Conklin: Longshot Pick Could Payoff Big

Conklin: Longshot Pick Could Payoff Big

Tackle Jack Conklin could fill two holes with one pick.

Conklin is a longshot pick in most mocks, but he is a player who could payoff big.

Miami’s Adam Gase has promised that they will draft a day 1 starter in the first round. Maybe, tackle Jack Conklin is a longshot pick that could payoff big?!

Miami has actually done well the last 5 years drafting starters in the first round in Mike Pouncey, Ryan Tannehill, Ja’Wuan James, and DeVante Parker. Besides Jordan, it’s fair to say Miami has been successful in selecting a starter that has been able to step in and produce in their Rookie season. The Dolphins still have many holes left on their team, so most sports gambling fans are betting that they will be able to find another starter in Round 1.

I was a big fan of signing Kelechi Osemele, maybe overly big. But, his versatility in being able to man all tackle and guard spots was quite a draw. Yeah, he received way more than Miami could or should afford – so I sucked it up with a box of kleenex.

So while Conklin isn’t as massive, and might be a better LG and RT, he “seemingly” has most of the same qualities.

Michigan State Offensive Tackle Jack Conklin is a big boy at 6’5”, 308 pounds and was a very good Left Tackle for the Spartans. He is projected to be a first round pick, and will almost definitely be there when the Dolphins are on the clock at number 13. But, if the Dolphins might even be able to gamble, trade back, and still probably be able to select him in the late teens or even early twenties.

Conklin could be a major band-aid if the Dolphins line, once again, suffers injury.

Conklin did a fine job of protecting Connor Cook’s blind side as well as a very good job of opening holes in the running game. In addition, Conklin played in the ultra competitive Big 10 conference, which proves he is battle tested. Most scouts are saying that Conklin is more fit for the right side in the NFL as a tackle because they feel he’s not athletic enough to handle NFL speed rushers.

Conklin would offer Miami more talent on the line, flexibility in case of injury, and an upgrade of youth and talent at guard. James had to man the LT spot his rookie season and he performed fairly well. If Albert were to go down (again), James could slide over and Conklin could play RT. If everything moves smoothly, he could play LG. In Miami’s zone stretch Conklin’s would have more than enough athletics to play LG. I know defense is a priority and CB/ DB/ LB harder to acquire than offensive linemen (other than Left Tackle), but I think this option does present many positives, especially if combined with a trade back. So if the Dolphins went this direction, I could see myself not destroying another T.V. Go Fins!!!

Admin, I did not even know about the trade. That does change everything. We now know that Wentz will go #1, does Cleveland take Goff at 2? All the suddenly QB Lynch becomes much more valuable, and should he be there at 13, the pick’s value could also increase. To me all good news for Miami. The board has now officially been shaken up and we are 2 weeks out.

I agree 100% Steve. We can not and should not miss a Blue Chip player just to add a third round pick. Should the possibility be there to add a second round pick, that would be a different story. Should Elliott, Hargraves slide down to 13 take ’em. If not, maybe a trade back w Atlanta (garnish a 3rd round pick) could be the case, but you would lose the option of taking Darron Lee, because that would be the reason that Atlanta would make the trade in the first place. SB Nation has Miami taking Apple at 13 then Jaylon Smith at 42. I would be down w that for sure. I see them taking a TE at some point i this draft, do we need one now, no! However; the cupboard will be extremely bare next year. That would leave 5 picks to address the DE, OL, RB, DL positions should the SB scenario along w a TE happen.

Best case for Miami is if the QBs slide or a player such as Bosa or Elliott slide to 13. That would maximize the pick’s value. Then again, do you pass on a player such as Elliott to accumulate more picks? As hard as it would be, if we could garnish a 2nd and a 3rd = yes, if not = no, take the player.

Seems after that insane trade by the Rams neither of the top 2 QB’s will slide. I think it all depends on where you are falling back to…a 3rd for a few slots (depending on how the boards lays out and you have a few players that are top players on Miami’s board), then a 3rd is fine. Also, I think Miami’s board is wider than what we see…I think it was you Dunner who got my wheels turning on a DE. There are a bunch of variables, obviously, but yeah more can be less as less can be more. Hope we have a very good shopper for our new cook.

Its been said that Conklin and Decker are day one starters. A 2nd rounder Possibly Springs A former tight end, Springs was a four-year starter at left tackle for the Hoosiers and showed steady development each season, filling out his frame and holding his own against the Big Ten’s top rushers like Joey Bosa and Shilique Calhoun.? A second Rounder Coleman would need to clear the Doctors but has played the left side. Beavers would be a 4th rounder with starting potential, Alex Lewis played OT with Nebraska earned Team Captain role a 7th rounder and OT Lumpkin are all in my view starters with impact on our offensive line? Is it a requirement to draft a guard? Why can’t we draft OT with Versatility to play both position?

Yes! trading back would give more picks But That Blue Chip player is a no Brainer! We must draft? Remember Fin Fans the PAT’s won 10 straight games before injuries failed them with no dept. in quality players? We Dolphins only won 1 game out of 3? Then 3 more games later in the season. We have a Deep hole to climbed out of? Don’t be deceived? We cannot entertain mediocre players?

I think he could end up a blue chipper at LG and maybe RT. Do you remember how James did when he filled in for Albert? I remember him doing pretty good for a rookie. In the end at 13 I wouldn’t like it, but later in the round I could see it. I doubt they go line at all in first or second to tell you the truth.

I hear you! Pick 13th leaves Miami with many Scenario’s. I envisioned Miami drafting two Offensive Linemen I’m not certain which round? I believed any of the top 6 linemen would start for us?

…13 is imnsho, way too high for Conklin …somewhere in the 20s with an extra 2nd thrown in, then hell yes

…if Stanley isn’t there at 13, and a decent trade down offer is made into the 20s, then either Conklin or Whitehair would make good choices …Gase can keep both in the weight room all summer long

…if we don’t get a decent trade down offer and Stanley isn’t there at 13, then I’d be ok with bpa …but only if the next 3 picks are OL

…if a top 3 QB drops to us, I think we can get at least an xtra 2nd and still get a starting guard in the 1st …lot of teams below us hungry for QBs

…so far, I like the way this draft is shaping up for us …the #8-13 trade for 2 starters (if they start) means we could get 3 starters out of it that all fill positions of need …that would be a coup.

Yeah, 3 starters would be tremendous, especially considering near 50% of the roster’s contracts are up next year. I tell you Lemmus, if this regime ends up competent. I won’t know what to do. It’s been so long since competence top to bottom has run this organization. But, I ready to try it out again, that’s for sure. 2weeks till we find out if we have a stud or dud as an FO!!
