A reason for hope

With the excitement of a brand new season quietly approaching, there is a sense of hope in the air that maybe, just maybe the Dolphins can give their fans something they have not seen since 2008; a trip to the postseason. Vegas already has the Phins at over/under 7.5 total wins for the season, which obviously will not end their playoff draught. But with a new coaching regime, and an influx of young talent, even though slim, there is an outside chance that the Dolphins can prove the sports online gambling savants of Vegas wrong.

When the Dolphins first agreed to terms with Coach Philbin, my initial reaction was, ‘why did we just sign the old host of who wants to be a millionaire, terrific.’ But upon further review of this calm well spoken man, who for some reason feels like he could have easily starred in a Seinfeld episode, he appears to have a certain “je ne sais quoi” about him, that exudes a soothing confidence. (I feel like Kramer would have befriended Philbin down in Del Boca Vista.) He is a straight shooter, who knows and warns that this train wreck that has been the Miami Dolphins, will take time to steer in the right direction, but under his leadership they will succeed.

He is already quickly installing a west coast style offense, which I am sure most phin fans will agree is a much needed revamp of the ground and pound philosophy of the Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells era in Miami. This league is a pass first, pass second, pass third league, and it is about time that the Dolphins get with the program. Yes, I know obviously, when a team is rotating through QB’s faster, then Jenna Jamison rotates on a new stunt cock, then the chances of long term success are minimal. But it will be exciting to see the Dolphins have an up tempo vertical offense, and hopefully this style will unleash hidden talent. One player in particular that should benefit from this new attacking offense will be hybrid FB/TE Charles Clay.

The Dolphins may go 4-12, 8-8, 11-5 next season, truthfully no one really knows until the games are played and the finally whistle is blown. But with a new coaching staff in town, there is always a certain amount of hope that maybe, just maybe the ship can finally be set on the right course, with Coach Philbin at the helm.
