Charles Harris 2019 Preseason: Make or Break?

Bottom Line: Charles Harris needs to produce in 2019

The Miami Dolphins 2017 1st Round pick Defensive End Charles Harris is entering his third season in the NFL. And because he has shown so little, this preseason could make or break his Phins career.

Which will it be? Make or break? At the moment, ‘break’ seems more likely than ‘make’…

… But there is still time for Charles Harris to get his career on track.

Since he was Miami’s top pick in 2017, expectations have been high. Unfortunately, even average play would be a big step forward. So far his career has only produced 3 total sacks. And now with a new regime and Wake, Quinn, and Branch off of the team, there’s no one left for Harris to hide behind. It’s time for the training wheels to come off. Either Harris can put on the big boy pants or not

Charle Harris, for better or worse, is front and center and under the microscope.

Brian Flores is giving Harris every opportunity to earn the starting spot at Defensive End. But, if Harris doesn’t pick up his game fast, bookmaker software providers like www.AcePerHead.com bet Harris could lose that starting spot… and maybe even more.

In the first preseason game, Harris had 38 snaps, which shows this coaching staff truly wants to see what he can do. This is the feel-good part.

The cold reality is Harris didn’t play very well in the preseason opener. He graded out a poor PFF grade 54.7 with only one tackle. For a player who is desperate to validate his lofty draft status (or even a roster spot), this isn’t the type of start Harris needs… and Flores is looking for.

To make matters worse and more complicated, other Defensive Ends showed more bite in the first preseason game.

Dwayne Hendrix who played 27 snaps on Thursday and Jonathan Ledbetter who played 30 snaps had far more impact than Harris. Sure, Harris was going up against better competition compared to Hendrix and Ledbetter. But the fact is they made the most of the opportunities they were given. Harris, on the other hand, didn’t.

Hendrix provided 2 sacks but was a bit shaky in the run game. Ledbetter provided a sack as well, had a few hurries, and was a solid force in the running game. Ledbetter had the third-highest grade of Miami’s defensive players with an 89.9 behind only veterans Akeem Spence and Xavien Howard.

Defensive End Ledbetter is making waves every chance he gets

Ledbetter is definitely an intriguing prospect and was a force for Georgia last year and ranked 4th best among FBS interior Defensive players in stopping the run. This is the type of player Flores loves and is perfect for this scheme.

To add even more competition, there’s DE Jonathan Woodard who is liked by the staff and DE / LB Nat Orchard who flashed with his pop off the ball.

Flores will likely give Hendrix and Ledbetter more playing time with the starting unit over the next 2 preseason games to see if they can produce against better competition. If Harris continues to be a none factor, and Ledbetter or Hendrix perform against 1st stringers, maybe it’s time for Miami to move Harris out of the starting lineup. Or, sad but wise, if they can get any value for him in a trade, move on from him entirely.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans thoughts about Harris?

Certainly Coach Flores will give Harris every opportunity to make the team.

Hendrix and Ledbetter are earning more playing time who knows Parker may Stay healthy this season?

Kenny Stills is a keeper. Like Coach Flores stated to Kenny Stills he should have called for a meeting with Stephen Ross before going public.

Stills said he tried to meet but it did not happen? And that he was getting death threat’s after his recent comments.

My take on this issue is GOD is no respecter of person. Miami city is 70% Hispanic and over 80% of the Dolphins organization are people of color.

So just what messaged is The Owner sending to this city his staff and players? A fan would like to know?

My take on it Steve is Ross supported Stills and allowed him to kneel even though he supported Trump. This was when Trump was denouncing kneeling. Took guts by Ross and tolerance. Ross supported Stills and soon as Stills disagreed with Ross he proved disloyal… and called him a racist. My wife is Afro Carribean / Latin and a legal immigrant and as big a Trump supporter as you’ll find. She a racist? Now I have friends who are NYC cops some hurt in the line of duty. I know people who lost family in 9/11 as a cop. Kapernick wore “pig” socks and that will always be attached to kneeling. I never once blasted Stills for hating cops… would Stills call my wife a racist? Maybe an Uncle Tom? Stills annoys me. (Actually anyone of needs to publically serve others the way he does always leaves a bad taste in my mouth). Not for the kneeling, but because he is disloyal and appears a nice guy but really he labels people one of the worst tags at the drop of a hat, and he is anything but liberal… he is appearing a neoliberal….aka fascist. My way or you’re a racist. Funny, all these people who call Trump racist supported the Clintons who are documented racists. The kneeling wasn’t my taste, but whatever. This though is the dividing line. Stills revealed who he really is…

        Admin:

Race is very touching to all. Back in the day I have argued with black and white guys about race issues.

I don’t know stills or Kapernick no more than the man on the Moon and I don’t disliked Ross either.
But I do know we don’t need media telling us what is Wrong and Right. This is something we should have learned before leaving home. It’s terrible when we cannot just listened with the intent too solved issues. Any fool knows politics and religion are two subject most rarely agreed on.

          Rarely…. rarely…
“we don’t need media telling us what is Wrong and Right”. YUP… they have papers to sell, so they make money on drama.

Charles Harris, Devante Parker and of course, big mouth Stills need to be cut or traded now, before they are hurt or everyone figures out they can’t play.

Was going to write an article on Stills… so tired of articles saying he is such a hero. I don’t like the kneeling, but Ross said it was okay. But now that Stills turned on Ross when Ross was loyal to him despite not fully agree with Stills 100%?! I don’t like the guy… at all. Agree with me 100% or your a racist approach is the worst. I really hope they dump him on another team. Hope Williams shines bright so they can ditch him or Parker.

Many NFL players are way too shifty after have already received their huge undeserving pay-out contract-wise. Extremely poor management tactics when it comes to structuring player salary contracts. I say start placing stipulated performance conditioned clauses in each contract that holds players accountable to what they do or do not contribute on the playing field or off of it. It’s very irresponsible to pay huge amounts of money out to a player based off of his past performance statistics. Let him prove himself on the field of his new team then talk negotiations. NFL players today for the most part (especially the ones that think they are the team) get an infectious attitude that shows just how immature and selfish they are when it comes to expressing their opinions due to their lavish gifted salaries and undeserving endorsements. They are spoiled children with a bottomless income and really need to be disciplined on many levels. I look forward to the day when sporting industries are not so revered and player worship ceases. Antonio Brown is an excellent example of this.

“Many NFL players are way too shifty after have already received their huge undeserving pay-out contract-wise.” There are a ton of examples. The hunger to get the contract is often the main reason they play… which is fine if you have the character to justify the money. It must be far worse in Baseball though with the guaranteed money. Don’t follow the sport anymore. Unfortunately Ace, selfishness is now a primary personality trait in this society. Hopefully, Flores can lift the character of this team… with a few cuts.

A wasted first round pick as there were much better options during that draft year. I was hoping TJ Watt would be the first round pick instead of Charles Harris, but this is what you get when you don’t have enough smart people selecting players in a draft. I think he is just not smart, talented, or willing enough to put in the efforts in justifying him as a starter or even being on an NFL team. I say let’s try to get some trade value out of him or just cut him entirely. This is why when you deal with drafted players you structure their contract to reflect advantages that work for the franchise not against it. College success does not necessarily translate into the NFL and should be strongly considered when a play gets his contract offer. NFL players today get way too much leverage and it’s high time they were treated as any other employee would be if offered a job.

Sorry about the late first-time poster delayed approval… storms knocked out my electric 2 of the last three days. When you post again it will pot directly. Watt over Harris… yikes. Both Jimmy and I like Watt… Harris wasn’t on either of our radar. He could figure it out, but it’s looking less likely. He was very raw even in college. I do think he is giving his all… he just doesn’t have one outstanding asset. His spin move was his claim to fame and it hasn’t been seen much if at all. I don’t think they’ll cut him… until next year, Ace.
