Conklin is a longshot pick in most mocks, but he is a player who could payoff big.
Miami’s Adam Gase has promised that they will draft a day 1 starter in the first round. Maybe, tackle Jack Conklin is a longshot pick that could payoff big?!
Miami has actually done well the last 5 years drafting starters in the first round in Mike Pouncey, Ryan Tannehill, Ja’Wuan James, and DeVante Parker. Besides Jordan, it’s fair to say Miami has been successful in selecting a starter that has been able to step in and produce in their Rookie season. The Dolphins still have many holes left on their team, so most sports gambling fans are betting that they will be able to find another starter in Round 1.
I was a big fan of signing Kelechi Osemele, maybe overly big. But, his versatility in being able to man all tackle and guard spots was quite a draw. Yeah, he received way more than Miami could or should afford – so I sucked it up with a box of kleenex.
So while Conklin isn’t as massive, and might be a better LG and RT, he “seemingly” has most of the same qualities.
Michigan State Offensive Tackle Jack Conklin is a big boy at 6’5”, 308 pounds and was a very good Left Tackle for the Spartans. He is projected to be a first round pick, and will almost definitely be there when the Dolphins are on the clock at number 13. But, if the Dolphins might even be able to gamble, trade back, and still probably be able to select him in the late teens or even early twenties.
Conklin could be a major band-aid if the Dolphins line, once again, suffers injury.
Conklin did a fine job of protecting Connor Cook’s blind side as well as a very good job of opening holes in the running game. In addition, Conklin played in the ultra competitive Big 10 conference, which proves he is battle tested. Most scouts are saying that Conklin is more fit for the right side in the NFL as a tackle because they feel he’s not athletic enough to handle NFL speed rushers.
Conklin would offer Miami more talent on the line, flexibility in case of injury, and an upgrade of youth and talent at guard. James had to man the LT spot his rookie season and he performed fairly well. If Albert were to go down (again), James could slide over and Conklin could play RT. If everything moves smoothly, he could play LG. In Miami’s zone stretch Conklin’s would have more than enough athletics to play LG. I know defense is a priority and CB/ DB/ LB harder to acquire than offensive linemen (other than Left Tackle), but I think this option does present many positives, especially if combined with a trade back. So if the Dolphins went this direction, I could see myself not destroying another T.V. Go Fins!!!
