A Few Athletic Freaks Available for Phins at #5

Miami will have a few athletic freaks to choose from with their first pick

Everywhere you look, the Miami Dolphins drafting a quarterback with their first pick is all the rage. Maybe it ends up that way… and maybe it doesn’t. Either way, the Phins will have a few players of rare athletic talent on the draft board when they select 5th Overall.

Given all the options Miami will have available, there’s no reason for the Phins to not draft a quality player with their top pick. Well, other than incompetence and/or desperation that is.

The NFL combine is a wrap and we saw some very amazing exhibitions of athletic talent this year. At #5 Miami will have a choice of one of the three top defenders in Young, Okudah, and Simmons along with a ton of quality Offensive Linemen.

One of these elite athletes will be on there for Miami to choose:
  • LB / S Isaiah Simmons: I wrote back in December that Simmons could be a wildcard for the Phins at #5, but I didn’t think he would get this hot. His 4.39 forty and 39-inch vertical at 6’4” 238 lbs to go along with his excellent tape makes his potential skyhigh. I really think he could jump Okudah as the second defender to come off the board. Simmons could be the long-sought answer to their inability to stop Tight Ends.
  • CB Jeff Okudah: John Gruden asked Okudah if he was from earth. That’s how good he is at cornerback. Posting a 4.48 forty, 41-inch vertical, and 135-inch broad jump at 6’1” 205 lbs, Okudah is called one of the safest picks in the draft because of his tape and elite size and speed. Given Howard’s injuries and personal problems, Okudah would either replace Howard or be part of a dynamic duo.
I don’t think any of the tackles are as talented as the top defenders…

… BUT, we all know the offensive line is an absolute must fix! So, maybe need trumps raw talent?

  • T Tristan Wirfs: The Iowa tackle has taken the lead over Andrew Thomas who has slid down to the middle of the 1st in most mocks. Don’t know how true this is in the eyes of NFL teams, but Wirfs definitely didn’t hurt himself with his 4.85 forty that was a combine record for O-linemen. His 36.5 inch vertical and 121-inch broad jump was equally as impressive at 6’5” and 320 lbs!
  • G Mekhi Becton: While I don’t see the Phins drafting the tackle converted to guard, he was one of the most amazing athletes of the draft. So, maybe he finds himself in the equation if the Phins make a small trade back. This kid is a little raw, but his talent is mindblowing. At 6’7” 364 lbs, Becton ran a 5.01 forty. Add to his size near 36-inch wingspan and near 11-inch hands, the kid is a giant of a man with movement skills. Voch Lombardi did a great review of him and his pancakes are amazing to see.
The Phins have more good options than they can shake a stick at

All these excellent options are just one reason why trading up for Tua is madness. Remember when the Dolphins drafted Tannehill at #8 because of need and the extra value of the quarterback position? This isn’t about Tannehill being good or not or about the Phins messing him up or not. This is about Miami passing on Luke Kuchly at #9, Stephon Gilmore at #10, Fletcher Cox at #12. Based on NFL history, each of these players played at an elite level… and Miami missed out. Let’s hope this history doesn’t repeat itself. Go Phins!!!

I disagree. Miami has plenty of picks this year. They are in a great position to trade down and pick up a 3rd or 4th first round pick in 21. With 3 or 4 first round picks, they will not have to mortgage anything to move up and grab the likes of Trevor Lawrence, which would be worth the wait in my opinion. In the meantime, they could actually put a good line together for Fitz and the future. I would love to see them pick up Issah Simmons with the first pick. They could possibly trade down a couple of spots and still get him, plus add future picks. We need a line. We do not need a 6′,left handed, injured Bama QB to save the day.Tua has bust written all over him.

I agree, Rich. But, if the pick was for an elite talent I can see that as well. But to your point, if Miami plays their cards right they could keep this multiple first train going for years. It would be much harder to restart that type pick sack than to keep it rolling. Still, if they could grab a generational talent that would be huge and they would have the extra 1st next year to pick up more picks. I’m just not sold on any of the QBs Miami can get their hands on. Simmons, Young and Okudah looks special… I do like the trade back as that would keep the picks coming and would keep the positive mojo goings as well. Very few fans would be unhappy at extra 1st and 2nds. Man, so many options. Let’s hope the Phins don’t choose the loser among them.

No way should we trade up for Tua! I know he still quote “checks all the boxes”, but I feel the team needs to stand pat at #5 and one of three QB’s. Need that franchise QB and Rosen does not appear to be it. I understand trading back and getting more picks, but you have to assume that this year, the Dolphins are going to be at least 500, if not possibly better. Next year’s draft has a few good QB’s, but we will have to mortgage the farm to get down low enough to draft one!

Hey, Stephen! Let’s hope they don’t. Most fans are on the same page with this. Is it the right path? Odds are yes, but anything is possible. Trading back or standing pat seems to better money move. Rosen’s main problem was progressions and by all indication, the system is very hard to learn. With the new system in place we could see Rosen bloom… well see and I wouldn’t bank on it. But there is hope. I though 6 wins last year. Depending on how they build I could see 6-9 or maybe 10 this year. They did 5 and could have had 7. So many factors, but I could see them having a winning record IF they picked a couple of excellent FAs, drafted well, and didn’t get killed by the injury bug… that’s a lot I know, but 5 wins should be the floor to this season. If they sell the farm for a QB though, I see less wins than if they don’t.
