A Deeper Look at the Phins Big Trades

Let’s peel back the layers on the Phins trades

The Miami Dolphins just pulled off what many Phins News fans were hoping for with a trade back in the upcoming draft.  General Manager Chris Grier pulled off two different trades with two different teams in the span of a few hours. Initially, it looked like Miami was stocking up on future 1st Round picks for success down the road. But, Miami traded back into the Top 10, using a 1st Round Pick and a little extra, to grab some top-tier talent to help the team now.

All in all, Miami ends up with an extra 1st Rounder in 2023 and an extra 3rd round pick in 2022. On the down side, they swapped their 2021 4th round pick for the Eagles 2021 5th round pick.

Given all these moves, it appears Miami is all in on Tua. This was a loaded QB draft and Miami was in position to draft the 2nd or 3rd best QB in the draft… if they wanted to. Instead, Chris Grier saw the value of their unique position and traded from the 3rd Overall pick to a QB hungry team to help both their young quarterback and the future. It’s now Tua or bust and with an offensive weapon on deck with the 6th Overall pick to help him out.

Miami must really love one or more of these top prospects in this draft. They have to to have spent all that ammo to trade back into the Top 10.

Spitballin’ the Top 5 picks

  1. The Jaguars are definitely taking Lawrence!
  2. San Fran is definitely taking a QB because no team is going to trade away three 1st RD picks for anything but a franchise QB.  The talk is Trey Lance or Mac Jones. They didn’t attend Lance’s Pro Day, though.
  3. The Jets are still a bit of a mystery, but there is still a good chance they pull the trigger and draft a QB as well.
  4. The Falcons have Matt Ryan, but they could equally look for his replacement as a weapon to help him out.
  5. Clearly, the Bengals aren’t going to draft a QB, so they go with OT Sewell to protect Burrows.

So, in the worst case scenario, the Dolphins will be able to select at least one of the Top 2 non-quarterback players in this draft. Phins will certainy go offense with the first pick since this draft is a heavily loaded with Top 10 offensive players. The only worthy Top 10 defensive players are probably LB Micah Parsons, CB Patrick Surtain II, and CB Caleb Farley. Unless we trade Howard before the draft, I really don’t see us taking one of these two cornerbacks. Micah could be an option, but a decent amount of mock drafts have him going just outside the top 10….

… so I don’t see jumping back to #6 for him.

Obviously the smart bet with the pay per head bookie sites is that Dolphins have their eyes on any of the following: Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Kyle Pitts, or Penei Sewell. It would seem Miami has these players valued pretty much the same. If Grier were sold on one of these players they’d of stuck with the 3rd Overall.

The last thing this trade tells me is that Miami is betting on themselves in 2021 Season by trading away their own 2022 1st RD pick instead of the 2022 1sr RD pick they got from the 49ers. I like to they chose this pick because they have confidence. Of course, the decision could have been the Eagles too, but I’m a half-full kinda’ guy.

So what are the rest of the Phins News fans thoughts on this trade?
