BIG Cuts Free Up BIG Cash
Cuts today included some big contracts freeing up the payroll
The Miami Dolphins sent a loud message to the team and it’s fans today: out with the old and in with the new.
First, I want to thank Branden Albert for all that he brought to Miami during his time in South Florida. It was a lot, really. Injuries aren’t a players fault. They happen. And especially this last season, Albert played through a terrible injury to support this franchise.
So, only the best of luck because you are a class act.
The same should be said about Earl Mitchell. He played hard and was a good leader and locker room presence. You can’t ask for more. Injuries happened and his contract didn’t meet his production, but it wasn’t from being lazy… so, only the best to you Earl.
Speaking of lazy…
Mario Williams under performed in a big way. Was it that his body broke down, the will to play faded, or just plain ole’ being lazy and wanting to collect a big check for doing little? Honestly, there isn’t any Real Bookies lines on this, so I can’t say with a 100% certainty which it was. But whatever the reason, I’m glad he is going because his acquisition was a blemish and his memory will be as a bust of a move.
Ekpre-Olomu was also cut. His tenure was another one marred by injury. I hope the kid finally gets healthy and earns a spot.
So, with around $21 Million in savings, the Dolphins will have a load of cash to make upgrade, but they must spend wisely. This approach of cap responsibility is the key to winning in this Cap Era. They will have space to buy, and while I hope they go out and get a top flight Guard (or two), and maybe one more top player to fill one of there many big holes, I hope they shop with the idea of talent level equaling or exceeding the pay. That would be nice…wouldn’t it?! Go Fins!!!

…anything that could lead to our being able to get into the 3rd/4th round would be a treat …Albert is still a damn good LT despite his injury history …he’d still be here if Tunsil hadn’t fallen into our lap …but the lack of 3rd/4th round picks in a deep defensive draft will hurt …if trading Albert leads to filling that gap, more blessings on the FO
…aside from the initial cuts, I just don’t get so many draft previews having the fins picking a DE or TE with the 22nd pick …they can’t believe we’re going to fill both guards and both LBs in FA …and we are hurting waaaaay more at those positions than either DE or TE …those are WANTs, not MUSTs …but them what do I know, eh
I think you’ll see Miami be big buyers in FA, but not necessarily spending a lot of cash. I think they will fill the holes with a lot of players so they can draft the BPA rather than chase a need. I think they will buy big in two positions, G, LB or DE. After that they will go the Branch route, underachiever they can coach up. I think at the end of this off season hey will still have divots, but not holes.
…LOL …every team has divots, even the Pats …its the coaching that matters with divots and though hating the Pats is a must, they do have great coaches
…actually fixing the OL can’t be done with divots though …they’ve tried that for the past decade and failed miserably …neither can drafting 3rd/4th rounders be counted on, ergo, the turnstile twins
…pay what it takes to sign Leary and Zeitler, et al …there are some very good guards available in FA …then a couple divots for BU center and guard
…get the best FA MLB available with 4-3 experience …then draft an OLB at 22 if we didn’t cover that in FA as well
…then we can talk about BPA …two very good TEs available, both likely low round 1 …any number of potentially good DEs in this draft and will still be some past 2nd round
…then we can go the BPA route
…be interesting to see the coaches that Gase brings in …a good number should be willing to take the risk with him now
hahaha…yeah, Lemmus. That’s the deal. Good FO’s take away glaring weaknesses and good coaching schemes and hides though weaknesses so they aren’t abused. I was on getting a big time G last year with Osemele this year Zeitler and Warmack…don’t like Leary as he gets exposed in pass protect even a RG….that is a bad sign for me. Miami will get one big time G…if they don’t I will be shocked, saddened, and totally teed off.
Albert is staying (for now). Apparently the “cut” news came from his agent, whom was told that Albert would be released. However; teams were acquiring about Albert via trade. I can’t see him garnishing anything more than a fifth rounder, possibly a fourth. Either way it would be good for Miami. Predictions have us receiving two extra fifth round compensatory (Mathews, Miller) giving us 3 fifth round picks. Add a Albert trade (5th round), that could give us 4 fifth round picks. That could give us ammunition to move up in the middle round(s) or stay put and add quality depth, or get fortunate enough to land 1-2 starters. It is a good draft for extra picks because the draft is defensive heavy, it plays right into our needs.
The players cut yesterday and the cash freed up, should give us enough $ to go out and get our guards, DE, or LBer(s). Plus, also help retain some of our own = Stills, Sims, D. Williams, Thomas, Deny.
Yeah, read it yesterday. It came from so many sources I assumed it to be true (Albert being cut). Jacksonville is said to be the most interested… anything in return would be good at this point. It could also be to trade up some spots in the draft, which would be fine as well.
