Will Brian Flores lead the Phins out of the gutter

Brian Flores’ presser showed a man earnest, likable, but raw

It’s official, Brian Flores is the 13th Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Lucky thirteen?!

Patience in all things is an essential ingredient for success, so, let’s give it at least one full season (if not two) before we jump to conclusions either way.

Coach Flores’ press conference presented an earnest, humble man raw behind the microphone. The encouraging thing is, he can easily develop mic skills… a man’s character is almost hardwired after his twenties.

Owning good character is 100% guaranteed to take you a long way in football…

…But, you only need to look at Bill Belichick to know snazzy personality means next to nothing.

Good news: Flores appears to have a solid handle on the tough components of the personality equation.

So Flores’ presser checks all the key boxes presented… at this point. Out of the shoot, his ‘nothing to see, move along showing’ is a good thing considering the perpetual drama and awkward HCs that have surrounded Miami for some time.

Unfortunately, I must slap myself to recall how smitten I was by Adam Gase’s introductory press conference…

…In retrospect, my flight from Philbin rushed my affection. The oceans of difference between the two on the surface made me swoon. The trap here is falling in love with Flores’ humility over the awkwardness of Gase.

So, while this was a good first encounter, there’s a long way to go before we will answer the more crucial questions on Flores’ acumen as a Head Coach.

It’s unlikely that this regime will be worse than what we’ve had in Miami for the last twenty years…

… and, not to be a ‘Debbie Downer’, also unlikely that he wins a Super Bowl a well.

The reality of tepid results being the most probable outcome is a reasonable bet with the pay per heads.

My ‘not too outlandish hope’:

Because of Ross’ commitment to building the team the right way through patience (that word ugly and beautiful word again), I feel hopeful that Grier, Allen, and Flores will raise the Dolphins shallow talent and character pool.

A rising tide raises all boats, they say.

The talent acquisition side is the real key to everything. If this ‘dream’ actually happens it will dramatically boost the chances for this regime… or the next. Either way, the franchise will be on a better track.

The early feel is that Grier, Allen, and Flores will indeed bring more consistency in talent acquisition, character, and on-field performance than we’ve had in quite some time.

Consistency is the enemy of dysfunction…

If this crew achieves installing a consistent nature but doesn’t arrive at greatness, the Miami Dolphins will have had a cathartic moment with this regime.

That’s a small start, I know… but it’s better than being idle or regressing.

It’s a long ball approach, I know. But at this point, I’m so desperate that I’ll slurp it down with a smile like ‘Buffalo Wing Pizza’ and Coca Cola.

From the first interview these nuggets impressed me as good signs:

“In this game you’ve got to be multiple. Teams will find your weaknesses and take advances of it,” Flores said. This reflects perfectly the Art of War: “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” The Rams understand the value of this lesson very well… now.
Flores sees himself as a demanding coach and went to great lengths to stress (near ad nauseam ) his core principles of the ‘team, hard work, and selflessness’.
Flores has taken part in every inch of an organization from ‘getting lunch’ to calling plays. He will be an overseer Head Coach, not a specialist/hybrid.
Disciplined play through lack of turnovers and controlling penalties were two points stressed.
Family focus, inside and outside of the team, is who Brian Flores is.

As Flores said about himself, ‘He’s looking forward’.

This is what I expect this offseason to be about: preparing for the future.

Who can help this team three plus years down the line? Everything and everyone else will be jettisoned.

The only older players that might be back in 2019 that won’t be around beyond 2020 is Cameron Wake and Danny Amendola. They are everything that Flores wants in a player and perfect examples are worth more than their weight in gold. Get ready for a wild ride. Go Phins!!!
