Colin Cowherd: ‘The Pats & Lions Trade Intrigue’

Cowherd says ‘Intrigue is brewing over a trade between Patriots & Lions’

Colin Cowherd put forth the theory yesterday about how the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions were brewing a trade between them for the 3rd Overall pick. The reason for this trade is so the Patriots can draft quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Theories are nice, but they are a dime a dozen. So, I mostly consider this take by Cowherd with a grain of salt.

This theory does have some credence as it stems from a report by Ian Rappaport (who used to work with the Boston Herald and contacts with the Pats) that the Patriots plan to use ‘a premium pick’ in this draft on a quarterback. Also, Rappaport said this quarterback they were gunning for was Tua Tagovailoa. Because the Pats don’t have a 2nd Round Pick, this means–if this report is true–that the premium pick they intend to use is their 1st Round Pick.

BUT…

… this report wasn’t meant to reveal the Patriots’ true intentions with Tua because this has high-grade disinformation. Rappaport was given the info, but the real question is why?

I don’t think Rappaport would create this from whole clothe because he doesn’t need relevance. And do any of us think that Bill Belichick would allow this info out and compromise his agenda? Also, can we believe that anyone working for Belichick would leak critical info and risk their career?

Bill Belichick reveres ‘The Art of War’ and it is replete with the use of disinformation:

“Thus the expert in battle moves the enemy and is not moved by him.”

The Phins have a ton of picks which is a huge advantage over the Patriots… unless Miami expends them en masse on a single player. It is well known that Miami has had a longstanding interest in Tua, so he could be a blind spot for them. This report offers the potential of creating a desperate action from the Phins… if Tua is really their guy.

Also, Brian Flores is a former Patriot with a unique insight into the Patriots organization who crippled Belichick’s Super Bowl run last year. All these picks, with Flores, and the loss of Brady make Miami a dangerous opponent for the Patriots.

If Belichick can ‘leak’ info to push Grier into moving up unnecessarily and expend valuable picks, this creates an advantage for the Patriots.

This would be devious and brilliant… and very Belichickian.

You might say that’s a little much. Maybe?

But what’s the most likely scenario: Rappaport lied, the Patriots have a rat, Belichick wants the world to know what his plans are… or this is disinformation in an attempt to wound a division rival?

Time will tell what is what. And as I said at the beginning, “Theories are nice, but they are a dime a dozen.” So take my take with a grain of salt…

… Still, the report is out there. The question is why?

Whatever it is, I just hope Chris Grier holds his water and doesn’t trade up. Go Phins!!!
