Blockbuster Trade For Phins This Off-Season?

If Gase is back in 2019 is a blockbuster trade on the menu?

There's one option not talked about for the Dolphins 2019 QB

There’s one option not talked about for the Dolphins 2019 QB… blockbuster trade

Phins are literally limping into their bye week… and their fans are figuratively crawling there with them.

Unfortunately, hope for the present and future of the franchise has taken an equal beating in 2018.

Whether or not Ryan Tannehill can get healthy and play well will be the biggest question for the remainder of THIS season. But for beyond 2018, Tannehill is far less crucial… because Miami still hasn’t found what they are looking for in a QB.

Whether Gase stays or goes, Phins must go fish in the Quarterback pool.

If Gase stays, he likely won’t have a leash long enough to develop anything but a blue-chip rookie. Given the Phins mediocre record, a blue-chip rookie is out of reach… even if they decide to dump a boatload of picks.

And so far, most of the veteran names being tossed around as replacements are nothing more than guppies.

So what to do, what to do… if Gase returns?

If Gase is back in 2019, he needs a blue chip Rookie QB or FA vet to succeed

The Dolphins need a QB. That’s a fact. Tannehill has missed too many games over the last 2 and half seasons… and his performance this season has left a lot to be desired. He isn’t the answer unless he has a miracle makeover over during the remainder of this season.

I’ve been saying for years: ‘Always draft a QB’. That QB doesn’t have to come in the first round. But in each draft, Miami should bring be bringing in a fresh arm.

You won’t ever stumble upon the next Tom Brady if you don’t draft a QB.

Coach Gase has gone through three drafts and drafted one, yes count ’em, ONE QB in 3 drafts. And that lone QB came in the 7th round of the 2016 Draft. Brandon Doughty, BTW, is NFL dust in the wind.

Now, this ISN’T a rumor… just me spitballing.

My blockbuster trade proposal is for the Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr.

It was just in 2015 and 2016 that Carr threw for 32 TDs and 13 Ints, and 28 TDs and 6 Ints respectively.

The Raiders have wisely chosen to go full rebuild mode with Coach Gruden at the controls. They are in prime position to get the number one pick in the draft. This will probably be the #1 rated College QB recruit of Oregon’s Justin Herbert.

We were once at the #1 spot in the Draft & Phins chose Jake Long over Matt Ryan.

The Raiders said they want to keep QB Derek Carr. But the body language of Carr and Coach Gruden on the sidelines looks like an unhappy marriage keeping up pretenses. Gruden will probably be ready to deal because he has already traded away the best Linebacker in the league as well as their #1 Wide Receiver. So, the best bookie software service like www.AcePerHead.com is betting that Carr will not be playing in Oakland next year.

What can Miami give the Raiders in order to finally give Coach Gase a franchise QB in Derek Carr?

Well, for starters, I would just about give him any player combination the Raiders want except for Minkah, Howard, and Tunsil.

However, just to put something together on paper:

If Tannehill can get back and play before the end of the season, throw him in the trade. The Dolphins would eat plenty of his bloated $26.6 million dollar contract, but that would be an enticement for Oakland. At the very least, the Raiders can use Tannehill as a backup to their Rookie QB.

Then I would throw in Pro Bowl Safety Reshad Jones AND Wide Receiver DeVante Parker.

Clearly, Jones is still an elite talent and could immediately be a boost for a middle of the road Raiders secondary. Jones recently had an issue with the coaching staff, and players that have issues with this coaching staff get cut or traded. Maybe the Phins could break the trend and at least get something in return for him.

While Parker hasn’t lived up to his draft status, he’s young and has elite talent. The Raiders could use an upgrade at wide receiver with Jordy Nelson, who’s also always hurt and is well into his thirties. Martavis Bryant, Seth Roberts, and Dwayne Harris don’t scream future either. This could be a roll of the dice move… nothing really lost if he doesn’t make it. But if he does, Gruden would get a home run.

Phins would need to add a pick in this deal

This trade will take some extra juice, so throw in Kenyan Drake to seal the deal. Miami has refused to utilize him this year anyway, so why not get something of value for him. He’s young and is a promising player 3 down Running Back. He’d be a starter for Oakland. If there’s one thing Miami has been able to draft it is RBs.

Now, even if Miami was to magically listen to my wild idea, the most important thing is that they learn from past mistakes: draft young QBs often–the more QB talent the better. These QB acquisitions don’t need to come in the first round… BUT if you don’t draft them, you’ll never find them. The NFL is first and foremost about the QB position. You don’t win when you have a depth chart that’s a trash bin filled with QBs like Cutler and Osweiler. Even if they were to get Carr, they should bring in the best QB talent from the draft that is possible. Maybe he develops… and then we can end up the beneficiary of a QB trade. Wouldn’t that be nice… an overabundance of QB talent in South Florida?  What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about this trade scenario for the Dolphins this off-season?

This quarterback since he started behind Baker Mayfield etc QB’s, He won the job his 4th or 5th season. That being said his stock will not be high and he may not get drafted. I believed that We can wind with a 3 quarterback play. Luke Falk, Gardner Minshew, Kyler Murray and Cornelius Taylor. Each brings something unique to the dolphins and that is they Win.

    Quarterback Cornelius Taylor
Oklahoma State has victories against three teams that did show up in the rankings this week in No. 11 Texas, No. 12 West Virginia and No. 21 Boise State. The Pokes also took No. 6 Oklahoma to overtime last week.

We need to stop this talk about trading the house for one player that could get injured then we are two or three years in the hole on draft picks?????

  • Keep Osweiler, cut everyone to build cap space, and TANK for TUA.

Mike I like that a lot. If we don’t go 4-2 then Gase and Tannenbaum need to go… This was Jimmy’s… DEF. not mine. I think Carr is better than what we have, but not good enough and not worth spending a bunch of picks on (because we never get him with a heap of junk platers). Thing I least want to see is Gase and Tannehill come back if they flop this season. That will suck the life out of for sure. I think McCarthy will get canned and he’d be a good option at HC… we’d still need an aces GM.

My questioned is this: how many players by name can we trade for a 1st or 2nd round picked? This is one way to measure the Dolphins front Corporate office success or failure?

Stephen Ross hit the reset button! This madness has to stop each season discussion about the Dolphins mediocre performances.

        • admin

It’s so true… we aren’t terribly untalented, but we aren’t in a good enough position. The biggest issues is QB. We need an elite QB or an elite team around an above average QB… we have neither.

    • admin

BTW, yeah keep Brock and Falk and Fales… time to say goodbye to Tannehill unless he bounces back in an epic way.

    Hello Admin

I wrote about Cornelius the Oklahoma State Quarterback who played behind Baker Mayfield and this is his 5th year playing, We all here about Will Grier who is considered a 1st round talent by many maybe, But Cornelius is not even on the Draft Board as Quarterback Yet! This is what the Dolphins need someone who Wins.

In his final home game, Cornelius passed for 338 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 106 yards and another score to help Oklahoma State (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) become bowl eligible.

“For him to be able to finish this way is a big deal,” Gundy said.

Down 31-14 at the half, the Cowboys won despite leading rusher Justice Hill sitting out with a rib injury.

“Our coaches made tremendous adjustments at halftime,” Gundy said. “I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Chuba Hubbard rushed for a career-high 134 yards for Oklahoma State, and Dillon Stoner caught nine passes for a career-best 127 yards.

Grier passed 364 yards and two touchdowns, but his Heisman campaign took a hit with the loss. Kennedy McKoy rushed for a career-high 148 yards for the Mountaineers.

West Virginia (8-2, 6-2, No. 9 CFP) faces Oklahoma next Friday and can still reach the Big 12 title game with a victory.

Grier’s 6-yard touchdown run on fourth down in the fourth quarter gave West Virginia a 41-31 lead, but Cornelius’ 9-yard touchdown run and a stop by Oklahoma State’s defense put the Cowboys in position to win.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen felt his team should have been in a better position late.

“I think we left probably 14 points out there,” he said. “When you are in the red zone and can’t punch it in — if you are a great offense, you do that.”

It’s the first time Oklahoma State has beaten Top 10 teams in back-to-back home games — the Cowboys knocked off Texas on Oct. 27. In between, the Cowboys lost 35-31 at Baylor and 48-47 at Oklahoma.

If you’re an NFL team using a top-10 pick to select a quarterback, you might as well be betting the value of your franchise on a coin flip. History tells us that quarterbacks drafted in the top-10 have about a 50% chance of panning out into the type of player you can build a franchise around. The proof is more or less in the pudding. To show you what we mean, let’s take a look back at all the quarterbacks drafted in the top-10 since 2000.

    Michael Vick, Falcons – #1 in 2001
    David Carr, Texans – #1 in 2002
    Joey Harrington, Lions – #3 in 2002
    Carson Palmer, Bengals – #1 in 2003
    Byron Leftwich, Jaguars – #7 in 2003
Eli Manning, Chargers, traded to Giants – #1 in 2004
Philip Rivers, Giants, traded to Chargers – #4 in 2004
    Alex Smith, 49ers – #1 in 2005
    Vince Young, Titan – #3 in 2006
    Matt Leinart, Cardinals – #10 in 2006
    JaMarcus Russell, Raiders – #1 in 2007
    Matt Ryan, Falcons – #3 in 2008
    Matthew Stafford, Lions – #1 in 2009
    Mark Sanchez, Jets – #5 in 2009
    Sam Bradford, Rams – #1 in 2010
    Cam Newton, Panthers – #1 in 2011
    Jake Locker, Titans – #8 in 2011
    Blaine Gabbert, Jaguars – #10 in 2011
    Andrew Luck, Colts – #1 in 2012
Robert Griffin III, Redskins – #2 in 2012
    Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins – #8 in 2012
    Blake Bortles, Jaguars – #3 in 2014
    Jameis Winston, Buccaneers – #1 in 2015
    Marcus Mariota, Titans – #2 in 2015
    Jared Goff, Rams – #1 in 2016
    Carson Wentz, Eagles – #2 in 2016
    Mitchell Trubisky, Bears – #2 in 2017
    Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs – #10 in 2017

    Conclusion
If we hold off judgment on the quarterbacks taken over the past three or four years, just under 50% of quarterback taken in the top-10 since 2000 have come anywhere close to living up to expectations, and that’s if we give quarterbacks like Vick, Smith, and Bradford the benefit of the doubt. To be fair, the younger crop of quarterbacks that have entered the league in the last couple of years could sway that percentage significantly. However, if you want to draft a quarterback in the top-10, it’s 50-50 at best to work out.

That’s the KEY… you can go all in and spend a ton of picks and then if that QB flops you’ve lost half a decade. NOW, you can draft a QB high with one pick, and he can be a bust, and you can bounce back in 2-3 year. The all in big trade up almost never works. BTW Jimmy soup of junk wouldn’t get Carr… but I’d take Carr for a reasonable price as a stopgap.

    • Rich McQuillen

Your group has top 10. #5-10 is an interesting sub-group:
      Byron Leftwich, Jaguars – #7 in 2003
      Matt Leinart, Cardinals – #10 in 2006
      Mark Sanchez, Jets – #5 in 2009
      Jake Locker, Titans – #8 in 2011
      Blaine Gabbert, Jaguars – #10 in 2011
      Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins – #8 in 2012
      Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs – #10 in 2017

Mahomes is really the only above average qb on that list. Tannehill seems to be the second best guy on this list. It seems pretty hard to get a good qb in this range.

There are plenty of misses in the 1-4 range, but better odds.
      *****
The list is also missing 2018:
      Baker Mayfield – #1
      Sam Darnold – #3
      Josh Allen – #7
      Josh Rosen – #10

    Bad Deal!

Considering Carr is worth that why don’t the raiders keep him. Let the season run its course and used every quarterback that the Dolphins have on the their roster, so there is no mistake not to bring them back next season.

    • admin

It’s Jimmy’s brother. And he has me here as clean up. After I edited it, I cringed at hitting publish. Jimmy and I are polar opposites on this one… but it’s his site. I just work here. I don’t think Carr is bad. I think he is better than anything we have. I don’t really want him, though. I want a crash and burn and a new regime. I’d love for Gase and Tannehill to have a Pheonix like rise… I don’t see that though. Watched the Colts game and I don’t think we win there… my worst case scenario is Gase flops this year and gets to come back in 2019. I have all but lost faith in Gase and Co. and Tannehill… almost. If they come out against the Colts like gangbusters then I’ll get back on the saddle.

  • Ken

We should give the Raiders a 1st, 3rd and 5th this season, a 1st and a 3rd next season along with Wake and Parker to move up and draft Herbert.

That would give us Tannehill, Falk and Herbert as QB’s. Then have a three way competition for the starters job.

    • admin

This was Jimmy’s article, but I (M.J.) am doing most of the responding this season. SOooo, I have heard mixed reviews on Herbert. I need to watch him to have an opinion. BUT, for the sake of argument, if he’s a Mayfield like prospect, then spending picks is needed. Problem is if we have a mid round 1st RD pick they might ask for more than what you suggest. Also, a team with a lower 1st might have the edge and we then would be priced out. I think the major flaw in Jimmy’ article is that player aren’t really valued much these days unless they are young and elite. The only player he mentioned of any real value would be Drake. Gruden and most teams want picks. I would love a 3 way QB competition as you ordered… but I have a feeling the Raider or a Top 10 team will get Herbert even if that top 10 team trades with the Raiders, Ken.

      • Steve

Herbert and Drew Lock are both overated. Who has been on fire is Okalomaka State Cornelius has completed 64 of 99 passes for 839 yards and eight touchdowns his past two games.

  • Van

Tannehill will be cut on June 1 but I doubt if we are able to trade for Carr. The raiders will want three first round picks for him. Jones is trade-able but Parker is a bust – no trade value there. You have a broken down QB, a malcontent Safety and an injury prone under achieving WR. That is comparable to a pile of wet kindling! In addition, we have won enough games to keep us out of contention for a good draft pick at QB. Besides, we have a porous O-line.

Our defense demands a high linebacker pick next year, as well. We have needs everywhere and big contracts stifling any real roster advances next year. The cap is going to eat us up! Ross needs to fire Tannenbaum and pray for a miracle.

    • admin

“Tannehill will be cut on June 1 but I doubt if we are able to trade for Carr. The raiders will want three first round picks for him. Jones is trade-able but Parker is a bust – no trade value there.”

      YUP!

As I’ve said many times in this article, Jimmy wrote this one and left me to clean up his mess. The trade is fantasy… maybe Gruden would be a drunk as Jimmy was when he wrote this and would accept it… other than that it would never happen. I do agree with him on getting QB’s every year and that Carr would be a better option than anything we have and the list of FA currently circling. We do need a LB, but a QB is the more pressing need. UNFORTUNATELY, everyone wants one and there aren’t many available.

The reason I could see getting Carr is that you then can take some shot in the mid rounds for a couple of years and move on from Carr. He is only making 19 mill a season and could be cut without a cap hit. We are between a rock and a hard place if Gase returns. He would need an extension of have credible authority and create stability. That would mean you go with Tannehill or find a QB mid rounds and beyond because a pick in the 12-17 range is no man’s land for a big trade up. The best case scenario is Gase Tannehill have a miracle wake up, or the Phins crash and burn and we find a new regime. Mike McCarthy looks like he’ll get fired… but then we’d need an excellent GM.

  • Edwin e Pena

Damn dude, what kinda trade is that ?? RT and D.Parker and maybe a conditional 3rd round pick tops. R.Jones, because he was a “bad boy” for a little bit ? Kenyon Drake ?

    Are you nuts ?

Why not go a 360, and give them Osweiler, Z. Sterrup, L. Caroo, McTyer, and C. Harris ?
5 scrub a dub dubs…? I think my idea is less crazy than yours.

    • admin

Edwin this article was Jimmy’s… not mine… but I do the responding, so here we go. To be honest, I cringed as I was editing his trade menu. He runs the show, but I have to be honest. That’s a nutty “Madden like” deal… that wouldn’t never happen in reality. Only Drake has any value of all the players he listed. I think he was drinking or something. Maybe he was busting my balls because he knows I answer all the messages. Now that said, the article was based on if Gase returns… and if Gase does come back, I don’t see many good options at QB. So, the two areas of his article I do agree on is we need to get QBs every year and Carr is a better option we have now.

BTW I like your trade offer better…
