When Philbin was sent packing, the era of change for the Miami Dolphins started. Now with Rizzi being promoted to assistant head coach, the staff seems to be set and the changes finished – at least till next year. But changes to scheme and players have just begun.
This is what we know and what Campbell has announced.
- Miami will be aggressive and although they will keep the defensive scheme DL will no longer read and react and soak up blocks. They will penetrate gaps and disrupt. He also mentioned secondary will be more aggressive which lends towards CB not sitting 10yrds back every play.
- The catchphrase “tough” has been the key mantra and Campbell has said in no fewer words ‘Miami ran too much.’ Part of this pass obsession (most in the league 74%), he said, was due to them perpetually being behind. Either way, the run game is going to be emphasized. This leads to another problem: personnel.
- Campbell said there could be jobs lost this week. Dallas and Douglas are rated 78th and 79th out of 79 guards according to Pro Football Focus. Jamil Douglas has allowed 16 quarterback hurries (most in the league) and Dallas Thomas has permitted 13 (second-most). Dallas has been playing next to Jason Fox and that could be a mitigating factor, but Douglas has no such excuse. Schematics also played a factor as Philbin believed guards must “block alone”. Several times I saw Dallas leaving the Tackles defender and sliding right only to have the defender rush into the vacated hole. As an example, Tannehill completed just 12 of 32 passes for 127 yards and two picks when blitzed on Sunday (a 34.2 rating). He was 7 for 12 for 71 yards and a 103.1 rating when he wasn’t blitzed.
- PFF graded Ryan Tannehill as the Dolphins’ worst player on offense and Kelvin Sheppard the worst player on defense on Sunday. I don’t see a move at QB; one point in support of this ( as well as Points 2&3) is this season Tannehill is being pressured on 43.7 percent of his dropbacks (the highest percentage in the league), up from 38.4 percent last season. To make things worse, when Tannehill can get the ball to a receiver, he is seeing it dropped more often. But MLB has no such excuse. In Coyle scheme MLB was needed to make tackles as the DL soaked up blocks – Sheppard didn’t make it happen. It is a near must that we see a change (if anyone on this roster can play better) and we could see a new MLB this week.
Coach Campbell has his work cut out for him and even the best pay per head reviews are saying the odds aren’t good. Schematic shifts, game preparation, and personnel changes needing to be made where no better substitute exists. IF coach Campbell and staff pull this one-off, then we Fins have found a real winner to lead our team!! Either way, we should see much more effort and that alone could lead to good things. What do all you Miami Fans think? GO FINS!!!!
