Can Miami Win With A Poor Offensive Line?
There is no mystery that the Dolphins biggest weakness is their offensive line and two Guard positions: this is going to be a year long struggle. And if Branden Albert is not healthy to play in 16 games, this is going to be an even bigger problem. Let’s assume that the Dolphins do not sign Mathis, which seems less of a possibility, because the two sides are no where close in terms of money. So assuming that the Dolphins are going to start the season with the players they have on the current roster, the million dollar question is can Miami win with a below average offensive line?
My short answer is, Yes! They can win games – and if I were a sports gambler, I’d wager they can even win enough games to get into the playoffs, but they will not be able to win any type of championships. I know that the Offensive line is the heart of the entire offense, and if the offensive line is not pulling their weight, then the running and passing game are going to suffer. However, the Dolphins have enough talent at the skill positions on offense to still be effective.
Tannehill has spent much of his 3 years in the league playing behind a porous offensive line, which has often caused him to run for his life. He is the most sacked QB of any QB in the league over the last 3 years, so we know he can handle the pressure. It is not optimal, but Tannehill can still be productive if his line does not do a great job protecting him.
Another thing that can mask the offensive line deficiency is the structure of Bill Lazor’s offense. Lazor has a very fast hitting, up-tempo style offense that focuses on getting the ball out of the QB’s hand very quickly. That was evident last year, when Tannehill showcased his quicker release. This in it self will help prevent some sacks and put a little less pressure on the offensive line, because they will not have to hold their blocks for a long amount of time.
Lastly, the Dolphins defense has the talent and ability to be a top 5 defense in the league. Of the top 5 defenses in the league based on points allowed per game, all of those teams had a winning record. Only the Chiefs and the Bills did not make the playoffs, however both of those teams had below average offenses based on points scored per game. The Dolphins defense has the chance to be special this year and has the ability to take the rest of the team on their back and win games. Does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans think that the Dolphins can win with a below average offensive line?
