The Miami Dolphins pulled off two trades yesterday before the NFL trade deadline…. and minus the draft picks we had to give up, it sure does feel like we did get better as a team! The Phins traded for stud pass rusher Bradley Chubb from the Broncos and Denver’s 2025 fifth round pick, for their 2023 1st round pick from the 49ers, a 2024 fourth round pick and running back Chase Edmonds. Then Miami quickly replaced Edmonds by trading for the 49ers running back Jeff Wilson by giving up their 2023 fifth round pick. This deal reunites Wilson with Coach McDaniel and Mostert who were all together in San Francisco last year.
Sounds pretty darn good to me!

All-in-all, Miami basically turned the 49ers 3 first round picks into Waddle, Hill, and Chubb, along with trading away some other draft picks-not too shabby. Most pay per head services would say Miami did a a heck of a job of turning those picks into pro bowl type players. Chubb is in a contract year and looking to get paid, so Miami is going to sign him long term. No other road makes sense because you don’t give up a first round pick for a player that is going to play half a season.
Chubb is in the midst of one of his best seasons of his career right now with 5.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. For a Phins team that only has 15 sacks this is a huge boost to our pass rush. The Dolphins have pressured opposing QB’s on only 22% of their drop backs this season, which is the 4th lowest rate in the NFL. Clearly, Miami needed to add a lot more juice to their pass rush. Chubb will help that as long as he can stay healthy. Unfortunately, Chubb has missed 24 games out of 73 games, which is a bit concerning.
Dolphins moved Edmonds, but added Wilson
On the other trade, Miami on paper improved their running back room by adding Wilson, who has 468 rushing yards this season and 2 touchdowns. Edmonds was clearly struggling in Miami with only 120 rushing yards this season and multiple dropped passes, so this could be a sneaky improvement in our running game. One downside, Wilson though is that he does have 2 fumbles and both lost on the season.
Miami is definitely going all, ALL in this season because now they no longer have any first round draft picks next year in a draft that’s considered to have a lot more talent than last year’s draft. The sense behind this is that Tua is still on a rookie contract. Barring injuries, Tua has proven this season he can be a franchise QB and it’s key to make hay when Tua is had on the cheap.
