Davon Godchaux has all the tools to be an excellent anchor at Nose Tackle
Davon Godchaux has been prepared by HC Brian Flores and DC Patrick Graham this offseason to fill the role of the 2019 Miami Dolphins Nose Tackle.
Not too much of a surprise. Actually, back in January when Phinsnews anticipated a 34 Defense of some sort coming, we saw this as a possibility: “When Miami moves to a 3-4, Godchaux will play a D-End, or less likely the ‘nose’.”
Yeah, a little self-congratulatory… but not much.
To be truthful, I’m still stuck in the old school football mindset. I saw Godchaux as a Wade Phillips style penetrating Nose. It’s time to ‘get my mind right’: The days of the mammoth NTs are near extinct.
If I had been more forward thinking, it would have been clear that the position of read / react Nose Tackle had Godchaux’s name written all over it. A clear indicator is Godchaux’s limited pass rush arsenal. Vincent, and then after the draft, Wilkins, are much better generators of QB pressure. Given this, there’s no way Godchaux plays the wings consistently. Oh well, you live and learn.
Godchaux has all the tools be a good 2 Down (sometimes 3 Down) Nose
Despite getting put inside to do the dirty work, Godchaux has shown the perfect attitude about his new role. “The ultimate goal is to be a team player (at) my nose position. If I’m in 1-tech, play A-gap, 2-I, play the A-gap, if I move to a three-play B-gap. It’s the same thing we’re doing. We’re playing the same gap. We just went from attacking to read.”
Team first… nice. Ahem, now isn’t Mr. Jones?!
In fact, Godchaux played as a read / react Tackle in his first season. Last year Miami hired Lions coach Kris Kocurek who favored a penetrating style for his D-line. So, Godchaux isn’t entering unknown waters. This is just a refresher course.
Godchaux was solid his first season with a PFF Grade of 52.6. But in his sophomore season, he grew tremendously with a PFF Grade of 74.3 overall and a Grade of 85.4 in run defense. The shift from read to upfield pressure wasn’t the difference maker, it was Godchaux’s growth in the ability to root himself down and slow his wash down the line on double teams.
The tape shows Godchaux as a player of size, agility, and power… that has grown into an anchor inside.
Godchaux flanked by Wilkens and Taylor will be a stout interior. You can bet with a per head sportsbook like Ace Pay Per Head on that for sure. Add to these starters a supporting cast of Tank Carradine, Jonathan Woodard, and Jamiyus Pittman who are solid in run defense and opposing offenses will find it much harder to get traction on Miami in 2019.
As we said just before the draft, Miami’s Run Defensive will be a strength for the franchise once again. Miami’s quality Run Defense will put opposing QBs in less manageable 3rd Down situations… and that will go a long way towards fixing the pass rush. Maybe a respectable defense isn’t as far off as is expected?! Go Phins!!!
