What Happened To Dion Sims
Dion Sims flashed in 2014, but a concussion in 2015 led to a step back in production.
The Dolphins drafted Tight End Dion Sims in the 4th round in 2013. And despite limited playing time in his rookie year, he was expected to be a big part of Miami’s offensive game plan in the years to come.
In 2014, Sims saw an increase in playing time and flashed some talent on his 24 catches, 284 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sims appeared to be in position to make a big leap last season, however, his numbers went down in 2015 (18 receptions, 127 yards and 1 touchdown).
2016 has Sims at the crossroads of his career in Miami.
Some analysts explain Sims’ lack of production as by-product of being the Dolphins best blocking Tight End the last two years. The result of his blocking skill success was that his pass catching opportunities were limited. Considering that the Dolphins have been a mess on the offensive line for quite awhile and needed as much help as they can get, it makes sense that Sims was utilized more for blocking then for pass catching.
Could this year be a bounce back year?
Dion Sims is yet another player who could be “coached up” by Gase to meet his potential.
For starters, the Miami Dolphins have added some more talent to their offensive line unit, so at least on paper, many sports gambling fans believe that the Dolphins offensive line will be improved from years past. If this becomes a reality, then it would give the Dolphins more flexibility to have Sims running routes instead of spending the majority of his snaps blocking. Also, new Head Coach Adam Gase loves to utilize his TE’s in the passing game, which means both Jordan Cameron and Dion Sims should see more balls thrown their way. However, the question will be, can Sims actually make the most of them and be productive?
In his limited amount of action, Sims has appeared to have very soft hands, and at times he has shown the ability to find seams in the defense. Now that Sims is entering his fourth season in the league, this year should be looked at as a make or break year for him. The bubble wrap should be completely removed, and he should be given more opportunities to show if he can be productive in the passing game. In this new NFL that is a passing league, the Tight End position is essential to the passing game, and the best offenses always getting their Tight Ends involved. It seems that Gase understands this, so Sims should get more opportunities to show he can be more than a blocker. Go Fins!!!
