A Deeper Look at the Phins Big Trades

Let’s peel back the layers on the Phins trades

The Miami Dolphins just pulled off what many Phins News fans were hoping for with a trade back in the upcoming draft.  General Manager Chris Grier pulled off two different trades with two different teams in the span of a few hours. Initially, it looked like Miami was stocking up on future 1st Round picks for success down the road. But, Miami traded back into the Top 10, using a 1st Round Pick and a little extra, to grab some top-tier talent to help the team now.

All in all, Miami ends up with an extra 1st Rounder in 2023 and an extra 3rd round pick in 2022. On the down side, they swapped their 2021 4th round pick for the Eagles 2021 5th round pick.

Given all these moves, it appears Miami is all in on Tua. This was a loaded QB draft and Miami was in position to draft the 2nd or 3rd best QB in the draft… if they wanted to. Instead, Chris Grier saw the value of their unique position and traded from the 3rd Overall pick to a QB hungry team to help both their young quarterback and the future. It’s now Tua or bust and with an offensive weapon on deck with the 6th Overall pick to help him out.

Miami must really love one or more of these top prospects in this draft. They have to to have spent all that ammo to trade back into the Top 10.

Spitballin’ the Top 5 picks

  1. The Jaguars are definitely taking Lawrence!
  2. San Fran is definitely taking a QB because no team is going to trade away three 1st RD picks for anything but a franchise QB.  The talk is Trey Lance or Mac Jones. They didn’t attend Lance’s Pro Day, though.
  3. The Jets are still a bit of a mystery, but there is still a good chance they pull the trigger and draft a QB as well.
  4. The Falcons have Matt Ryan, but they could equally look for his replacement as a weapon to help him out.
  5. Clearly, the Bengals aren’t going to draft a QB, so they go with OT Sewell to protect Burrows.

So, in the worst case scenario, the Dolphins will be able to select at least one of the Top 2 non-quarterback players in this draft. Phins will certainy go offense with the first pick since this draft is a heavily loaded with Top 10 offensive players. The only worthy Top 10 defensive players are probably LB Micah Parsons, CB Patrick Surtain II, and CB Caleb Farley. Unless we trade Howard before the draft, I really don’t see us taking one of these two cornerbacks. Micah could be an option, but a decent amount of mock drafts have him going just outside the top 10….

… so I don’t see jumping back to #6 for him.

Obviously the smart bet with the pay per head bookie sites is that Dolphins have their eyes on any of the following: Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Kyle Pitts, or Penei Sewell. It would seem Miami has these players valued pretty much the same. If Grier were sold on one of these players they’d of stuck with the 3rd Overall.

The last thing this trade tells me is that Miami is betting on themselves in 2021 Season by trading away their own 2022 1st RD pick instead of the 2022 1sr RD pick they got from the 49ers. I like to they chose this pick because they have confidence. Of course, the decision could have been the Eagles too, but I’m a half-full kinda’ guy.

So what are the rest of the Phins News fans thoughts on this trade?

    Jimmy,

This whole trade scenario did leave me scratching my head a bit. So for the Dolphins to trade back in to #6 from #12, they must have someone that they really like and know he would not be available by our initial draft position at #8. Rumors have the Dolphins taking Pitts the outstanding TE from Florida. All of us who follow the NFL know just how much emphasis New England puts on their TE’s. The TE is like the queen in chess. The first player Brady wanted to come to Tampa with him was Gronk. I remember when the Pats had Gronkowski and Hernandez, this was an unstoppable combination that opened the entire offense for Brady to destroy defenses. This pairing did its fair share of damage to our Dolphins. Pitts is a tremendous TE. Some say the best TE to come out in quite some time. He runs and has the speed of WR’s, and technically a good blocker too. I have been reading up on him. Currently the Dolphins don’t have a complete TE who can be a strong threat in the passing game, but also provide good blocking to help the run. We use Gesicki for seam routes and longer passes downt the field, and Smythe and Shaheen on the 5-10 yard pass plays to get first downs and move the chains, plus they are both good blocker. As you can see, this combination is rather predicatable to opposing defenses, because they know we don’t have the total package at TE. Finally, If the team drafts Pitts, we are in a position to trade Gesicki for maybe a 2nd round pick or some other scenario. I also feel that with our #18 pick we go for the best RT and move Hunt to guard. Tua is a lefty, so we need a top flight RT. I am very excited not only about the upcoming draft, but the season too. I think Grier and the team did an excellent job bringing in quality football players both in skill and character during FA. Grier did not break the bank on 1 or 2 big name players, something this franchise has done too many times in the past, only to not get the results they wanted. No, he stuck to his principals and at the same time created competition and depth. Depth is key in this league. Injuries occur to all teams. However, the teams that can weather the storm play in the post season.

” Rumors have the Dolphins taking Pitts the outstanding TE from Florida” Him or Jones is the only ones worth a trade up for. QBs are always overvalued and elite TEs are safety blankets for QBs and the easiest yards on the field to net. I’m not high on Chase at #6 due to the extra picks attached. Wrs are slow to develop when they aren’t physical freaks and have a decent bust rate. In truth, I’m not ultra familiar with Chase, but plenty of college Wrs just aren’t special in the NFL.

” I also feel that with our #18 pick we go for the best RT and move Hunt to guard. ” Could be, but they need another edge player too. Jimmy’s latest article swayed me.

“No, he stuck to his principals and at the same time created competition and depth.” Will the same be said at QB? I worry that the Ross loves Tua enough to get involved. Last year was a weird one with “If I was his father I wouldn’t play him … to he’s the best chance to win line.” Tua needs to earn everything and not be given special treatment. It’s not good for him or the team. Brissett isn’t real long-term challenge. I just don’t get the kid gloves with the most important position.

This is a head scratcher. We did end up with extra first round picks. We do have a chance at the same players we probably would have taken at #3. Let’s see what we do with these picks. I give Grier credit for his swapping ability. I’ll bet he traded baseball cards as a kid!
We need to surround Tua with some great WR’s after that you have to go bet athlete at the need positions. Our season rides on Tua’s back. Give him the tools he needs with those picks!

” I give Grier credit for his swapping ability. I’ll bet he traded baseball cards as a kid!” That’s a great one.

I’m hoping for Pitts or Jones, so either they trade the pick for a team who wants Jones or keeps him for a
Plan B or to shop him if he shines as a backup. I’m not super big on WRs that low… a freak TE though has me at hello though.
