Can Isaac Asiata Rise To The Occassion?
Isaac Asiata has been called up from the Practice Squad… Can he surprise?
Isaac Asiata has been called up from the Practice Squad and will be active Sunday. This means Ted Larsen won’t be available. Jake Brendel, Wesley Johnson, and Asiata are the candidates to replace him. But which of the three will start in Larsen’s place is anyone’s guess.
Each of these three players carries a different drawback should they start. Brendel is the best option, but he’s likely to have some rust since he’s been in Injured Reserve since Preseason. Wesley has experience but he has the lowest ceiling and is light in the pants. Asiata offers the most potential and power… and the most downside.
Unless things have changed since the Preseason, I expect Brendel or Wesley to start. While both will have trouble with the power of Kenny Clark, they likely will offer the most consistent pass protection. Asiata was still showing poor hand-fighting technique in Preseason and whiffed too much to be trusted. But things may have changed since then. When his strength works, Asiata does well… but good technique often beats power
After all the bad luck of 2018, the Dolphins deserve a feel-good story
Also, who starts will depend on the gameplan.
Does Adam Gase intend for a heavy day of running the ball? Will it be Gore and Drake ‘all day’?
Jesse Davis has struggled a bit over the last few weeks, but his pass protection is good enough that Center Travis Swanson could divert much of his help towards Asiata’s side. While being rough in pass protection, Asiata displayed good power and drive blocking ability in Preseason. The recipe against the Packers could be 30+ carries with plenty of Gore between the tackles. In this case, Asiata would be the best option.
Asiata has plenty of power… if he could just add technique
Asiata had many fans excited when he was drafted with the Dolphins 5th pick in 2017. But his rookie season came and went without a start. It was expected that he’d find a spot on the roster in 2018… even if it was as a backup. Instead, Asiata was cut and stashed away on the practice squad.
Now due to a ton of injuries, Isaac Asiata has a chance for redemption when his fans and team need him the most.
Sounds nice. Likely better suited for a fairy tale… but stranger things have happened. At the very least it will be an interesting storyline and something to hope for. Go Phins!!!

Usually, a teams needs for the draft are obvious. However, with the Dolphins, any position where the top guy is available would be a good pick.
We still need a QB unless Falk develops. But I wouldn’t hold my breath. The QB spot is Mucho Problema for Dolphins
” The QB spot is Mucho Problema for Dolphins”
I agree 10000%. Was thinking the same thing throughout the game. Tannehill, Brock, or Fales isn’t the solution. Falk, could be, maybe… but this league is more than ever about the QB position. We will repeat this type of season over and over until we find a QB who is at least above avg in talent and good under pressure. We have seen a terrible string off injuries over the last three seasons, but even still we have struggled to put up points and on the opening drive.
My belief is this current issue stems from the decision to retool rather than rebuild in 2016. Dolphins need to pull a Raiders.
