2 million and then immediately used those savings to help pay for the younger, healthier, and better Brown.   Sure, they would have had to pay Brown more like $8 million. But if you count the savings of cutting Misi then it’s basically the same as getting Brown for $4 million. Honestly, on the surface, this appears a real head-scratcher, because there is no question that Brown is a better LB than Misi.

Are there deeper considerations to this move being overlooked?

Misi is a vet that is cheap, but can he be depended on?

But, now that Brown has made a second trip to Miami and is going to return to Oakland, it seems their commitment to Misi showed the Dolphins are standing pat. So, Brown has between Oakland and Miami to choose from and he has recently signed a Florida based agent. And let’s not forget that Miami has a huge edge over Cali in the tax department. It would seem Miami has a strong edge.

It would seem that Misi is being set up to be a back-up… maybe even a veteran back up a presence for about over 2 million for the season–an insurance policy of only a million more guaranteed verses before the restructure. Maybe, if they waited till later Misi wouldn’t have been so agreeable to the less deal? Dolphins rolled the dice for a million more to try and get Brown at THEIR price. and if not they’ll draft a starter in this draft with Misi as a vet role model. Either way, Misi will be a cheap vet who specializes in run stop and doesn’t force them to over-commit long term. I think if they get Brown, then it will be kudos to Mike Tannenbaum and Co.
