Colts V.S. Dolphins: A Cautionary Tale

nfl_g_lucktannehillsplit_gb1_576

Colts are coming  in to Sun Life Stadium down Luck who is still being ruled out for kidney / Abdominal issues. Neither team has lived up to expectations and both are looking at regime changes. This weeks game is about pride, showing off your wares for future jobs and the cautionary tale of building a franchise on the shoulders of a single position.

Dolphins are quite possibly down another linemen in Pouncy and another Linebacker in Jenkins who are both listed as questionable with ankle injuries. So, Sunday two of the three thinnest positions are likely to be even thinner. But, even with the injuries the Colts are a hot mess in their own right and are ranked down in the bottom of the league of most major stats except passing where they are ranked #19.

The Colts went into the playoffs this year, but even when their “All World” QB  was healthy they were an inconsistent team that didn’t live up to expectations. Much like the Dolphins bad coaching and large holes in the roster proved too much to overcome. The Dolphins in their own right rested the season on their QB, loading up on WR’s and carrying high expectations with marquee signings. But, both are now victim of their folly. Issues on the O-line, lack of fundamental depth, and poor coaching decisions led to their season’s demise. Colts though have proven that even if T-Hill were to play at a high level, it isn’t the end all be all, because football is a team game and a QB driven team is one hit away from crumbling.

Yes, it’s nice to have a QB like Brady – real nice, but it’s even nicer when Brady can go down and you can still bring in the back-up and churn out an 11-5 record. Really, that’s the moral of the story – teams win games and teams can absorb injuries and survive the long haul. The system and the core of the team are the essence of football. Yes, it is a QB driven league and it pays huge dividends having a marquee player and it doesn’t take the best sportsbooks in the world to figure it is better to have one than not, but a quality team is not made on one player not matter how great. We had Dan Marino to prove the reality of one man practically carrying a team and the unsatisfying results of it.

While T-Hill’s cap value necessitates he play at a high level, it takes a team to protect a QB and a team to win games, divisions, and championships. This off season let’s hope this next regime gets the big picture. Go Fins!!
