Beware the Injury Bug

The NFL is less than one month away from the opening of it’s 2015 free-agency period, and between releasing players with bloated contracts, restructuring contracts, and adding new players, the Miami Dolphins organization is going to be very busy. The Dolphins have a few key areas that they need to improve, so they must focus on finding at least 2 game day starters through free agency.

One thing Hickey and the rest of the organization must do is stay away from players that have a history of injuries. Jeff Ireland was infamous for signing free-agents that had a checkered bill of health, and the result was that those players came to Miami played decent for a few games until they became injured once again. Hickey did a decent job last year, but unfortunately, he went after players that also had a history of injuries, such as Albert, Moreno, and Delmas. Don’t get me wrong, when each of those players was starting they played very well, however, each of these players could not make it through the entire season. That is the catch-22 with these players, there is no doubting their talent, however, each of these players came into training camp with a question mark of could they stay healthy, and the answer was no.

As a result, Moreno and Delmas will probably not be resigned, because they were signed to one year contracts and were given the chance to prove if they could stay healthy for a full season, and they could not. Albert was given a long term contract and was the team MVP while he was in the lineup, but he injured his knee. He is apparently ahead of schedule in his treatment but he was injured before in his career and will now have another injury under his belt so the chances of him getting injured again in his career are higher than a player that is generally healthy. At least Hickey and the Dolphins were wise enough to offer 1-year deals to Moreno and Delmas, and they may take a similar strategy on a talented yet often injured player this off-season.

Most of the best pay per head reviews would say that if a team is constantly signing players that have a history of injuries and these players are staying true to form and are experiencing more injuries while they are a member of the Dolphins, then it may be wise to change up the strategy. Why not go after talented players that have a history of playing a full 16 game season. It is time for the organization to man up and learn from their mistakes, and one of those mistakes is targeting injured players.

There are plenty of talented players that will be free-agents this season that have had a healthy career, so why not target those players. A player like Moreno flashed great potential in the opening game, but then the injuries piled upon him, and the result was that Miami spent all that money on a talented player, but got nothing in return for him. Even healthy players can get injured, but the trend is that once a player gets injured then they tend to get injured again. So please let’s try to sign and draft healthy players this off-season, because no matter how good a player is if they are not healthy enough to play then they can not help your team.
