With Ramsey down, Cam Smith is key for the Phins 2023 success
The Miami Dolphins selected defensive back Cam Smith in the 2nd Round with high hopes that he would bolster the secondary… in time. So far, Smith’s performance in Training Camp is validating that hope. And with Jalen Ramsey down for a few months, it’s critical that not only does Smith bring help, but brings it sooner rather than later. That’s why his performance today during the first practice in pads is such a great sign that Smith will deliver and deliver sizable snaps come Week.
Now, nothing is guaranteed, but the kid couldn’t be doing any better and that’s all you can ask for.
Smith is one of many Dolphins defenders doing well!
Below is one of two of Smith’s pass breakups on the day. It does take the best football software to see his closing speed and agility to reach out and break up the pass was an impressive play.
While I didn’t like how he got up and favored the arm, the kid was giving his all and wanted to show his worth. And that I like a lot!
Just protect yourself a bit more, Cam. We need you in a big way.
The Dolphins’ defense looks fierce even sans Ramsey
While the Dolphins’ secondary played well today, it was bolstered by a ton of pressure. Wilkens, Ogbah, Phillips, and Chubb pressured the QBs throughout practice. This is an elite unit and overmatches most of the Dolphins’ Oline, who are playing without their leader, Terron Armstead. So, we can’t read too much into this.
The excellent news is that Armstead was on the field doing warmups and looks to be close to returning to the field. His return should level the playing field quite a bit…
…Still, the offensive line needs to pick up the pace and get some day where they are on the winning side of things. It’s early, but the camp reports of the Dolphins offensive line struggling in camp is a broken record that I want to be smashed ASAP! We need the O-line to finally be part of the solution to have a truly great season in 2023.
Day 1 of hitting is in the books, plenty of time to get the team better.
Overall, the Dolphins have bounced back hard in a good way from the Ramsey injury. It could have easily been something the team felt defeated over. Character and perseverance will take you a long way in life and in the NFL. Go Phins!!!
